The name of this tune is "Stratus" by Billy Cobham. It's off the Spectrum album. I know because I used to play it in bars in the mid 70s. This is a nice version of it.
Looks like he's playing through fender tweed twins. The bassman has two ports at the base of the back panel but I don't see any on these amps but I could be wrong. What is this sound at :28?
Hi Lynn! Thanks for writing me! I guess I thought if you were that close, you must have known someone pretty "high up." I met Jeff once on his way into a soundcheck at Massey Hall, here in Toronto. I asked for an autograph. He was pretty gruff, and muttered, "Not now, I can't right now." After the show, he did, and we shook hands. I'm a guitarist, (as you can probably guess!), and I used to play with Neil Peart, - we still keep in touch from time to time. Cheers!, Joe
Did someone panic at the end? I'd have thought anyone allowed to film that openly, (from the stage no less), wouldn't have been bothered. But then again, even if you have a pass, I guess if you don't have consent...
well, truth is, I wasn't sure if they would mind or not, and since I was taking it with my still camera, it was not too obvious but once staging authorities got closer to me, I didn't want to chance getting grimaces since I was grateful to be there...
I know I know, Im a sexist pig. but my god she is hot and she doesnt back down in the least. You can just see her saying go ahead and give it your best. I can hang with the big boys. And that just gets Jeffry to turn the heat up some more. great line up
I have been playing the guitar for 32 years and have been told by others (I HATE SAYING THIS) that I'm amazing. No I am not, this guy is the one. If you want to hear the player that every rock/blues guitarist should look to for the truth (pun intended lol) here he is. Clapton, Page, Frampton all three hail him as the best, and so do I. Rock On Jeff indeed!
@vanshipman What you say is right ! But the original solo from Spectrum is made by Tommy Bolin and for me one of the best guitarsolo ever. I love Jefff Beck brings the soul of guitarplaying out. First time I saw him in 1977 with Stanley Clark this was one of the best concert ever.I
Song: Stratus. Only prob. w/performance is after the start it's hard to hear the keyboards on many songs there. Tal had only been playing bass for 3 years at that time, too! Vinnie Coliauta is amazing on drums- check "Zappa plays Zappa" the Black Page, part 1 & 2" on YT, Bozzio does an incredible job on drums there, it was also once Vinnie's spot, and a drummer's nightmare of a song. This performance convinced me that Beck is probably the best guitarist alive technically.
Risky bery your an idiot period. You couldnt hold a candle to anyone on that stage and I dont care who you are.... People like you should go in a spider cave with Sadamm hussein
I was lucky enough to see a half dozen shows on this tour and Vinnie SLAYED the drums on all the classic 70's fusion songs in Jeff's repertoire. IMHO he outperformed what was cut on those amazing records night after night and Jeff is timeless... He's STILL the epitome of a MASTER! Jeff is who all the other players look to for inspiration. His touch is unparallelled. Rock on for many years to come, Jeff...

Bass players playing same notes to much, Keyboards up to high, Drummers hitting simbals to much, And Im to picky, But yea I like my music well, And This is the First and last time I watch this video.
It's Beck's choice however , not being in a commercially successful band. The offers have always been there. He frankly just does not play very often, has other interests that he would rather pursue. It is a shame because there is nobody better with a guitar.
Weird to see Jeff with Fender Bassman's instead of his trademark Marshall gear. Just goes to show how much tone is in technique, approach and phrasing, not just gear. He still sounds just like Jeff Beck here. I wish this would have made the final Crossroads DVD, kind of blows what they edited out!
I agree. This should have been on the DVD. However, I heard that Jeff was the one to choose the songs to be published on the DVD. He was possibly contemplating another video publication and did not want the same songs published on different DVD's. Of course, he is very self critical from what I have heard so maybe he didn't feel he was the best he could be on those songs not selected by him to be published. It's a theory.

why is that kick drum so loud? Its the same with any modern setup. the kick and snare sound wierd. This song wont work unless it sounds like it did on record.
the kick is probably so loud because of where i am standing on the side of the stage .....drums are right next to me, and the stage monitors are too....

