haha im 14 and 3 months ago i texted my friend a poem i wrote that went my heads on fire my minds in a blaze oh how i wish of better days days with no hatred days with no fear days when all i wonted was for you to be here but that was all a dream a hope a thought a wish i should have wonted more but now all i ask is this that u will let me go my spirit set free so that someday there will be more to see more that a face more than a desperate cry so i might become something before the day i die
Mr. Zihuatanejo!! You are freakin awesome. Im sorry I was such a pain in the ass in your class!! Everytime you spoke though, I listened.. I kept every project I did in your class. You are a remarkable person and thanks for being such a great teacher!-- Christian
also... "when i saw two wanna be thug vato locos... do what most civilized countries on this planet cannot do, unclench their fist and chose not to fight."
for the first portion of this poem, there is some definite Taylor Mali channeling going on. It's like plagiarism of thought. Just expressed in different words. My response: What? The hell...
OMG... he is awsome. If you didn't pick up on it, he was quoting from the Crucible "Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life!" keep it up!
@4Vox He's a great poet. I would have loved to have had to honor to be in his classroom. However, I was lucky enough to compete against him. I am a poet as well. Joaquin is far greater than I will ever be, but even though he was never my teacher, he has taught me so much.
I can't even tell you what this...how this affected me. There are no words. But the part that hit me the most is when he is talking about his only deaf student this year, john, who restores antique radios because he likes the way static feels in his palms.
I think what citizenwind was trying to say is that one hand isn't enough fingers to count the amount of times Joaquin tells the exact same story of another performance poet. Wanna list?
Steal? No, not even close. I'm sure there are hundreds, if not thousands, of teachers out there who feel the same way as Joaquin and Taylor Mali. I see two different messages in the poems that some capture the same meaning. You can't steal emotions, you can't fake that shit. I could read Joaquin's poem, go crazy with it, and yet I'll never share the same passion, the same level of energy as he did. So, shame to those who cite stealing. Many artists paint the sea.
" I make them press the pencils down so hard when they write, they make impressions on things they were not intending to impress" love that. great and original
@yoadrian127 I'm sure any teacher feels the same way. Why else would anyone willingly go into teaching knowing the kind of pay check they are gonna get? To help, inspire, and educate students to hope in the end that they get something out of class. And the day they do, makes the paycheck seem inadequate, because you know you've just made a difference in someone's life.
Or all teachers hate being underpaid and believe what they do is noble.
I've heard the same words come out of my teachers mouthes without the form of poetry.
None of what they actually say is the same though. Taylor's is a conversation with a lawyer, they don't seem at all similar to me. Just the same subject matter.
Taylor Mali is annoying anyway and his 'influences' have been questioned just as well.
this guy is good.
