@IndianaPentecostal23 Also, when the 19 was orginally built in 1915 she was built as a coal burner, but was converted to oil when she was sold to a Mexican mining firm in 1920.
@IndianaPentecostal23 When they did Emperor of the North, the oil tank was removed a smaller put in place it was covered with a coal load as well as replacing the standard baffle type firebox door with a butterfly type. And yes they did shovel real coal in to the 19 during the movie, but since oil burners have a solid firbox floor, a special catch was built inside the firebox to make it easier to clean out all the coal the was thrown in during filming.
@SierraRailway Correction to your information, the 19 was not built for the McCloud River Railroad, it was built as #4 for the Caddo and Chotcaw Railroad in Arkansas in 1915. In 1920 was sold to the Cia de Real del Monte y Pachuca Railroad in Mexico. The McCloud River purchased the locomotive in January of 1923 and it was given the roster number "19". Also the 18 and 19 are nearly identical sisters, they are both standard Baldwin catalog desgins, 90 ton logging mikados.
The Yreka was a great operation. It's sad that they have been mothballed, and that 19 is for sale. The old girl is in great shape, and could steam on for many years. So sad.
@Chris9017 the line is not mothballed and the 19 is no longer for sale. We do have some operations moving sotred cars until freight comes back which negotiations are in the works now to do so. The 19 is currently down and we just performed a hyrdo test on her this week in anticipation of pulling excursions later this summer. You guys really need to check your sources before you post all this false information...
@sitp2 Correction...the 19 is no longer on Ozark Mountain Railcar and not leaving Yreka anytime soon....me and other fellow volunteers are currently putting together a list of projects and are set to begin work on the 19 and other railroad aspects to prepare for a 2010 season
so how did the Yreka western come back? I thought freight operations were cut because the mainline railroad serving them was abandoned. Did that line reopen yet? oh, and I watched the "Shasta steam" program, thats where I'm getting my info.
@SierraRailway The YW never went anywhere to begin with. The Central Oregon and Pacific did not abandon their line, it has been "mothballed" for now. They actually ran a freight testing new locomotives they bought about a month ago in anticipation of returning freight over the Siskiyou's. The line between Montague and Weed is still open as CORP brings us cars to store for UP and the occasional propane car for Suburban Propane in Yreka.
Great video. I do have one correction though. No. 19 hasn't spent her whole life on the YW. She was orginally built in 1915 for the Caddow River Lmbr. Co. in Arkansas. In 1920 she was sold to the United Mining and Smelting Corp. in Mexico. Around 1924 she was sold to the McCloud River Railroad. In 1953 she went to the YW. She was transfered to the OP&E in 1970 on lease. During that time she was used in the film Emperor of the North. In 1988 she returned to the YW when the lease was ended.
You have a good eye for shots. I only wish everyone posting videos would spend a few dollars on a tripod! That would make your's and so many other's shots spectacular! So many shots look like their shot during an earthquake!
yea, (emperor of the north) lol....sounded pretty good then :P...but whistles do start to lose their original sound....take 4449's old wornout Hancock 3 Chime.....

where does the 19 run now?
imagreatbigman 2 years ago
Unfortunatly No. 19 is no longer running because the YW Operation is selling her at $645,000 OBO. It's sad that the operation is now over.
Coming soon, video for the campaign to save her.
