  • When we lived in Sasebo, my culture class teacher has us watch this movie, It was my first anime there... I can't ever forget it and I plan to watch it again and again, and hopefully, it will last until my kids can see it. Also, I remember searching for the candy in the movie , I just found a place that sells the normal kind, and the Grave of the Fireflies Limited Edition kind, I plan to get them both.

  • i shall watch this anime movie! as i watched barefoot gen!

  • @FeooTubee are you insane or what!?! Couldn't I take a guess!?!?

  • They both die in the end....

  • @stevenisthename You're such a cunt! No point in watching this now... Douche.

  • @FeooTubee technically you know they both die from the very beginning

  • Just finished watchin this movie and let me just say amazing, moving, saddest animation movie ive seen :'(

    I hate war

  • This looks incredibly good but I wouldn't be able to watch it because I hate the animation x.x

  • cried so many times D;

  • Guys quit fighting in the comments!!!

  • I'm scared to watch this :(

  • @VainWolves I was too :( I watched it just yesterday and I cried my eyes out. I didn't really know what to expect. Very powerful and heartbreaking :(

  • Fantastic movie, incredibly powerful.

  • just watch the damn trailer and stop arguing about ww2 it happened 70 years ago.

  • Also, just before the bombing of Hiroshima, Japan and the US were trying to make peace. FDR proposed a temporary peace treaty until things could be sorted out. the prime minister of Japan said "standby". but the prime minister's translator relayed the wrong message, saying instead that the response had been "silence" or "ignore" (the prime minister had used an older word that the translators on both the US and Japanese side interpreted incorrectly). And so FDR finally used the US's last resort.

  • just putting this out there: the Japanese made a deal with Germany; that they would have control of the Dutch East Indies. As the Japanese moved closer in proximity, the US became uncomfortable, and created an oil embargo. the Japanese saw this as an act of war, then Pearl Harbor happened, and I'm sure everyone knows what happened after that.

  • this movie was so sad... :( but it was so good i want to read the book

  • god im crying even through the trailer

  • 7 people dont have a heart

  • Everybody who's arguing about this missed the whole point of the movie. It's anti-war, not anti-America or anti-Japan. Grave of the Fireflies is about what war can do to anyone, and it just happened to take place in Japan. So you can all just shut up.

  • I couldn't watch the end cuz I cried soo much

    I was 7

  • I really feel uncomfortable eating durning this movie.

  • If you want watery eyes, watch this movie! ;,,,,o)

  • i watched the movie and right when 'that part' was showing or the end of the movie i was bawling and my mom heard me and she started asking me why i was crying and i only pointed at the screen and she still asked questions and at that point my face as in my pillow. my brother warned me about this movie. but this is still a awesome movie

  • just thinking of this movie could bring tears to my eyes

  • Really great movie.

  • Anyone know the name of the song in this trailer

  • Just watched the movie today and I can honestly say it's a beautiful, but painful movie to watch. I'd highly recommend this to my friends. This is one movie you should watch at least once in your lifetime.

  • when i was about 5, i was obsessed with the movie spirited away. my mom wanted to find another movie like it so she picked out grave of the fireflies (without knowing what it was about)... do i even need to say what happened after that?

  • @OneEyedGecko exact same thing happened to me

  • The saddest anime film ever ! :'(

  • OMG i only watched this yesterday and it was AMAZING!. Basically my sis (who's ten) found this movie while searching for new ghibli movies (Though I know this one is old) and thought this was a normal type of ghibli movie like 'Spirited away' and me n ma sis started watching this it was soo intresting and gripping and even my mum sat down to watch with us (Normally mum hates animated cartoons. She says their rubbish) and we all cried! Even better then anne frank!

  • @Cobac Do the words "Rape of Nanking", mean anything to you? The Japanese were not above killing civillians. And before you go calling me a mindless american anti-Jap scum, I beseech you to look at my username. I love Japan, but back then they were not as they are now. The Bushito Code governed their lives, and so they would only surrender if an incomprehensible amount of force was shown.

Tl;dr: There was no other way, but that doesn't mean it was a good thing.