She is 22 year old Tal Wilkenfeld...you will soon see her name on many CD credits. She has been featured in Bass Mag and is a new sensation. She is an Aussie transplant and started out as a guitar player and moved into bass.
And y'all know what tune they're playin'? A Billy Cobham tune (probably co-authored by Brecker Bros). You can see his version on 'Youtube' (as well as on DVD, 'Glass Menagerie' methinks).
Maybe that was because Girlschool wre utterly hopeless - and yes..I saw them a few times upporting many bands in the 1979/80..and wne to an audition with them in Croydon with another guitarist so saw them at very close hand..nowhere to hide...very nice girls though !
Check out the live stuff from 99, I would say the girl playing in his band did okay. I saw that tour in Atlanta and he gave her ALOT of stage and lead time.
The difference between MR. Beck and the rest is that NOBODY SOUNDS LIKE HIM. He does stuff that nobobdy else can do and he does nasty or beautiful whenever he wants. There is no one like him. Except maybe on Mars.
Hi! Marie's advices are all goods, she's very sensitive! All, or neazrly, that she had told me to mook-at was good! The Bassist is a 21 years old woman, but if she plays with Jeff Beck, there's a reaso,;she didn't made any demostration, but we can trust J.Beck, he wouldn't have played wuth her if she wasn't f....gly good!5***** for her, and for J.Beck's way of playing!
Crossroads DVD: Beck says he had "BB King Live At The Regal" on his car stereo in '63, & wondered if he'd ever get to America. ...B U T W A I T... : "Regal" was recorded live October 21st 1964! Beck was in the Yardbirds by March 6th, 1965, the soonest he could've heard it, and he new darn well he was gong to America: They had a huge hit, ("For Your Love", done when Clapton was still with them). Jeff, you're a great guitarist, but you're full of sh*t.
knew, not new. after 42 + years, no one's memory is super accurate. hell i don't even know what i ate for breakfast. maybe 63 should have 65. typo, just like NEW. GIVE JEFF A BREAK. he kicks ass, and at least he's jammed with bb and all the greats. bb refers to him as slammin' jammin' jeff beck !!!!!!!!KING OF SONIC OVERLOAD !!!!!
I Love JB , but think it's a made up story. Not a matter of memory , but of his life circumstances when this record came out. The story just doesn't fit together. Sorry, dude, but that's MY story, and I'm sticking to it!
I've been a bassist for 45 years and know talent when I hear it. Tal is an exceptional bassist. Serious chops and taste. And young, too. Wait until artistic maturity gets 'hold of her. Jeff is in the same category: chops, taste, imagination and artistry. Oh yeah, maturity has already gotten ahold of his ass. Didn't slow him down, though.
Anybody recognize the piece they're playing? It's called "Spectrum" from a 1974 Billy Cobham album of the same name. He and Jan Hammer wrote it, I believe.
The song is called "Stratus" on Billy Cobham's -Spectrum- album. The late, great Tommy Bolin played with Jan Hammer on it. The legend is that Jeff heard Tommy's sick playing on it and decided to get into fusion, thus making the -Blow by Blow- album.
Thanks SDdoubleJ. Guess I should have pulled out my vinyl and gotten my facts straight. I did remember Tommy's crucial involvement but ran out of space in my comments. Too bad about the Tommy vs Heroin tragedy. What a talent gone to waste.
No problem! It's too bad Tommy didn't get a chance to clean himself up. In fact, if I remember correctly, the night he died he had just opened up for Jeff Beck in Miami. Check out Tommy Bolin and Friends live at Ebbets Field 1974 for some more great playing.
Yeah she is excellent. I listened to other clips, she plays with great musicality. The fact that if she was a he and it would not be as impressive might be true, but from what I read, she has been only playing 4-5 years! That alone is pretty impeessive to me.
Maybe you just had to be there to witness the whole Beck performance cause she WAS exceptional. At 21 she plays as well if not better than many of her peers 20 years older. Catch them live sometime and then you will see what all the talk is about. It's not a "girl adjulation thing," its an intelligent observation by many including fans and credible talent...she just happens to be a girl and very young which makes it that much more unusual.
At the same time I see many 21 year old men that play just as well. I think it's condescending toward women to be surprised at her ability. It isn't like I don't know what I'm talking about. I've been playing Bass for 34 years. She's a good bass player but I honestly feel that if she was a 21 year old man she wouldn't be the "talk of the festival".
True we have all seen players that are better than others including the icons...but you may be misinterpreting what is intended as kudos as being condescending to her gender. She is inspirational not only to the minority in her field (females) but also to very young people in general who aspire to be exceptional and play with icons.
PS Talent assessment in music, as in most arts, is subjective and many at this festival thought she had an exceptional fluid groove and ingrained ability to instill onstage confidence for a boss who is not easy to do that for.
You do have a point there. Most 21 year old men with her ability tend to over play, show off if you will. She shows great restraint displaying her chops only at the right moments. This usually comes with maturity and years of playing. The chops come first and the ability to use them tastefully comes later. It's probably a male ego thing. Women don't feel the need to "strut their stuff". The fact that she's cute doesn't hurt. I expect to see a lot more of her.
you must be some ole lonely hater that has nothing else better to do but hate on Tal im a bass player my self and been so for 30yrs and i think she's a very EXCEPTIONAL Bass player so quit HATEIN!!!!!!
i am blond female. on crossroads dvd, I am stage side next to the young boy who is sitting next to Clapton during Albert Lee's song.... messing with my camera. then again, messing with my camera when Beck is walking out from behind the curtain to take the stage. hah...got some good still shots...I should post them somewhere....any ideas where?
no. i am blond female. on crossroads dvd, I am stage side next to the young boy who is sitting next to Clapton during Albert Lee's song.... messing with my camera. then again, messing with my camera when Beck is walking out from behind the curtain to take the stage. hah...got some good still shots...I should post them somewhere....any ideas where?
Maybe even here on YouTube, Flickr, MySpace, etc. I prefer here, they will be more widely enjoyed. Thanks, we appreciate these videos and pictures, this is great! Let us know where you post...
Famous as he is to guitarists all these years, Jeff still is not known by the general public--he's too good for the MTVer's. I really would like to see some great players like Robben Ford at Crossroads, to expose him to more people. And maybe Joe Bonamassa...
For someone such as myself, who is reconnecting with pop blues, this concert is excellent. I watched it over local PBS affiliate WNET on HD. Sound is tight. The show has been criticized for not giving enough time to greats like BB King and others, but this allowed for more time for many artists who are not as well known. Crossroads is a keeper.
Crossroads DvD is great! The quality of picture, sound and songs is definitely superb....and the ambience of the artists is captured. It's worth the buy. It's fantastic and also nice that the profits go to a great cause. Only complaint I have is that there are only two songs on it of Jeff Beck's, his call only to put two on ...so if Beck's set is the main reason you are buying it....hmmmmm

