can you explain what that light colored framework around the engine is? Is its purpose to support the cowling only? I believe the diagonal member seen near the firewall is part the engine mount is it not? thanks
Its just that, framework to support the skin. The Yak-9's engine mounts is indeed the diagonal crossmember. You cannot see the rest of the engine mount as it is under the engine.

The scoop on the top is appropriate for a late Yak-9 without the chin radiator. Check out the Yak-9U at the Museum of Flight.

@GOZR Didn't have a choice, that's how Allison's get air to the carb. The original engines for Yak's are made from unobtainium.

@GOZR Don't know man, every other allison powered Yak around has the air intake in the top. Merlins is on the bottom.
