I read a book awhile back called American Theocracy, and one of the topics that it touched on was that all the great economic and military powers of the past all fell into decline because of religious fundamentalism, in there own society's, military overextension and economic failure. The military expansion was becuase the government didn't follow the rules outlined in the creation of their Republic. The govt got too much power and disregarded the rules designed to constrain them. Speaking as a European patriot, I really hate this aspect on here, of rejoicing because America is in trouble. They have been friends to us. I read a book awhile back called American Theocracy, and one of the topics that it touched on was that all the great economic and military powers of the past all fell into decline because of religious fundamentalism, in there own society's, military overextension and economic failure. The military expansion was becuase the government didn't follow the rules outlined in the creation of their Republic. The govt got too much power and disregarded the rules designed to constrain them. That is exactly what this country is doing right this very moment. It's not the actual wars we're fighting or the bases we have around the world, it's the elected officials corruption and disregard for the constitution. You're kinda right about the military expansion, but the reason Rome fell was way more than that. The desire to expand was a sypmtom, the root cause was that the Roman Empire was designed and built as a Republic (Gov't ruled by law). It worked so well that people got soft and said, "hey, how can we make this even better." They turned into a Democracy which is always cultivates corruption, political favors, wealth redistribution, ect. That caused their collapse. SOUND FAMILIAR ANYONE!?!?

Speaking as a European patriot, I really hate this aspect on here, of rejoicing because America is in trouble. They have been friends to us. No country is perfect, and 'absolute power corrupts absolutely', but I think the world would have been a poorer place without American influence and ideas. I think it's our turn to help out, not sneer. everybody (except a tiny clinically sick minority) has morals--theyre just diffferently defined. In fact EARLY Rome (pre-Caesars) could be said to have very similar values to our own. Not that that is necessarily a compliment. I would agree that as Rome became more imperial, its morals (even as self-defined) declined; "All power corrupts/absolute power corrupts absolutely..." doesn't just apply to individuals. Hence a parallel to our own time and society.

Most other civilizations in the region also experienced near constant warfare. Thanks to over spending by Congress and to contrived wars! Not to mention bonuses being paid out to crooks. Let us just face it that those in power are nothing but parasites and thieves. All wars are paid for by citizens. If our taxes pay for wars then we should be the deciders on whether we go to war. Fire them all. Do away with the Senate for one. Who needs them! All these high paid Congressional spenders do what for their pay? Spend, spend, spend, etc. Mostly on pork and padding pockets.
