i believe hugo and alice had crushes on each other right from the start of the series. hugo showed strong support for her, presumably because of his fondness for her, from the very first episode.

The music was a little too "la de dah, we're SOOO superior" for my taste. The choirmaster was a sweet little old lady- or at least that's what she looked like. She was EVIL!! and shutting her up required industrial welding skills
