  • Biela I think was expecting Odor to go onto the other side of the barrier (non grass side) which would account for him keeping in a straight line. Unfortunately Odor suddenly stopped where he did and that`s the reason for the crash. The other thing I see are no brake lights from Odor and that would surely suggest that he was unconscious after he hit the barrier before Biela hit him. If he were conscious he would have reversed the car onto the grass perhaps. -daz in oz

  • why do people think Biela did this on purpose? its pathetic! he didnt want a good friend to be killed...and if he did he wouldnt have become BTCC champion the next year... O'Dor was popular and it was a sad accident but thats all it was...an accident...seriously wtf do people know? you cant stop a car that quickly when going 150mph!

  • @Ryan831754 Watch out for Keith...

  • like if u went back to the initail impact cos they cut it off the second time

  • I wanna say Biela's hit killed Oder, but when Oder hit that wall, there was no response, in the steering, brakes, or gas. I didn't even see him moving inside either. So is it possible that Oder may have died before he was even hit by Biela?

  • What the fuck was Biela looking at? He has a hundred meters to see what was in front of him, and then the guy shits himself and instead of steering to avoid him, slams on the brakes and locks up his front wheels. I'm surprised at this more than anything.

  • @TeifiValley123 You clearly haven't driven a car on a track at 100mph+

  • @trashguy no. youre right. I've ridden motorcycles on the Manx TT at 150mph+. But i suppose that isnt good enough for you, is it.

  • @TeifiValley123 I suspect keith would of lived and you would of been a stain if you were on a motorcycle instead of a car.

  • @trashguy if you've finished with your undeserved sense of superiority, ill say it again, since it wasnt clear enough the first time. How did a professional driver fail to avoid a stationary car in the middle of a straight, when he had about 100 meters to react. He had way more time and space than the first 3 cars that passed Odor. So why did he panic? What i'm alluding to here is, it was a shit piece of driving that cost somebody their life.

  • I worked with Keith at janspeed many years ago,his father jan never got over the loss of his son.

  • Watch the car BEHIND the one that hits him. That is how you brake and retain control!

  • If you really watch the video he hit the wall with more force then when the other car hit him. When he hit the wall it tore the whole side off so to me it is unclear what killed him the wall or the fact that he was unprotected when the other car hit him. Also if u blame the guy that hit him u really know nothing about racing. That guy was trying to pass on the left then the car started coming across the track he decided that there was no way to miss him so he slamed on the brakes.

  • @dan2millerlite Yes, he 'slammed on the brakes' and seemingly stayed on them even after locking up. Pointless, and very very poor driving to do that. He should be arrested for killing the guy.

  • Keith Odor died when Frank Biela's Audi crash in Odor's Primera. In fact,Odor ran with right-hand driver.Biela hadn't any guilts for that crash.Only bad luck wanted to death Odor.

    RIP Keith Odor.

  • Did the crash with the barriers kill him, or the shint from Biela?

  • @MegaMrDamo its hard to tell, i didn't see much reaction after he hit the wall. it could have knocked him out and the t bone killed him. or he might have died as soon as he hit the wall. that was a violent hit on the wall.

  • It helps if you speak dutch. The Audis' front tires locked up under braking making it impossible to steer (visible in de video), the blue car was right hand drive which is why the driver died (also visible in the video).

  • @guacamolski mate, the fact that they were locked is the audi driver's fault in the first place!

  • When Biela hit O'dor's car, the door, as you can see, ended up quite a bit into the car, where O'dor because of him driving a right side driven car, were sitting. The door hit him and he got severe head and internal injuries.

  • How did that actually kill him?

  • @xxxIRossHi Look at the damage on the drivers side door after the audi hits it, its half way through the car and that primera was a right hand drive car

  • Odor had bad karma in this crash. Had his car been left hand side driven, he would´ve still be in life threatening situation, concerning how hard the car hit the wall.

Biela propably had his plan to avoid hittin Odor, but plan didn´t work out because Odors Nissan suddenly stopped. Only a slight slower speed for Biela could´ve saved the situation.

  • @GordonSmileysCorpse Fuck off prick..

  • Obviously not many of you have raced before. In that kind of traffic, at those speeds, it is almost impossible to predict where an out of control, and damaged car is going to go. It's also terribly difficult to avoid hitting a car that is blocking half of the track. Racing IS a blood~sport, always has been, always will be. Those of us who race, or are close to racing as often as possible know this is part of the deal. Placing blame is pointless, everyone on that track knows the risks. PERIOD.

