  • Elevator music anyone?

  • dam I hope they did not give up =(

  • I'm really sad that SED had to die. I was *really* looking forward to this. I can't stand LCD technology.

  • this is not just another video monitor technology but a revolution in display technology. the other revolution is high definition and the first color t.v. this SED display technology improves contrast ratio by 50,000:1 that NO other monitor currently on the market can handle.

  • SED still has the biggest issue CRT screens had! IT SHOOTS ELECTRONS DIRECTLY AT YOU....IE VERY BAD FOR YOUR EYES! ! ! ! !

  • epic vaporware

  • I wish SED tv's went in production quickly, i can't wait to see the benefits.

  • my fw900 crt passed all thoese tests in the video :)

  • @taltigolt

Umm I think you're looking at a youtube video mate. Unless you got the original footage they were using for the demo and A/B'd it with the SED panel, you'll be rather mistaken.

Thing about SED is that it uses discrete electron emitters per pixel, this allows colour calibration and ridiculous frame rates without any flicker.

So I think you'll find that while the Sony CRTs were nice 'an all, this would wipe the floor with any CRT scantube

  • @bishopdante Gotta agree, although that fw900 still is a beast of a display by today's standarts... Still can't find an LCD that's good at everything ^_^

  • @SpiritLwerewolf

LCD is horrible. Do a screen full of orange and then move your head up and down. Shocking, it usually goes from bright yellow or even green through to deep red. Viewing angle = colour.

Those sony tubes are indeed the business, although there are a few post-production grading CRT monitors by Sony which deliver even better results. Still sold today, new for about $50k.

  • @bishopdante On an IPS the colors aren't that bad :) Still not a CRT though, but I needed WUXGA badly...

We'll see how long the zr24w will last once I get a 22'' 4:3 tube next to it though :> Certainly will take over for gaming duties (playing warsow on the LCD is insanely limiting).

  • Sad that SED is dead, LCD & Plasma tech still sucks compared CRT Tech and it's derivatives

  • @funk192

Patent war casualty. Greedy corporations. Mm.

  • @funk192 SED is not dead it is still in dev mode =(

  • SED is over since 2007 lol

  • Future alright.

I almost feel like I'm in the 80's with the amount of cheesiness in the VO.

  • FED or SED is the future

  • I want SED or FED to be the future of display tech.

In theory, we could have SED screens right now at a decent price... OLED is just a dream, we won't be able to buy a 40" OLED screen for less than €2000 untill after 2015 at least...

  • Comment removed

  • I truly think SED is amazing and I'm wish they started producing, but what I really want to know is one thing that IMO still makes CRT's king today - the ability to display lower resolution images just as clearly, unlike LCD which smears them all over the screen due to it being pixel based (OLED will be pixel-based too) - so I'm wondering - will SED do the same thing and will older games, videos etc. in lower resolutions still look like crap? (Try 640x480 on LCD, you'll see what I mean...)

  • Also, (and a little off-subject) why hasn't anybody though of putting a transflective backing to AMOLED displays? The method failed on LCD's because it reduced the backing light emitting through, but on AMOLEDs the light is being produced above the backing, with a transflective backing, we could use them just fine under the sun.

  • @jubeh

    What the hell? Transreflective backing?

LCD is a transmissive display, that means that it *absorbs* light. LED is an emissive display. Making the material reflect more ambient light will do you no favours at all.

What you want as a backing for an emmissive display is maximum absorbtion, ie: black.

When OLED gets good enough, it'll be very bright indeed, and perfectly able to compete with sunlight

  • is this technology still being worked on?

Call me old fashined, but I'm still holding on to my 34" HD tube because it's display technology, as old as it is, is still the best thing out there.

SED (and FED) are a promise to bring back the image quality us old-timers are used to in a thin packaging, and I think I'll continue to hold on to it until SED displays become available.

I'm also a fan of Amoled, so I wish for a perfect future world with SEDs at the home and Amoled laptops/cell phones.

