I much prefer the single-minded stoicism of Maximus. (Although Gladiator almost did the same thing — I think it was something like the sixth writer attached to the film who finally realized that having the vengeful hero become romantically involved with another woman really took the wind out of the whole "avenge my family" plot.)

And just to give William Wallace some justice, he didn't muck with the princess out of lust -- he did it in order to put a stop to the English King's bloodline. The Prince which the Princess married was a homosexual and the King had plans to conceive a child with the princess himself. Wallace was merely saving the English from the wretched blood that ruled the land.

There are far more grotesque things in the Bible than this.