And y'all know what tune they're playin'? A Billy Cobham tune (probably co-authored by Brecker Bros). You can see his version on 'Youtube' (as well as on DVD, 'Glass Menagerie' methinks).
Beck plays Cobham - 'kn awesome!

Jeff Beck playing with 21 year old Tal! AMAZING!!! =)

It's good to see that the once sexist Jeff Beck has accepted that females can play the guitar.
Apparently in about 1980 when he heard Girlschool performing "Race With The Devil" he couldn't accept the fact that the lead guitarist was a woman.
chrisb1953 3 years ago
Maybe that was because Girlschool wre utterly hopeless - and yes..I saw them a few times upporting many bands in the 1979/80..and wne to an audition with them in Croydon with another guitarist so saw them at very close hand..nowhere to hide...very nice girls though !

Once sexist?
Check out the live stuff from 99, I would say the girl playing in his band did okay. I saw that tour in Atlanta and he gave her ALOT of stage and lead time.

The difference between MR. Beck and the rest is that NOBODY SOUNDS LIKE HIM. He does stuff that nobobdy else can do and he does nasty or beautiful whenever he wants. There is no one like him. Except maybe on Mars.

Hi! Marie's advices are all goods, she's very sensitive! All, or neazrly, that she had told me to mook-at was good! The Bassist is a 21 years old woman, but if she plays with Jeff Beck, there's a reaso,;she didn't made any demostration, but we can trust J.Beck, he wouldn't have played wuth her if she wasn't f....gly good!5***** for her, and for J.Beck's way of playing!

when i was watching this, the bassist looked like she was about 15, and she is AMAZING.

Wow, I like your posting, the sound is so different from upfront.
one question: did Jeff perform with 2 difffent bassists: Randy and Tay?
I see other vids here on youtube from the same concert doing the same tunes with either on bass.
tay rocks on stratus, randy on you never know.
what a thrill for jeff's fans who weren't there.
cheers.