  • theres gonna be alot of tech to choose from in the next 10 years. led, oled, sed, laser and by 2018-2020 nanotech. this decade there was only lcd/plasma (not so much dlp), and the decade before there was only crt. gonna be badass

  • One of the main problems with LCD is high contrast - in daylight, LCD looks washed out. Each pixel on an SED TV is basically a CRT TV, so the contrast is as good as CRT. SED has fantastic viewing angle too. How much power it consumes is anyone's guess! Mind you, most LCD TV's use more power than an old style CRT television - not very green eh? But they tend to keep that fact as quiet as possible. The 'greenest' TVs are rear projection. ;O)

  • SED is more energy efficiant than DLP and TFT :)

  • water fuck the OLED, and the duration live is too short. Is inviable.... sed vs led will be the batle

  • Ya idiots don't even know what SED is. Before saying Oled is better please do research or better yet don't make stupid comments that little kids do. Or even better yet shoot yourselves and save us the trouble of reading dumb comments.

  • I've been keeping an eye on SED for a few years now. I fundamentally understand how it works in comparison to CRT and I truly believe in this technology.

There are many parameters by which one can describe picture quality but to my eye, a high specification, well configured CRT is still streets ahead of any other display. LCDs, Plasmas and so forth have their good points, but I still don't like them much yet.

I really do hope SED comes to market soon. Picture quality is paramount for me.

  • OLED is 10x better

  • This IS THE FUTURE OF TELEVISION!!!!!!

  • noup. OLED is

  • what ever happend to these? why wont they go to production?

  • Basically the recent recession caused cutbacks in research and development for higher end electronics like this. Canon put out a statement saying that they thought consumers saving money right now made it a bad time to introduce expensive TVs. Hopefully, we see them in the next 2 years.

  • the video is slowed down!!! anyone couldnt see the letters!!! my samsung series7 47inLCD does not blur with motion, it has 120 Hz auto motion, this is BS if it was so good we all would be using it!

  • you have to see this display in person to truly appreciate it. The camera used to shoot this can't keep up to the display. There isn't (nor will be) a LCD or Plasma or even OLED that can compare with these. The reason they haven't been released is that there is an ongoing legal battle between Canon/Toshiba and another company claiming they invented this tech.

  • yeah but what is the price of one of these TV's, say a 52in SED to a 52in samsung LCD with 240Hz automotion? ( i use samsung just b/c in my opinion they have the market locked down for LCD and Plasma's) the Samsung LCD 52in is around $2400, how much more is a SED going to be? and will it be worth it? Samsung makes a very nice LCD IMO! took me a year to pick out the right TV! great a legal battle! we will probable never see this TV in that case!

  • I am unsure on the price of SED, I heard it should be around a comparible sized LCD... Sony have said their FED TV (which is more or less the same as a SED) will be priced alongside LCD's of the same size ...from what I have read. Even if it is a bit more, to get CRT PQ, lifespan, in a flat panel I would pay the extra

  • great ! everyone is going to be doing there own thing huh! sonys have always been over priced! what kinda life span are they looking at? My samsung LCD is good for 60,000 Hr's, i hope i run into one of these some where so i can see it for my self, cuz i find it hard think there is a better picture out there then what i have now, but ill give it a look.

  • SED/FED is not a new tech... in fact has been around since the 70's I believe anyways as far as life goes... it should be as long as a normal CRT tube, maybe even longer considering the less distance the electron beams has to travel and most CRT's aren't measured in hours but in decades. As far as LCD having a better PQ than a CRT, or CRT based tech, it hasn't happened yet, and doubt it ever will due to the inherent nature that LCD displays cannot generate their own light.....