  • Biela did the wrong thing, and I'm sure it's something that regularly troubles him.

Clearly he didn't realise that Odor's car had stopped, and did what drivers are all told to do, which is to aim for the car because it won't be there by the time you arrive. Seems like target-fixation did the rest, and by the time he realised he was on course to hit, it was far too late to stop.

A little jink to the left would have been all it needed. It's like he had too long to think about it.

  • the commentators are dutch tand explain the crash and end with: "Odor was driving the race of his life....it resulted in his death...."

  • Frank Biela was driving the Audi, not only that he is also one of the best drivers in recent memory, about 5 24 hours of Le Mans class wins i don't know how anyone could say he puposely did this, or that he is a terrible driver.

  • @SaintBEEP I agree with this, but he didn't lift, and kept the power down, then had to lock the brakes. He should have been on idle while making the decision.

  • Dont care he could have missed him!

  • i read some comments saying "look hes aiming for him!" well how about you shut the FUCK up and learn something about driving on a racing track?! like thelostlibertine said, you are tought to go straight if cars are moving across the track since the chance is just the same to miss it compared to when you try to avoid the wreck.

PLUS, he hammered the brakes, thats why he couldnt have manouvred the car anyways. its not his fault you dumbfucks. get some common sence and respect!

    jeez....

  • @grinmaster1 Well said

  • Frank Biela is one of the greatest sports car drivers ever. Watch the replay again, you are taught as a driver to drive at an object that's moving across a track or turn toward the direction it is coming from. This is exactly what he does, in the slow mo the car is out of control clearly, he has locked brakes and he's lost the back.. accidents do happen and mistakes are made. Even by the best. RIP Odor

  • this is murder

  • 28.09.1995!! this year on 28.09 is it 15 years a go! R.I.P.

  • even though i don't know the Guy...... and i can't understand what those commentators were saying....

it's still sad that he got killed :(

  • wow, what a great attempt for the guy to miss him......NOT.

  • i lost my girlfriend today morning... i maybe go today too... no, im not going!!

  • @SharkysDeathVids Have some respect.

  • its bc he slammed on brakes, first lesson in dodging wrecks at least for stock car drivers is no brake just let off and steer. rip

  • I think this was what prompted the closure of Avus

  • wrong day to drive RHD

  • aww he panicked and locked up. thats fucked up.

  • I think he could have avoided that, even if it casued him to go off as well - it's a small price to pay for not killing a fellow racer

  • that audi driver is a RETARD, RIP Keith Odor

  • @Kuriousgorge87 And why is that?

  • @Enten901 why is that?? he calls himself a racecar driver if his reaction is that slow? he hit him head on...and dont tell me its becuz they are going high speeds he had plenty of time to swirve out of the way...

  • im also surprised at how that car was unable to avoid him like the cars infront of it had. he had much more time to react. very sad for both of them.

  • Biela isn't at fault in this crash, anyone that has been close to crashing at high speed will tell you that when something suddenly gets in your way and you only have a split second to react, 90% would brake as hard as they can instead of trying to swerve around an obstacle... It's a natural human instinct, that when something goes wrong you wanna slow down. Odor made the exact same "mistake" as Biela a year earlier, where Tarquini spun, and Odor plowed straight into him!

  • @skynet0912

And you would know being an expert!!!

  • @skynet0912 No one knows for sure if he was at fault, but he certainly DID have more time to react than a lot of the others who successfully did so, had he been paying attention to what was going on on the track..

And certainly doesn't seem to care whether Odor was okay or not, he ran straight off the track. For *that* he is an asshole.

And the "natural human instinct" of braking instead of swerving...I guess I'm an alien or something because I did both when I was in an accident with a semi..

  • @skynet0912 You're right, but only for the first four drivers that passed him. Biela definetely had enough time to steer left or right and not just hit the brakes.

  • @resublimationFlo he had the time, but it depends when his brain processed what was happening - even the best/most experienced can freeze with shock occasionally.

  • @Lukeno52 true, no doubt. guess he was just too surprised to react "properly".

  • Was the first hit against the wall or the second hit by the other car. that first hit seems really hard and its on the driver side...

  • @JorgeLBM Driver's side, passenger's side, bonnet side or anywhere else: a crash from any point of the car can be fatal to the driver inside - maybe the body is crumpled in such a way on the passenger's side, or the glass penetrates somehow or the shock is too much for the nerves. Tragic, but could've been avoided.

