This may be blasphemy, but Costello is cooler than the "original" Elvis. Of course, Presley was taken over by pimp Col. Parker after '57, so it was pretty much downhill from there (except for the '68 tv special with the original Sun session players, Scotty and all. That was cool. EC was cool from jumpstreet. This song is so right on the New Orleans second-line mark... wow. And the guy's show, Spectacle, is one of the best things on the tube. And his wife is amazing. I don't envy many: he's one.

It's a very clever lyric. I loved this song the first time I heard it.

The best version I've heard is the one he played on the Garrison Keilor radio show. It sounds like the audience doesn't know what to make of it to start with and by the end they're going wild.

@shf0606 The chords are not difficult, but the timing sets up the singing. I've been working on it, and you're right that it is deceptively simple. It has a very New Orleans vibe, and I love that stuff. Elvis Costello is a masterful and versatile artist.

@TheSuburbanMedia Drop tunings aren't all that weird- drop D, open G, DADGAD. Stevie Ray and Henrix were almost always down half a step. It did throw me off for a minute until I figured out where Elvis was tuned. This song is evidence that real roots music is not dead, and never will be, despite the corporate LA Nashville NY smothering of creativity. Musician will find a way. Thank God for that.

I have every Costello album and have been a huge fan since 1978. Whilst I respect this song and everything he has produced, in my mind nothing compares to his albums "This Year's Model" and "Armed Forces". They are just unbeatable. Have a listen for yourself and make your own conclusions. Those two albums are my favourite records of all time in my large collection.

This guy is a genius. His first 3 CDs (8-tracks for me at the time) blew me away so much I couldn't stop listening to them. I actually wore them out and had to buy them again, and it was worth it.