  • ..you can colour correct all you like with software etc., ( driving a white light through a colour mask (or blackened one) you will wash out to an extent the original intent, whereas CRT and based tech produce their own light/colours at the same time with no 'washout' effect. I thought my tuned Panny 53" CRT RP HDTV had an amazing PQ (and yes I have compared it to various plasmas and LCDs) but the SED blew me away... it is like looking out a glassless window

  • Instead of all this new fangled display tech that keeps changing and with each leap forward (so to speak) there is a drawback OLED for ex. better than LCD they say, but has a lackluster lifspan, plasma was supposed to be the 'new CRT' but never really looked as good, and drank electricity LCD, initially blurry and terrible blacks and VA... had manufactures not wasted all these years on lesser tech and perfected CRT (SED/FED) we would be far ahead of what we have now

  • ill see it for myself one day... i have a 32'' CRT flat panel HDTV in my bed room and 47'' LCD in my living room. i had the HD CRT first and it was way better looking then any CRT i have had! BUT! my LCD with HD cable and Blue-ray movies look far far better the the CRT flap panel ever did IMO....i'm telling u Samsung has dont it right with LCD's! there are a lot of LCD's that just look like shit! i know....and i would never touch plasma TV's..

  • my LCD has amazing colors, very deep blacks.. to the point that u cant tell if the tv is off or just at a black screen, its all in what the buyer likes these days...some ppl LOVE Plasma, others LCD's...and some that still want the old school tv's that are like a 150 Box. when SED hits the market and i like it better then when i have then ill get it, im not sayings its not good but i cant judge it b/c i cant see it.

  • LCD's originally lasted for about an hour in the labs when research began on them but the lifespan grew bigger with further research.

According to Sony OLED displays are taking the same route and remember they're working with 'ORGANIC' material

In about 4-5 years when OLED TV's hit the stores their lifespan would have increased greatly, probably even more than LCD's and CRT's combined.

  • Lifespan is about the only thing worthwhile in terms of why I'd want to buy a television besides picture quality.

Considering society was stupid enough to give both up for shit LCD televisions makes me worry that we will get stuck with futuristic crap.

  • OLED displays didn't even exist when SED displays were first shown.

Do a little bit of research and you would know that SED displays have been cancelled due to the advanced picture quality of 'OLED' displays.

That kinda makes all the SED fanboys sound stupid and outdated.

  • SED's technology has been around since the dawn of television considering its just a revamp on CRT's.

The only way we will know for sure is if both hit the market. And considering HD CRT looked better than the shit we have now I wouldn't be surprised if SED is better than OLED.

  • @ManicMonkeyJ

Sony still make CRT 1080p monitors for the broadcast industry. Nothing else delivers the same performance. This is, however, because it's mature technology.

LCD will never look very good. Plasma and OLED will doubtless look really really great in 30 years time.

  • The only way we are going to know is if both are put up against one another and are looked at the same time.

  • SED hasn't launched because:

#1 The manufacturing process relies upon perfect vacuum and glass plates which can't flex separated by millimetres. An LCD factory costs about $1 trillion, and there's 5 of them for the world right now. Making all these screens, more screens than we've ever had on the planet before. A *lot* more screens. Process is much harder than LCD.

#2 The patents for the system are hotly contested by two companies who won't share patents. Feud. It's that good srsly

  • OLEDs are going to suck because of all the brightness they produce giving you a uncomfortable experience like a Emerson TV.

  • LCDs cause eye cancer people would be dying from old tube TVs if that was teh case.

  • Hmm... looking into the tech behind SED-TV, I'm not sold. Sure, the colors are better, but going back to a electron cannon concept? Can we say cancer?

I think I'll wait for laser's price to drop. :/

  • CRT's/SED doesn't cause issues, but you would rather sit in front of a laser beam?

  • Ray tubes create various types of radiation. I know that they fall within the limit of the FDA, but I'm never too sure about it. I would rather see the defused light of a laser beam. But that's me :/

  • i know why seds arent sold eaven now,

"are so real you can almost taste them" sounded way too stupid ^^

  • admitted oleds are great improvements on the current market.. people ive done my research and basically sed's are the future time will prove that if u dont want to do research... BUT before those tvs get cheap to produce.. so in the meantime other technologys like oled can flourish..... sed is an inovation of old school crt... its just basically crt built individually per pixel..

  • refresh rate is too slow. it's choppy

  • that would be the youtube video. never judge tv's based off of youtube videos shot on low quality cameras

  • do you have an SED NO! you're viewing this on either an CRT or LCD.