  • I really don't feel the desire to watch anything that sympathizes with the Japanese after what they did to the Chinese and to American/British POWs during the Second World War. We wanted to end the war as much as anyone else and they refused to surrender even when defeat was inevitable and it was for that reason alone that we undertook actions like the firebombing of Tokyo. So you have my pity but not my apology.

  • @HealeyIRA5 I can see what you mean. The Imperial Army we're right bastards to the Chinese in Nanking and other areas, as well to us in Bataan. I think one of the main point of the film, though, was show to how destructive and self damaging the regime was even to to it's own people, and how the prolonged conflict resulted in the unnecessary horrors that befell Seita and his family

  • @HealeyIRA5 what did you say mr hiroshima and nagasaki ? may i remind you those were not army bases ? and just innocent cities ? what you say POW ? americans do the same things in POW camps they torture and kill what else .

They didnt atack civil cities ? so yeah

  • @Cobac You need to study some history man. Americans did not kill any prisoners in camps and they only used the atomic bomb with the thought that it would save lives in the long run. The Japanese killed 20 million Chinese and attacked the United States during a time of peace without a declaration of war. We were fighting for our defense against the aggressor that was Japan.

  • @HealeyIRA5 It is as you say my lord .

  • @HealeyIRA5 still, an atomic bomb is extreme. I recognize that there was a lot of damage from the Japanese can't discuss that, and at the time, no one saw any better way of solving things but by paying back the prize at a higher rate. Still, the effects of the atomic bomb still lingers. No one can even go through Hiroshima or Nagasaki, OR its surroundings without the danger of radioactive damage. Now they are practically phantom cities.

  • @XSannaX2 The bomb ended the war. If America had been forced to invade Japan, which is what they would do if we hadnt developed the bomb, many many more lives would have been taken- of Americans and Japanese. 'Operation downfall' was expected to claim millions of japanese lives. It also put an end to a war that could have dragged on. Using it opened up a pandoras box- sure. but I believe it was necessary for ending a war with a country did not accept surrender.

  • @Lisagb3 Necessary? I still don't think so. I know that what you are saying its true, and your arguments are good. Still a nuclear bomb... have you seen photos, records or anything about the concequences it causes? Its pitiful , do you know how much lives it affects besides the ones that directly received the attack? Anyway, violence only leads to more violence. Next thing we know, no human being will be alive because of it. I guess I'm a dreamer, but I don't believe it was necessary.

  • @HealeyIRA5 r u stupid? the U.S started it first and second japan wasnt the only ones torturing and i think its pathetic for china to be losing badly against japan because they were way smaller as a country.

  • @HealeyIRA5 The citizens are not the same as the gov/military

  • @jamiebibo I agree completely, but you have to understand that to the United States the young men who were drafted to fight in the Pacific were just as much civilians forced into war as were the people in the Japanese cities that were bombed with the intention of driving Japan to surrender and save the lives that would have been lost in an invasion.

  • @HealeyIRA5 im saying the movie is sympathizing with a family/people. not vilifying the us so much as war in general.

  • I like this film, dislike the trailer though. sorry

  • this movie is sooo sad :(...this makes me appreciate my nephews who annoy the hell outta me..yet they adore me, even when i'm mean to them sometimes...<3

  • I fucking hate it when people whack spoilers all over the comments. Thanks.

  • sorry maybe I have no soul but i didnt feel sad at all after watching this and this movie wasnt very good

  • @melgibsonsballs everyone is entitled to their opinion on a movie..

  • Really sad, but beautiful too.

  • i cried .... i cant believe that the director actually made a sad movie ..... there was nothing happy in the moviee..!!!!! i hate it ..... it's to sad to watch ..... dont watch it if u already did !!!

  • Comment removed

  • Im too afraid to watch this movie couse i think i'll cry like crazy :/

  • my heart turned into dust and almost killed me

  • just finished watching today i feel soooo sorry for the little sis idk why he didnt go back to his aunts house

  • ...Oh God. I can already tell this is going to be a tear jerker. I've been told to watch this movie so many times it's not even worth saying. But, I'm trying to waste time. UGH. I almost teared up in the fricken trailer....=_=

    Well...off I go....

