A tractor gets traction from being able to dig into the soil. On a hard surface the lugs reduce the surface area contact thus decreasing traction even further. had the tractor had only single tires with chains on it watch out as the surface area of contact would decrease resulting in a higher psi of surface engagement thus traction increase by 400% possibly.

Where I worked before retiring in 2007, the John Deere we used had tire chains on it. Sometimes ice would even win. Not too often however.

The weight of the machine is not enough! If you putt a counter weight on the back of the machine where you attached a machine, you would produce more force on the backwheels and then you have more gripp!!!

@HUMMERTHEBEST hey genius. chains do get traction on ice. chains dont work in snow, thats where lugged tires work in snow because they paddle through it. chains work on ice or hard pack snow where they chip into the hard smooth surface and bite in. next time you see a semi with chains on, look at the ground, its all butchered up under where the chains bit in. they even bite into smooth concrete surfaces too.

There's some wheelspin but that doesn't mean he's in trouble. He's actually demonstrating how to use momentum when there's limited traction.

With no chains snow plowing is like that. You don't want to use them unless you need to, at least in urban environments they equal unnecessary damage. Plus they might be illegal sometimes, or forbidden by your contract.

A plow that wide is also fine as long as there's only a little snow or you got good traction from exposed pavement. Otherwise it sucks.
