they are olympic events because they are dynamic interesting and have all got very close times from winner to loser, making it great to watch for competing countries. its a hell of a lot easier to pick a winner in this than in lion taming.

But many other activities have those same attributes -- such as motocross, tightrope walking, lion taming, etc. It would be silly for those to be Olympic events. And it's silly for skeleton and luge to be Olympic events.