  • it was an honor to watch this movie

  • what's the name of the song played please ?

  • does these 4 people have a heart !! ==''

  • I accidentally saw the live-action of this while trying to watch a Japanese sitcom with a similar title. It was so, so sad. The aunt was a bitch 'til the very end.

  • :(

  • This...movie...was...so sad T_T

  • This movie was sad, indeed it was. But I'd be able to watch it again.

He was a kind brother. I hate his fucking aunt and all those heartless people, even that fucking doctor. And when that fucker said to the boy "despite that, it is a lovely day" or something like that, I felt like slapping that old man across the face.

  • Watching the trailer already broke my heart. Am I normal??? 0_0

  • @MadFugu

Just shows you have a heart my friend

  • Ok this is my favorite Anime!!!</3Heart breaking!!They don't deserve to die like that!! Dosen't it kinda make since that Fireflies by Owl City goes with this Movie.?Not just bcuz of the title bcuz of the lyrics.Just my opinion.

  • I never thought my heart could be broken over a film. I was depressed for a while after watching it. I don't think I'll ever have the strength to watch it again but I sure recommend it everytime.

  • this movie killed me.

never cried so much in my entire life.

    never gonna watch it again.

  • This movie is so freaking sad! And i only watched the first part of this!!! I didn't want to see this again because it was just so sad. Tear.

  • FUCK YOU US AIR FORCE

  • @cydarkangel1 Why fuck USAF? They were just finishing what Japan started.

  • @xThunderxWolfx u need to learn history U.S started it by taking away oil supply moron

  • @MrAnimefreak1992 But which country was the first to drop bombs? Shut the fuck up and weaboo somewhere else.

  • @xThunderxWolfx they dropped bombs because of bitches like u would die so u shut the fuck upu cunt

  • @MrAnimefreak1992 Exactly, they used a childish reaction of violence, and got their country leveled.

  • @xThunderxWolfx so the U.S was a chicken shit at fighting so they dropped an atom bomb on civilian cities yea thats cool and thats why every country hates the U.S cause their fucking retarded and theres nothing but fat racist rednecks.

  • @MrAnimefreak1992 Ever hear of the Rape of Nanking? That happened too, and the Japanese are far from innocent. I'm not saying the US was right to bomb them, but the Japanese had their own atrocities that you should probably be thinking about. Nasty things happen in war.

  • @Jonathan1850 of course but its bad that the U.S has to involve themselves in everything.

  • @MrAnimefreak1992 You realize that if the US didn't enter the war the Nazis probably would have won, right? The involvement of the US in WWII is universally considered a good thing. Especially to the Jewish people, who were victims of genocide by Adolf Hitler.

  • @Jonathan1850 so it had to take at least 4 countries to win against 2 countries? thats just bad.

  • @MrAnimefreak1992 by saying that you sound like a fat racist redneck, you are very ignortant

  • @ojiaz123 im ignorant right first im not fat second im not a redneck and third im only racist against some americans that r fucking retarded. so ur a dumbass

  • @MrAnimefreak1992 careful your ignorance is showing better check your IQ test....

  • @ojiaz123 like im going to listen to a person that has a troll for picture get a life

  • @MrAnimefreak1992 u mad bro?

  • @ojiaz123 why would i be mad to a person that has no life and just likes to troll people for no reason whatssoever.

  • @MrAnimefreak1992 you mad bro?

  • @ojiaz123 nah lol

  • @MrAnimefreak1992 this "troll" sounds less ignorant that you...

  • @ojiaz123 oh were u suppose to say than instead of that u fail.

  • @MrAnimefreak1992 just so you know, the Japanese murdered millions of innocent Chinese because they deemed them subhuman. Hundred of thousands where tortured to death in extremely gruesome experiments. the rape of Nanking was so gruesome that it shocked even the Nazis.

sorry to break your fantasies about glorious Nippon, but they where extremely far from being poor victims.

  • @Ofir84 when did i say they were victims? u need to learn how to read. i just think it was pathetic for china to be losing with a 800 million more people than what japan has population wise.