Jeff, you're a great guitarist, but you're full of sh*t.
lazur1 4 years ago
knew, not new. after 42 + years, no one's memory is super accurate. hell i don't even know what i ate for breakfast. maybe 63 should have 65. typo, just like NEW. GIVE JEFF A BREAK. he kicks ass, and at least he's jammed with bb and all the greats. bb refers to him as slammin' jammin' jeff beck !!!!!!!!KING OF SONIC OVERLOAD !!!!!
rorygg1 4 years ago
I Love JB , but think it's a made up story. Not a matter of memory , but of his life circumstances when this record came out. The story just doesn't fit together. Sorry, dude, but that's MY story, and I'm sticking to it!

All we need for this now is Bill Cobham on drums-now there's a dream band..

SlappyZappa325 4 years ago 4
The song is called "Stratus" on Billy Cobham's -Spectrum- album. The late, great Tommy Bolin played with Jan Hammer on it. The legend is that Jeff heard Tommy's sick playing on it and decided to get into fusion, thus making the -Blow by Blow- album.
SDdoubleJ 4 years ago 4
Thanks SDdoubleJ. Guess I should have pulled out my vinyl and gotten my facts straight. I did remember Tommy's crucial involvement but ran out of space in my comments. Too bad about the Tommy vs Heroin tragedy. What a talent gone to waste.
SlappyZappa325 4 years ago 2
No problem! It's too bad Tommy didn't get a chance to clean himself up. In fact, if I remember correctly, the night he died he had just opened up for Jeff Beck in Miami. Check out Tommy Bolin and Friends live at Ebbets Field 1974 for some more great playing.
SDdoubleJ 4 years ago 2
Yeah she is excellent. I listened to other clips, she plays with great musicality. The fact that if she was a he and it would not be as impressive might be true, but from what I read, she has been only playing 4-5 years! That alone is pretty impeessive to me.
taikoking 4 years ago 2
That bassist is talented, but it wouldn't be so extraordinary if she was a man, which is unfortunate, but true.
blahman178 4 years ago
yeah that girl is a hell of a bass... i have the dvd and the solo she plays is out of this world
ronaldinho9181 4 years ago
Maybe you just had to be there to witness the whole Beck performance cause she WAS exceptional. At 21 she plays as well if not better than many of her peers 20 years older. Catch them live sometime and then you will see what all the talk is about. It's not a "girl adjulation thing," its an intelligent observation by many including fans and credible talent...she just happens to be a girl and very young which makes it that much more unusual.
LynnBerry 4 years ago
At the same time I see many 21 year old men that play just as well. I think it's condescending toward women to be surprised at her ability. It isn't like I don't know what I'm talking about. I've been playing Bass for 34 years. She's a good bass player but I honestly feel that if she was a 21 year old man she wouldn't be the "talk of the festival".
tbcass 4 years ago
True we have all seen players that are better than others including the icons...but you may be misinterpreting what is intended as kudos as being condescending to her gender. She is inspirational not only to the minority in her field (females) but also to very young people in general who aspire to be exceptional and play with icons.
LynnBerry 4 years ago
PS Talent assessment in music, as in most arts, is subjective and many at this festival thought she had an exceptional fluid groove and ingrained ability to instill onstage confidence for a boss who is not easy to do that for.
LynnBerry 4 years ago
You do have a point there. Most 21 year old men with her ability tend to over play, show off if you will. She shows great restraint displaying her chops only at the right moments. This usually comes with maturity and years of playing. The chops come first and the ability to use them tastefully comes later. It's probably a male ego thing. Women don't feel the need to "strut their stuff". The fact that she's cute doesn't hurt. I expect to see a lot more of her.
tbcass 4 years ago 2
You say Female bassist, Tay Wilkenfel was the talk of the festival. Why? I see nothing exceptional about her playing.

you must be some ole lonely hater that has nothing else better to do but hate on Tal im a bass player my self and been so for 30yrs and i think she's a very EXCEPTIONAL Bass player so quit HATEIN!!!!!!

If anybody has this DVD can you tell me if it is a good buy. Does it have good sound quality, picture, songs, etc. Please and thanks.
Red40Wings13 4 years ago
Crossroads DvD is great! The quality of picture, sound and songs is definitely superb....and the ambience of the artists is captured. It's worth the buy. It's fantastic and also nice that the profits go to a great cause. Only complaint I have is that there are only two songs on it of Jeff Beck's, his call only to put two on ...so if Beck's set is the main reason you are buying it....hmmmmm