  • @JorgeLBM Notice that in the videos where we see him get in and out of the car his driver side is the opposite of classic german driver side, it was a japanase version of nissan).

  • I not trying to be nasty but Beila could have reacted much quicker and probably saved Odor's life. Beila should have seen Odor's spin out up ahead of him and he should have slowed down accordingly. He broke far too late and it cost Odor his life. Just look at how quickly the guy brakes behind Beila after he impacts Odor, that's quick reaction. Regardless of that still a tragic accident rip Keith Odor.

  • how did that guy not avoid him? he slammed on the breaks and skid right into the driver's door...

  • Odor's car was definitely going left. So, even though it seems to be some space near the left wall, Biela couldn't avoid the Nissan, as this would have been resulted in hitting the wall hard, and probably Odor's car too.

  • So his brakes locked up and there was nothing he could do? Why couldnt he just release the brakes and then go around? For me it just looked like he panicked. I'm not here to blame him, thats jus the way it looks.

  • @BigAngeloSantorini There was a large amount of debris to avoid on the left, he was working on both things and confused himself is my guess. Obviously the debris is the prefer hit, but he was already committed to the inside of it.

Also, the first impact with the wall may have been enough at that speed to kill a driver alone. It happened at Adelaide in V8, albeit at a higher speed.

  • Everyone blaming Frank Biela is just stupid. He couldn't just swerve to the left he would lose the car control the wheels locked. And it takes a while to full stop from such a high speed.

  • I agree VrOOm, you can see the smoke off the tires from him slamming on his breaks to avoid hitting him...

  • Rip Keith !!

  • R.I.P Keith

just imagine what frank biela was going through after the crash though it must of been hard

  • show some respect you prick

  • at 1:20 you can see the car is right hand drive

  • Comment removed

  • i actually think dat keith died wen he made dat first impact towards da wall cus dat was a hard hit if u ask me

  • yeah plus Beila hit the right hand side and i think the car was left hand drive

  • The guy had more time to avoid Odor than the first 3 cars that passed by Odor....

  • @zbab198 Agreed but there was 4 cars that passed him before he was hit. How could he not have avoided him? You see a crash so you slow down regardless of how many places you lose. This is exactly how accidents happen, cars should be electronically controlled in situations like this, so they can all be slowed down to a safe speed.

  • @zbab198 His wheels locked

  • Comment removed

  • @zbab198: On an outside point of view it looks like he has time, but No there is no time if you are doing 160kmh, Biela was anticipating that Odor's car will swing to his left with the remaining inertia of Odor's car, as you can see Biela is poised to go to the right if and when Odor's car swings to his left, but instead the brokern left front and rear wheels caused Odor's car to stop abruptly, causing Biela's attempt to avoid Odor's car an error.

  • @zbab198 i personally wouldnt even thought about slamming my brakes fully on i would of thrown it to the left (barrier) and rub it up the side

  • @zbab198 The reason he hit him was because he didn't realise that Odor's car would swerve back onto the track. The rear wheel on Odors car was broken, causing the car to veer back out into oncomin traffic. This accident was simply a racing incident that could not have been prevented. Biela is a great driver and should not, under any circumstances be blamed for the death of Odor.

  • There was no way Biela could avoid hitting the Nissan

  • RIP Kieth

and all of you who are blaming biela are ridiculous. Look a couple seconds before impact, biela was sure that keith was going to keep his car to the left of the track but instead kieth allowed the car to drift in the middle of the track. plus biela's brakes locked up. its just unfortunate. no blame should be put anywhere. so lets stop blaming the guy going 140 miles an hour. its his job.

  • Agreed. Sometimes your brain doesn't funciton quick enough to avoid some accidents while racing. I've been in an accident similar to that just because I didn't use the right tools the car had to avoid it.

  • RIP Keith.

Only a person who knows nothing about racing blame Frank Biela.

  • Everybody seems so quick to blame Frank Biela. Do you honestly think he purposely hit Odor? Come on.. watch the video. It's obvious Biela's Audi locked up under the hard braking. There is not much you can do at that point. It's just an unfortunate part of racing sometimes.

  • In the afternoon before it has brought to command Nissan the first victory in this racing series

  • It looks to me that Biela`s Audi went a little bit right on the braking. Maybe he couldn`t dodge left because of that? The speed was also quite high and Odor`s car was still moving across the track so... That`s racing, even professionals kinda freeze sometimes in awkward situation.