  • It's the video. Sony showed a similar type of display running at 240fps

  • oleds are better this has a contrast ratio of 100000:1 and oleds have 1000000:1 10 times better in that area i dont see the draw for this tech since oleds will be far cheaper

  • I think they have better color accuarcy than OLED though, at least for now. So although the colors on OLED may jump out at you like a neon sign SED or FED will immerse you in a more realistic experience.

  • waht the hell

  • i so want one of these.

  • Meh! SED is too little too late. Plasma and LCD TVs are geting better all the time and OLED TVs should be around the corner (though OLED TVs have been 'around the corner' for a couple of years now :( ).

  • This is suppose to be the new generation of CRT. It's the CRT reincarnated but a lot better. It was supposed to be the LCD and Plasma killer. I've waited and waited and waited for the release but stupid Nano-Proprietary Technologies killed it!!

  • farken stupid nano idiots

  • Last I read from Wikipedia, it's all sorted out and they've got the green light.

  • yeah, but they halted deployment for 3 years...

we could have all been buying 72" SED for 2K$ now :P

  • I think its rather ironic that one has to resort to viewing the demonstration of the next great leap in digital screens on YouTube.

    My question is when?

  • I think its rather ironic that one has to resort to viewing the demonstration of the next great leap in digital screens on YouTube.

    My question is when?

  • it has higher contrast ratios by far(yes thats important) has much better color and far deeper black levels and even though its impossible to notice a difference since your viewing it on a screen with lower capabilitys than sed tvs, its an awesome picture with blisteringly fast response times and no motion blur

  • dumb video but SED rocks Cannon just needs to sell the patents to Sony and were off like they sold FED patents.

I hate LCDS with can't seem to use them.

  • A good rule of thumb when viewing demonstrations like this on, say, youtube displayed on an LCD monitor is to look at the demonstration and mentally check how it compares to something shot 'live', that is how much the video looks like it was shot at a screen vs. shot at an actual location. I, for one, was actually fooled for a moment - for a split second I actually thought the person standing in the foreground of the street scene was actually there!

  • you are a sandwich short of a picnic, all this video is supposed to do, is give you references

to note when SED is avail in stores,

  • take a look guys. In full 320 x 240!

    320p FTW!

  • another sandwich short of a picnic, use the points mentioned to check out SED WHEN ITS IN THE STORES

  • well by this demonstration, youtube and my computer lcd, has reached the sed quality

  • ba ha ha h aha ha ha

  • forget to take your medication?

  • and thats about as much sense as you probably

    have

  • Stupid video. How are we supposed to see any detail via a crappy flv file! Or anything but an SED display. Just stupid!

  • the only thing stupid, is your comment,

how dumb can you be, all this video does is give you refernce points to note when the

SED set is in the stores on display, you are

two sandwiches short of a picnic

  • i don't know what she's talking about image depth or texture for, it's got nothing to do with the tv, the only thing that determines that is the broadcast signal

  • this video is very crappy because its a recording of a screen and its a youtube video. Oh and they will be availible everywhere dumbass. Not just austrailia.

  • not to mention the fact that none of us are watching i on the sed screen

  • Why is there a black horizontal line in the middle of some of the scenes?

  • It can still be blurry if whatever you're playing on the TV is intentionally blurry.

  • Good. They are producing more efficient means of transmitting subliminal messages to us through media.

  • Anything was a bit blurred on my lcd notebook screen haha!

  • SED = the future of tv / monitors

  • Don't look now, but something as retarded as a lawsuit of patents has stalled the progress of SED to market. It's nothing to gloat about for OLED buffs. If Canon turns totally to OLED, it's not predicting decent sizes until at least 2009. ENORMOUS SED TV's should have been on the market already... Pettiness..

  • if my TV can view that spinning letter without blurring, why they mention this feature on SED. lol

  • Because there's blurring on LCDs.

  • What about Laser Tv?

