I think you did a great job, he should be proud. :) You can get a gorillapod which is like a tiny flexible tripod to help steady and save achy arms. I just searched and there is a cheaper non official gorillapod on Amazon search for "Mini Grip Flexible Tripod Stand" and it should come up. Also resting your camera arm on something solid also helps if you have no tripod. :)