  • the fact beila still gets in a racecar after that should tell you something about his character

  • no it doesn't tell me anything about his character. it tells me he's a racecar driver through and through. why wouldn't he keep racing?

  • The Primera moved across the track in front of Biela at the last minute into Bielas path, and at about 120mph with only say 1 or 2 seconds to react, there wasn't really anything Biela could do.

Carontespeed - I'd like to see you handle it better than Biela.

  • why biela don't turn?

  • no, its M3s.............and thats the bad side of motorsports...

  • Keith is in a Nissan primera and the car there crash into him is a A4 or A6

  • nice m5s

  • god made a place for people like u its called hell u should try it

  • No such thing as God, heaven or hell.

  • Can't blame Biela ... he committed to brake before hitting the car, in that split second. Didn't have much choice, the car in front just turned the wrong direction. After he committed to brake, he could never turn the wheel as easy anymore ... bad luck. Motorsport is dangerous.

  • at first i was like wow that didnt look fatal it was on the passenger side then i heard them speak and i remembered it was europe lol but this is sad

  • O.o wow ur right ...... D:

  • The unlucky part is, this race took part in germany where the driver is located on the left side of the car.

Keith Odor was a british driver who wanted to drive the british configuration, where the driver is located on the right side of the car. If he had the german configuration, perhaps it wouldn't have been a fatal crash.

  • lmao

  • I love how they put a circle around his face. Yeah, I didn't realise it was that person you were talking about.

  • that, and the fact that there's no one else in the picture :P

  • LMAO You are so right..."we're gonna put a circle around the only person on the screen we are talking to so that you know who we're talking to"...sigh...poor guy though....I bet the guy in the Audi feels like shit. RIP man

  • give beela a brake! imagen how he felt, he was injured and just killed someone accidentily.

  • Biela is an ass. He doesn't even check the car and guy he hit :(

  • Biela did exactly the right thing. He's not a doctor, so what is he supposed to do? If he went and "checked on the guy he hit", all he would accomplish is get in the way. Chances are it wouldn't have made a difference anyway.

  • you say it..

  • I think Biela could have swerved rather than just locking his brakes. O'dor was unlucky though because his car was right hand drive from when he raced in the BTCC whereas all of the other cars were left hand drive.

  • Biela war at about 220km/h there, then you don't have any time to think about the right reaction. He stayed in the middle to be able to pass the car on both sides - not expecting, that it ends exactly there...

  • Bullshit he had plenty of time to react. Had his first reaction not lock up on the brakes. He could of held the brakes and turned the steering wheel left or right. I'm sure he could have still turned the steering wheel. Could have been prevented.

  • It's just sad to blame Biela for Odors death... crashes like this and bigger has happend many times before, without injuries, Biela knew that to, so thats why he didn't check on him. Odor was just unlucky, just like Senna, had that front suspension not poked through his helmet he would have survived. but it did, and there was nothing Williams could have done to the car at that time that would have prevented it!

  • Correct

  • He could see the accident coming out of the corner, he should have been going a lot slower knowing their was a crash ahead...its common practice in motor racing...u dont need yellow flags to see that! I blame the audi driver for not slowing down EARLIER! Why did he hit him at 100mph?

  • i seem to remember having a ticket to see a race in the BTCC, on the back it said "motorsport is dangerous"

i think O'Dor knew that when he got in the car. I also think that Beila did not have full visibility due to the tyre smoke.

I KNOW that if any fault was to be ascribed to Biela for his driving, Audi for the braking system or Nissan for the saftey of the car, it would have been done by now.

moaning about Beila hitting him doesnt change anything girls.

    RIP Keith

  • cameras see through smoke better than the human eye does.

fuck if i had a fiver for everytime i heard martin brundle say that i wouldnt need a job.

  • the 2 other audis managed to avoid the nissan, but surely Biela knows better rather to jam on the breaks. He's a real knob just like the guys that drive Audis

  • Shit Audi, they are just egoists!

Biela is an idiot, merits of which he is healing.

Look he just ran away, and lets odor die.

    R.I.P. Keith

  • yeah, that driver should never be aloud to be on a racing track again.

  • you know who that driver was? Frank Biela, who has since amassed six Le Mans 24hr. victories. Don't know what he was playing at here, he's a much better driver than to do something like that at such a dangerous spot.

  • That was some bad driving from the audi. You could see him locking his wheels, and thats why he crashed into him

  • had the car of biela(audi) no ABS??

  • Uh its a racing car? Very few racing cars have ABS.