  • Well, Laser TV seems to have no demo screens out right now, and the only possible example of one is a 120-inch model they're considering to put in Chinese movie theaters.

  • Mitsubishi has working laser tv's that they say will be ready for mass production within the next 18 months

  • good information bloodyfuton. Be sure to add they will only be available in Australia Christmas 2008 at the earliest. Like the kids on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.. I want one NOW!

  • OLED is struggling to either increase to even standard screen sizes, and survive beyond a thousand hours. Plus, SED outperforms them in current picture reproduction and forecast resolution.

OLED is thin, and potentially transparent.

    No chance? You're dreaming.

SED is set to become huuuuuuuge.

  • now all we need are SED quality video cameras..

  • Canon, I hate that female voice. If it is really quality, let the viewers enjoy the perfection to its full appreciation and opinion.

  • I could see the depth on this vid it is amazing. I hope these come out soon.

  • if you can see the depth in this video, it means that your monitor is capable of reproducing the same image quality. It is a video of an SED TV, so what you are seeing comes from your screen.

  • So is this more likely to become mainstream than OLED displays or what?

  • I really hope this SED thing pans out because it seems perfect for gaming...

  • SED TV: With the right price LCD and plasma will be dead & forgotten...Probably first launch will be the 4th quarter of 2007. DO i want one? YES!

  • Plasma, Lcd all this crap its al lthe same shit.. onyl a lsoer notices the difference.

  • I'm sure if you weren't witnessing it via not only a camera but your own screen, the screen would actually be REALLY impressive, and you wouldn't knock the clarity vs. blurring thing.

  • sed tv have 10000/1 contrast ratio :)

  • my anus just prolapsed

  • si ca peux faire baisser les prix sur les lcd et plasma alors tant mieux! Mais j'attendrais pas leur sortie etant donne qu'elle aura lieu dans 5 an comme le dit un autre commentaire.

(=If this can drag down LCD's & plamas' prices then fine with me! but I won't be waiting for these ones as they will probably go out in 5years time as another comment states.)

  • It's true it's hard to tell a lot in the limited quality of a YouTube video, however it's easy to see that the contrast is so high the camera can't even keep the whole thing in its exposure range. That woudln't be true for most LCDs.

  • wow, a lot of people are really impressed by this. Don't know why...the video quality isnt even close enough to discern a difference between LCD, Plasma or SED.

  • 996tt their is a HUGE diffrense between sed and the unsucssful lcd/pdp , yes pdp/lcd is getting better but never wil it even touch the tip of the ice burg of the sed tv , basicly sed is all of crt tube PLUS more CRT TUBE is the best quality no matter what , sine the biggest is only 38'' and no hdmi or any new inputs or 1080P is taken thats where sed takes over and kills pdp/lcd ... here is a few quick pics to tell the diffrense RIGHT away

  • you don't understand. The video quality is no where near good enough to tell how good the SED is. SEDs are that much better than Plasma. LCD will be the dominant technology for a while.

  • oh you mean this video yes i know toshiba/cannon have 2make a big annoucement with detailed stuff to bring attention to ppl so that anticipation will be great sort like the ps3 halo 3 one of the tech between lcd/pdp might survive for a bit i think its lcd due to the cost right now the only decent affortable lcd is the sony bravia 2500 or xbr if you want to go high end spend 8g on pioneer elite but thats just stupid as sed in this year will be this cost well for begaining prices maybe more

  • Christ man is your keyboard broken?

  • I won't turn in my trusty CRT until this comes to market at a reasonable price. Interesting that their demo tape is all cuts to/from black. Wonder why.... Also, in the interview (next Video) they say this is a 720P display. If that was impressive, imagine a 1080P display. I need to see this with my own eyes!

  • Looks interesting. It will be probably 5 years before we see them in stores at reasonable costs. Until then CRT is the way to go.

  • God I can't wait to hook up a 1024p movie to this kind of TV. It will almost be as good as going to the movies.

  • I think u got ur terms mixed up. There is no such thing as 1024p, it's 1080p.

  • Right you are.
