I always feel his playing has deep emotion and musicality and beauty. He also has a voice on the Bass that is very easy to recognize. Bravo, Renaud!!!!!!!
It really takes you on a trip to another place and time... he has a special charisma which effects your feeling and emotions in a new perspective not experienced before... like eating a special dessert enriched with exotic flavors ! Very nice work! Very nice!
Love it or leave it. For me it's brilliant and first of all this is solo playing. Who would want to listen to a solo being played with all the notes in the low register if there is such a thing it can only happen in the orchestra. This 5 string has a high C which Fons utilizes in a creative manner. If you're trying to be creative then you have to cross the boundaries. Being a bass player doesn't mean that you'll just be playing all the low frequencies every time. Be creative & Open-minded
o we all wanna sound like exactly like our predecessors??No We'd like to do something new, something more us..
Hence Renaud, I never get why bass players wanna trap themselves in by saying its bass your not suppose to do that. or slap isnt cool or soloing inst right.. We wouldnt have electric gtrs/basses or hendrix/Jaco/wooten if everyone thought like that... I'm always pushing the boundaries.. Not looking for the lines to hold me back..
I feel sad for anyone who can't appreciate what Renaud is doing... Anything that you think is "tradition"... I can tell you when it wasnt tradition. Every music we listen to and every instrument we play has builded upon it's predecessor and has moved in some sort of direction away from that. Music is not stagnant it's ever moving somewhere else.. Music is suppose to be REAL Emotion. Not just notes on a page. If that is true Renaud, Then So SHINE Renaud!!
I mean, saying that it doesn`t sound like a bass...
Just put a nice cello video on and compare man, it is not all in the pitch, but the tone of the sound. If you say it doesn`t sound like a bass, it is probably only because you have not heard a great variety of bass playing yet. Keep on browsing!
When Gary Karr plays up high it still sounds like a bass. Better than any cello. This dude went too far, and it's not a bass sound anymore. Too thin. I say take off that viola string and move some AIR.
@rootypootytang99 - Well, then that's what you say, isn't it? Doesn't seem to be changing his approach, nor people's love for his music. Goes to show what your opinion on someone else's art is worth, doesn't it? ;)
It's not that I don't admire your musicianship. Of course I do. I love the bass, and my comment reflects my feeling about changing the bass in order that it behaves like a completely different instrument.
What I say is accurate. It is not in the contrabass range anymore. An instrument set up this way doesn't respond as a contrabass in your hands, but more like a cello. Furthermore, this recording doesn't sound like a contrabass, and doesn't seem like a contrabass as it is performing a purely melodic function, high in pitch. I take it from your rash response that you might be quite an arrogant person. Am I right?
yes, sometimes you canplay high notes withlow frequencies instruments but they still are low frequencies instruments.... i didn't want to hurt you but i wanted you to react...
Play the bass because you love the instrument, for it's rich low tones, superb growly pizz and for the soaring high of its unparalled bowed artificial harmonics. Don't play it just for one facet of the instrument, play it for all it can do, and if five strings helps you stretch the musicality of your instrument, why not. It used to have three strings not to long ago, before it was decided that that was a bit limiting.
Ah, finally a civil reply to my comment. All I was saying, not to take anything away from Arcoluz, is that it doesn't sound like a bass anymore. I love the sound of high arco bass, in fact I've dedicated a large part of the last 35 years to making that sound. I know the difference, and that to my ear isn't the sound of bass. Though his playing is brilliant, I feel compelled to say that stringing a bass this way makes it sound like a viola, and to me is disappointing.
@zadroznyynzordaz - It may not sound like a bass *to you*, but that doesn't mean that it's the absolute truth. Sounding like something is subjective. To me, it sounds like RGF playing a bass, for what it's worth. Also, his stringing isn't really all that unusual. All the added string gives him is an extra fourth up from what he would have on any standard double bass. Trust me, he would sound like himself (and would certainly have his range) regardless of the bass he was playing.
i 've learned bass for 4 years, but it was not really good...

he has a great sound, even with no resistance and the action being so low. That bass would probably have little to no acoustic projection.

Bth are right AND wrong
Yes it almost sounds like a viola - but why use the word desapointing. Can´t you survive 20 seconds of different?
And you - why can´t you accept other people ´s preferences? Are you on some sort of Holly war agains oldfashioned people !?
As a result the music become secundary