  • now did keith die prior to hitting the wall, or was it hitting the wall, or was it the audi that creamed in to him, or could it have been a bit of two and three..

  • the nissan was right hand drive. so it was the second impact with frank biela

  • I worked with Keith and His dad in the early 80's at Janspeed in Salisbury.Whatever people say Keith was a real nice guy,not arrogant or fame hungry.Just a real decent lad. (he was the storeman at the factory at the time)

  • wtf, the audi has loads of time to move out the way :S

  • happens alot faster then you think...quite often drivers will even aim for the car when it is still moving as it will often move to the side...this one came rate back into the middle of the track...had he have made the move to go wide without break, then yea he would have made it...

  • In 15 years of watching BTCC I never knew how this man died. I knew was it was in a car accident. I had no idea it was a racing accident.

Yesterday I lost my Grandad in a way that he wanted to go - in his own bed, with his wife next to him.

At least Keith died doing something he loved. I'd want the same.

And I think its incredibly disrespectful that there is so much bitterness, rudeness and resentment going on in these comments. Respect each others opinions or put something tasteful.

  • @dclark1985 Im sorry for you loss. And i agree with you.. I cant understand how people can be so disrespectful. I hope that karma is coming their way.

  • Frank Biela must be very proud of himslef, he had all the time in the world to avoid him but nooooo.

How about step on the brakes for a change you fucker.

  • Unfortunately thats racing, that bit of the track is 120mph, all Biela is concentrating on is defending and thinking about where hes gonna brake for the following left hander. As you can see, he tried to turn left, unfortunately in the surprise of the incident he locked up his wheels under braking.

Even racing drivers are humans too y'know, they aint super heros.

  • cmon man, he shoulda bankt left. even if he lost control atleast he would have given the guy a chance 2 live. he probally couldve bankt left w/o breaking, shit... 1 guy banks right, then the next left, then a guy drives str8 and misses. next, he hits him. the guy behind him even came close 2 a complete stop!

  • biela should have just turned but instead he braked and locked up which caused the crash

  • isn't he on the opposite side of the impact? why did he die!? . who made his crummy roll cage! . this is a damn shame!

  • Cause he was so used to racing in England he had a right hand drive car

  • he raced RHD

  • oh ... that sucks :\

  • No he was driving a right hand drive motor as he was used to it racing in the UK.

  • He didn't have even nearly as much speed as the second car.

  • Comment removed

  • Imagine yourself there. You're travelling at 200km/h, and you see car spinning on the right side of the track. In fraction of a second the rear of the spinning car turns just in the way where you're heading.

You couldn't do anything else than just slam the brakes, like the guy in the silver Audi.

  • fraction of a second ? He had 3 sec's to turn the wheel.

  • Yes, the car spinned from the side of the track to almost center way less than 3 seconds.

You cant stop either turn the car as much as needed at those speeds.

    geez, learn physics.

  • Guy in 1st silver car had far less time and he did a good job.You tell me to learn physics? SOB I got my 1st PH before i was 20 so STFU your wrong and i'm done talking to your ass.

  • Comment removed

  • Like it says below though...the speed these guys travel it's a gut reaction to just stamp on the brake pedal....would love to see what you would do if a car pulled out in front of YOU!!! you'd do the same...jam on the anchors cos its instinct to do so....

    RIP Keith Odor....

  • I wonder if even today's safest race cars are enough safe to avoid fatality in such crashes.

    RIP Odor

  • I think they are, Tom Kristensen had the big one in 07... I still think that it's bad luck or a bad angel that kill drivers today.

Marco Campos fatal accident is a good example, had he struck the wall in almost any other way he would most likely be walking away.

If a formula 1 car of today hit the wall the same way he did it would still be fatal... It's the circumstances, not the cars lack of safety, that kill the drivers of today

  • I realised a pattern that minor crashes always have fatalities while major crashes don't.

  • Wrong, it was the impact against the driver's side of Kieth Odor's (Yes, Kieth, not Keith) right hand driven car. This crash happened at such high speed that avoiding was more of luck.

His left front suspension or tire are beleived to have failed resulting in the first wall hit, as a result of his hard way of taking the temporary curbs on the Track.

Note: The Avus was an extremely fast temporary race track installed on a piece of Autobahn in Berlin and the race was an STW race, not DTM.

  • if you've talked to frank biela, you get a feeling that this crash is in the back of his head. almost like a little black cloud looming above him. but i think he knows that was a terrible accident. frank is great great guy.
