Matt was legitimately strong too. I had a high school teacher who met Matt. He was driving in his car and saw a girl with a flat tire. He pulled over to help her change it, but she didn't have a jack. Then this big guy pulled over to help them out. It turned out to be Matt Mendenhall. He lifted the car up and held it for over 2 minutes while my teacher changed the tire. Then he drove off. My teacher was so impressed he became an instant fan of Matt's and told everybody he met the story.

Matt was born in late June 1960, so he'll be 48. As far as I know, this was his last contest. He dropped out of sight, got a legitimate (whatever that means) certification as a massage therapist and lives somewhere in Colorado. He's carefully avoided any interviews or anything. It's true -- he never won a national overall title, and USA in 1985 was as close as he came. Back then, only the overall winner of the USA could get a pro card. But Matt was something special, for sure!