  • @cydarkangel1

watch it my dad was in the air force

also: i agree with xThunderxWolfx, Miyazaki is my idol, but i am with the US on the dicisio to bomb the japanese. HAVE YOU EVEN BEEN TO PEARL HARBOR?!?!

i would watch what comes out of that mouth of yours before someone diciedes to punch it you jerk the US has more balls than you ever will.

  • @Maplefeal1211 U suck dude

  • @Maplefeal1211 That sounds as if you're exchanging lives. Pearl Harbor for Hiroshima and Nagasaki, that's cruel. I'm not saying there's no motive on being angry, but these are lives we're talking about, not some war toys-- they were lives that didn't even had anything to do with what was happening appart from living in the countries in conflict. What faut did they have on the whole war? So in a sense, I kinda curse at both fo being so cruel on innocent people.

  • @Kyon871 dont be an idiot. the americans cut off oil supplies to the japanese before that. it was inevitable that they would retaliate. and im not japanese im just saying

  • @jamesmartinwalker i know when people say the japanese started it their just morons

  • @Kyon871 wow your stupid the U.S started it dipshit

  • it looks so sad

  • dont think i could watch this without being a little hurt afterwards never mind

  • sadly, i'm not a big crier, but this movie sure made me feel hurt and pain and sad and depressed. this is one of the most profoundly human animations i've ever watched and i don't think people should pass on the chance to see it.

  • I cried the entire time I was watching it. I started crying even at the first two minutes. This film hurt me so bad that I don't know if I can watch it again.

  • i almost killed myself after i watched this anime.

  • I've never seen this movie because I'm too afraid of what it might do to me psychologically D:

  • @xxASIANxx1 it's one of the saddest movies i've seen in my life--it's brutal and horrible and painful---and also probably one of the most beautiful stories ever. you have to stick it out through the brutality because if you can you will come out of it a better person in the end. do yourself a favor and watch it.

  • this movie makes me want to be a better person specially with the unfortunate ones ='(

  • If you're going to watch this movie, don't buy it, because once you watch it once you'll never be able to watch it again. At least for me, it broke my heart worse than any other movie i've ever seen.

  • i have never seen this movie but im gonna go get it. i love anime movies!

  • same here it made me sad and almost cry i have all the movie creators dvd set

  • this is by far THE saddest move EVERRRR but dang is it such a good movie.

  • This movie made me cry. :(

  • this film makes me cry every time i watch it - it's amazing. x

  • This film made me cry for abou ten minutes. It made me think about my little sister and what I would do if something like THAT happened to her. :,(

  • I..I.... I Co..Couldn't sleep the night I watched..... Watched This (Breaks out crying)

  • I think being American I am disqualified from watching this movie, because I don't feel the least bit GUILTY THAT WE BOMBED JAPAN! T.T *Cries in a corner*

  • @Vaesyr The good old fashion heartless American

  • @goe5 At least I feel bad about it.

  • @Vaesyr - Do you think perhaps that (ie. USA lack of empathy) may have something to do with the reason why America continues to bomb another country every few years whilst Japan, China, South America, Europe, Africa, UK, Australia, New Zealand do NOT? Asshole.

  • @CanticlesInProgress Hey! I regret the bombing of Japan, why the hell are you calling me an asshole!?

  • The people who disliked this video are the aunt, her husband and her daughter..

  • How can a cartoon make me so cry like? The OST is really sad.

  • This is 1 of my favourite films. I loved it. I would really like to get into anime but when I see other anime I usually dont like it because it is too hi tech or too fast moving or too childish. I did like Kino though. Can anyone tell me of any other anime films that are similar to Grave of the Fireflies? Thank you for you help.

  • @jonathan45278 i think barefoot gen is an anime film (i read the manga its so sad :() its a true story and is about the authors experiences during WWII, and living in a town where him and his whole family were called traitors for not supporting the war and were badly treated.

  • @jonathan45278 oh but it's really graphic i've heard, so just beware

  • @jonathan45278 i think howl's moving castle is like it

  • @spiritstallion100 Oh yes! Howl's Moving Castle is THE best movie ever. Any movie from Studio Ghibli you should check out. They are AMAZING. All anime, with not to flashy hi-tech anime.

