  • @IlReCremisi I don't see the point in these comparisons, Dream Theater and Tool play entirely different music, with entirely different values. I also wouldn't judge the artistic (or other) abilities of either only based on their work in a single band. I don't doubt that all the musicians are highly versatile, and that simply because Dream Theater has no interest in creating music like Tool doesn't mean they aren't capable. And it all comes down to opinion in the end anyway.

  • @Joziaac i love both bands, but it was a reply to some narrow minded dude who said Tool's weren't skilled enough to play with DT... That was totally pointless. In my opinion Maynard is one of the most interesting singer in the whole genre, while i don't like Labrie at all, and Danny Carey is simply one of the greatest drummer ever... like John petrucci e Jordan Rudess are two of the best....

  • @IlReCremisi well thats just narrow minded, although completely subjective I guess. I adore both bands, lateralus is a phenomenal album. But theres not a single DT album (cept for EDADU) tht I dont like just as much. Both bands are out of this world in terms of creativity and ability. Really hoping tool will release a new album soon, DT's next is out soon, and should be just as mindblowing as their others hopefully!

  • I want this in a CD!!!!!!!!! This is amazing. I have never fely so raw and exposed to the essence of the music than ever before. I honestly have been touched at a primal level listining to this, and when it was cut short, it was like being riped back from somewhere we came from, but have long sence forgoten. 10 out of 10

  • @2286aaron it is...just check out jordan rudess' solo shit and dream theater and liquid tension experiment, and look up "canturbury scene" you'll eat that shit up! my personal favs are Egg, Soft machine and Gilgamesh.

    But I count bars of 4/4, 5/4, 6/4 and 11/8... so it's a bit more complicated.

    I think it's mostly in 11/8, hence the namel; "Hang 11"... it might be a nod to "Take Five".

    Starting at 1:28, it's DEFINITELY 11/4, counted 1-2-3-4-5 1-2-3-4-5-6. I think most of the piece is that.

    Nah man, 5/8 and 6/8, you can count it as, but it's definitely 11/4 -which explains the name. Count, from the first piano roll 1 2 3 4 5 1 2 3 4 5 6. It's a weird rhythmn... basically 5/4 with with another 1/8 added on - but don't count it as 5.5/4 per bar lol.

    Nah, trust me, it's in 11/4. The name "Hang Eleven" is a pun on "Take Five", the classic Brubeck track. Count it "1-2-3-4-5 1-2-3-4-5-6".

  • I disagree on the cliche part. Back in the late 80's and early 90's there weren't really any bands that sounded like DT, except maybe Queensrÿche, but they were more or less parallell in timing. In my opinion Dream Theater created the prog metal genre, and my guess is that you've started out listening to some of the new stuff whose style and composition is highly inspired by DT..

  • no no no, its not a rip off, if you listen carefully it is based loosely on take five but its called hang ELEVEN for a reason. its in eleven/four ts. and it is a bit more minor in key, instead of blues scale (they inserted a natural second in the scale, as well as a minor sixthy in lou of the sharp fourth.) i still love both songs like crazy, i wouldnt really call it a rip off

  • sounds like 14/8, or alternating 6/8 and 8/8, counting johns eighth notes in the bar its 3,3,3,5 so 14/8 but that would be really odd. you cant really simplify it as 7/4 becuase of the swaying feel. not sure what it actually is, or how to label the meter. think its most likely 6/8 8/8 alternating.

  • hmm, good point on johns eights, i was only listening to the piano but that reinforces the point more, but i can't agree that i hear it as 14/8. i hear as an alternating 5/8 6/8, especially in the piano line. as for the swaying feel, in the 6/8, the accent would be on the upbeat of 1,2, and the downbeat of 5, then for the 6/8, accents on upbeats of 1,2 and downbeats of 5,6. during jordans solo john flips the rhythm to 6/8 5/8 alternations,jordan does this as well from time to time in johns solo

  • Nice job on recognizing the flips, i couldn't catch them as quickly. I didn't hear 14\8 either though. However i heard 10\8 and 12\8 a lot in the primary melody which is pretty much the same thing as your 5\8 6\8 switch, just doubled.

  • Jordan Rudess is definitely the best keyboardist Dream Theater has ever had, his creativity and speed is incomparable, but of course all three keyboardists played in a different style so obviously it will sound different when Jordan covers some of DT's older songs.

  • Woah, hang on a second. Rudess is a seriously sick player, probably the leader of rock keyboards today. But to say he makes some of Moore's material ten times better? Man, I have to say that even though he's my favourite player, I don't like what he does to 'Wait for sleep', 'Learning to live' or sometimes 'Take the time'. They were three of the best keyboard solos of all time; he doesn't need to embellish them as much as he does.

  • I really liked Derek. I personally thought he was more of a 'pianist', whereas the other two were 'keyboardists', if that makes sense.
