Lord in heaven when will the world catch up to this most major of talents? How could anyone not love this. And his new limited release is (some of) the best ever. "I Believe in the System of Madness"
Kid Creole and the coconuts, the time of Anthony Polite and me in the disco in Menden, anyone from Northumberland Barracks, 69 th regiment remember? Heidi
Holy moly, saw them at Plymouth Volksfest, great funky salsa, at true entertainer and wow, the coconuts, three smokin hot ladies, especialy the middle one, captivating!!
I did catch him last night and he was awesome, the crowd were so up for it, dancing in the aisles ona thursday night. Truly rocked it with a real party vibe
@beenbrun Last night was great - not the usual reserved uk sit-down-till-it's-too-late crowd. He's a true entertainer. I've never heard of anyone going to one of his shows and not coming out smiling.
That's funny you mention their appearance on SNL, because that's when I saw them first (Mister Softee!). I ran out and bought "Off the Coast of Me" the next day. I lived in NYC, their home base, so I saw them LOTS. First show was The Savoy in NYC in the 40's on the Fresh Fruit tour. Is that SNL season available on DVD?
Don't mean to be negative - I love KCC as much as anyone - but this pales in comparison to the 1985 clip from the Live in Paris show. In this '07 performance the choreography is watered down and it's just lackluster without Mundi, Addy, Cheryl and Janique. Check out the 1985 performance!!
Of course, nothing, and i mean NOTHING can compare to the original band. You mention the choreography and the comparison with The Leisure Tour 1985 is significant, but what about the band : no horns section will ever be above what Lee Robertson, Charles Lagond and Ken Fradley were able to give . If you check the "Take me" clip posted by Adriana, this jumps to your face !
That horn section is the funkiest, carribeanest, coolest, sambaest, mamboest thing you'll ever hear.
This being said, let's admit that the 2000s band still brings a fair amount of groove and excitment, especially for anyone who missed the chance (or was just too young) to see the band perform in the 1980s. If you check the "Take me" clip posted by Adriana, this jumps to your face !
(Sorry ,the "Take me" clip referred to the amazing horn section from the original band...D..ned Youtube and their 500 chars limit !)
Speaking of the new band, the girls are still sexy and move pretty well, and they manage to keep the "Stop bragging around Mister Wonderful Thing" spirit alive. Moreover, still today, I don't think that a lot of performances out there can compare to a concert intro or ending by Bongo Eddie : this is definitely the REAL THING !
I agree with ALL your comments!! We should talk! I have a good story or two to share regarding my history loving the band, which began with their appearance on SNL in November, 1980. It rocked my world.
Hi guys...great comments and it is great to here the passion that we all have for this band. They have played a huge part in our lives over the last 25 years. The 80's band can never be bettered and will never be forgotten but I have to tell you that standing there in front of the current band still makes the hairs stand up and puts a huge smile on the face...it is still fantastic entertainment. Thanks to August for still doing what he does otherwise we would have nothing.
You also have to applaud the professionalism here...this night at the St. Albans arena had a very sparse crowd (less than 200 I guess) yet they played like it were packed out. Imagine KC&TC doing a concert just for me...that's what it felt like. Yes, at times I missed Addy, the babes, Charlie, Ken, Lee, Coati, and Peter, not forgetting Miss Carol Colman, but once Bongo intros everyone and they get you singing, smiling and dancing, you appreciate so much what you have before you.
MSP62 - Have to agree with you. We saw Kid in the 80's (may even have been the same tour) and it was an amazing show. It was in a smaller, now-defunct Toronto venue, and as close as we'll ever come to experiencing a 50's style nighclub.
The Coconuts wore catsuits with the navels cut out - they could sing AND move!
Hi, so you're MAN IN THE BACK - the excellent funky drummer !! I can send you an MPEG which is better quality & has an extra 20 secs at the end if you would like it. Just send me an email.

@beenbrun Kid Creole was stunning in his purple suit. I particularly loved his conga-style exit :)

Wouldn't it be cool if they could play at Barrack Obama's inaugural ball. It would top Soul Asylum at Bill Clinton's.

You have a copy of that? That's bizarre because it was the worst season of SNL but it had some great musical stuff on it. Captain Beefheart for one!