  • @jonathan45278 There are lots of fine animes like this one :) Like "My Neighbor Totoro", "Howl's Moving Caste" or "spirited Away" are wondeful movies! :))

  • So, so sad and I haven't even got the DVD...... yet... T_T

  • best antiwar film ever

  • the trailer is trying to trick viewers into watching the movie only to have them shocked to the bone and overcome with sadness.

  • This is the only movie to make me cry, I was 11. It is a great and sad movie. I can never watch it again though.

  • my daughter and neice watched this at 10 and 6 and they sobbed for half an hour after it was over

  • Man, the trailer alone had me in tears.

  • i don't know who could dislike a film like this. I've only been able to watch it once because it broked my heart. Watching it a second time would be a torture. saddest movie i have ever seen in my life.

  • @ccs45595 exactly how i feel about it, only watched it once had me in tears, and I don't normaly cry over movies...

  • I've only ever been able to watch this movie once. It was so heartbreaking. I mean, I read the synopsis and everything. Totally knew what was coming. Still ripped my heart out and set it on fire. Even after nearly two years since seeing it, I can remember every bit of it and still get teary eyed at the thought of it. :( But to anyone who hasn't seen it: Don't be put off my everyone saying how sad it is. Watch it. It'll change you. (Not in a bad way.)

  • When the Rich Wage War, it's the poor who die.

  • Saw this again about a week ago, great movie changed the way i see things the first time i saw it. Yes its a sad film but i dont get why that would stop anyone from watching it, its sad but its so powerful that you have to watch it. Also a little tidbit for those that dont know or are just planning to watch it, the film is based on a semi-biographical novel written by the author as an apology to his sister, having that knowledge makes the viewing experience a bit more memorable.

  • LETS GET THIS MOVIE ENOUGH VOTES TO GO FROM 124 TO 1 ON THE IMDB TOP 250

  • There are some films that make you feel sad, there some sad parts in films that make you cry. This film did not envoke sadness at least to me, no this provoked GRIEF rather than sadness. Good god, this is one of the saddest movies I've ever watched. To all those reprimanding each other for giving away spoilers. I did spoil it for myself by reading wiki and I knew what was going to happen. And even then I cried at this. This a special superb film that alot of people need to watch.

  • your guys comments make people think to not watch due to sadness...whatever

  • the ending of this movie killed me....

  • Happy family movie - watch it! Like "the Waltons", but in post war Japan

  • ;(

  • Oh, I wanted to watch this movie but now when i see all coments about how sad the movie is I dont know if i want to see it anymore.

  • @ShadowSmith756 yes and you think you're the only one or what? you really felt that it was necessarry to write that here? you just made the movie not worth watching, you fucking spoiler.

  • @ShadowSmith756 you are so daft, it's fucking indescribable

  • @ShadowSmith756 nice one for spoiling the film jackass. Write SPOILERS at the beginning if you want to talk about the film

  • the best movie/anime of all time .. MASterpiece from Ghibli !

  • This is 1 of the best films I have ever seen. I own it on dvd & watch it occasionally. It is a 1 of a kind sort of film. Both the characters are loveable. I get tears in my eyes watching it. It does have a sad ending but that makes me like it more. I think not all movies need to have a happy ending. I feel richer having watched it. I wouldnt let young children see it tho because of the sadness & harshness. None of my friends could be bothered watching it because they think it is a kids film.

  • I cried like a baby at the end of this movie T.T

  • @popolynn2 how come?

  • this was a funny movie

  • @popolynn2 How??!!?

  • sadface :(

  • I Went To Bed All Depressed Nd In The Morning All I Could Think About Was The Movie ;( I Love Movies Tht Make Me Cry But This One By Far Was The One Tht Really Got To Me :(

  • This trailer in no way prepares you for the emotional tidal wave you'll feel when watching this movie. Make sure to have a few rolls of paper towel near you while watching this, so you have something thick and solid to wipe your waterfall of sobbing away.

  • The trailer almost made me cry.
