Great performance by Teddy Thompson of a great Cohen song. I love to play the album 'I'm your man' in my car. This is one of my favorite songs on the album. Bravo also to the wonderful backing vocals!
I can't even find the words to describe what Teddy's vocie does to me sometimes, or Leonards songs for that matter. This is a fantastic song, and Teddy even makes it sexy somehow. A brave and stunning cover, well done Teddy!
A friend put this on a mix for me, though I wasn't a Cohen fan, had never heard this song or Teddy Thompson before -- and it became an instant favorite. It's almost 7 minutes but it keeps your attention for every second. Got to be one of the best covers ever done.
I think Teddy was brave to cover this song. The message may piss off the liberals, but I think the general public has been begging for a song like this for too long...
"The message" of the song is hardly as clear as you seem to wish. There are complex layers of ambiguity and irony in it, and if you're trying to pin it to one political agenda, you've got your work cut out for you. As far as I can tell from his songs and what little I know about the man, he's hardly a conservative, except maybe on abortion (which *is* referenced here).
Even if you're right, maybe we liberals can appreciate compelling art even if we don't agree 100% with its message.
It is unfortunate that as an American, I am forced to watch the rapid decline of our countries moral values knowing that there is nothing anyone can do to stop it. After all, we all have such wonderful freedoms here in the U.S.! It's just too bad that so many of us don't know how to think beyond our own fields of vision. I do blame the liberals as is my right. Unfortunately, like some liberals, you had to "twist and distort " to suit your own agenda.

And if "the general public has been begging" for doomy art songs about apocalyptic social breakdown (an odd assertion), they clearly need to pay more attention, since this one was originally released 16 or 17 years ago and I don't think it's ever made it onto the Billboard charts.
I seem to have struck a raw nerve with my comment. I hope you will forgive me for not being more clear. I do know how old the song is. However, Mr.Thompson just does it better. I should have said , "the general public should be begging for a song like this" Too many people today (especially our youth) think that it's ok to say and do whatever they want without having to suffer any long-term consequences.

One of the best covers - ever! Leonard Cohen's words and music delivered by Teddy Thompson's voice...no need to repent about that choice.

Them be some pretty strong lyrics. ;o )
For some odd reason I like this song. The music is a kind of throw-back to the 60s and the lyrics are raw and uninhibited.
