Interesting fact. This was the first music video in Chinese popular music history. From watching documentary. The movie was controversial in that it brought music from the streets to the silver screen. This particular type of song and lyrics were typically sang by street prostitutes in Shanghai. (Hence the erotic connotation to the lyrics.) The composer broke barriers by bring this style of music to the screen and made Zhou Xuan a pop music super star of her time.

It was written as one of the lead song for her breakthrough movie.The person who wrote the melody only passed awaw 11 years ago in his 90s. The person who wrote the words,also wrote the words for Chinas National Atham, and he passed away in 1968. He had a bad time during the cutural revolution period....sadddd

@6955ken I think 周璇 was 17 when the movie was made (according to the documentary). She was as innocent as the movie portrays her to be - this belies her life in later years which was full of tragedy. Even though she made many movies afterwards, her first film 馬路天使 for which this music video was made, remains her favorite.

for those who don't know this version is first and "naive" movie version... it is supposed to be carefree and rough around the edges. the later version is slower, more emotional and sad. the version that people should hear is the studio version that appears on most audio collections.

It depends, Most people now write from left to right, if we write horizontally. However, if we mean to write vertically, we usually write from right to left. But traditionally, we write (and read) vertically and from right to left. So you just have to get use to it, I guess.

@lauls85 Writing style also depend on period. In the Ming dynasty, horizontal writing was left to right. In the Qing dynasty, it switched to right to left. The republic period it stayed right to left, until it was later changed to left to right.

It is sometimes funny to see ancient Chinese signs because the writing order changes from left to right or right to left depend on how old it is. People do get confused.

All songs of Chou Shuen were released by Pathé Records Company of Shanghai. Now it is named EMI. This company remains all songs of hers. You may buy from any records shop. I bought many records of hers while I was in Hong Kong. Unfortunately I abandoned all these records in Hong Kong coz I immigrated to Brazil. These records were very heavy. Each one weighs ???. Glad I can hear songs of Chou Shuen here.

Hey! flor here frm Singapore. Maybe the one you heard is the Cantonese version. I've heard both versions.This Mandarin version above is sung by Zhou Xuan. The Cantonese also sang this song in their own dialect. My nanny is a Cantonese and she sings this in Cantonese...I know Mandarin, Cantonese, Hokkien and Teochew *( a jumble of Chinese dialects). All the dialects hve different enunciation and intonations. Hope this helps...I can sing for you in Cantonese- heh!

Thanks for your comment. But the record that I first heard Zhou Xuan from was an original owned by my grandfather. The first line was very different. And I speak Cantonese, too, so I don't think it's the different dialects that are confusing me. But what happened is, she sang abit of the first line, and the TV pple cut or JUMP FORWARD to the 2nd portion of the song. U get what I am saying?
