  • @patriciaobrian Not sure why Patricia. His birth name is Declan McManus. His great-grandmother's name was Costello. His father adopted the Costello name around 1971 when he recorded "The Long and Winding Road" under the pseudonym 'Day Costello'. Sooo, that's about what I know.... lol Have a great day!

  • All he needs is a guitar and a microphone. That's it. Sure, the Attractions rule, the Imposters are marvelous, the Sugarcanes rockabilly all the livelong day...but I'm perfectly satisfied with just Elvis and his guitar.

  • Saw him in Charlotte this past Saturday night on the Revolver Tour. Best show I've ever seen. Absolutely incredible!

  • Okay people, bless your EC luvin hearts but Sulphur Louisiana is an actual place.

it is NOT very far from sugarcane I assure you.

  • I saw him perform this in Bloomington, Indiana opening for Bob Dylan!

  • @ShaneMacgowanFan93 What a show that would be!

  • simply...great!!!!

  • God that's good!

  • no puedo entender lo que dice pero es brillante

  • This may be blasphemy, but Costello is cooler than the "original" Elvis. Of course, Presley was taken over by pimp Col. Parker after '57, so it was pretty much downhill from there (except for the '68 tv special with the original Sun session players, Scotty and all. That was cool. EC was cool from jumpstreet. This song is so right on the New Orleans second-line mark... wow. And the guy's show, Spectacle, is one of the best things on the tube. And his wife is amazing. I don't envy many: he's one.

  • @slownoman

I sure like the song. But why does the guy call himself Elvis? It's a copycat name.

  • I believe costello has just proven that the name of every place in the South rhymes

  • It's a very clever lyric. I loved this song the first time I heard it.

The best version I've heard is the one he played on the Garrison Keilor radio show. It sounds like the audience doesn't know what to make of it to start with and by the end they're going wild.

  • OMG I love this man!!!!

  • this man is a don

  • He reminds me so much of arthur from king of queens :DD

  • i agree sir!!

  • J-50 baby!

  • key of C. this song is pretty easy to play but friggin hard to sing :(

  • @shf0606 The chords are not difficult, but the timing sets up the singing. I've been working on it, and you're right that it is deceptively simple. It has a very New Orleans vibe, and I love that stuff. Elvis Costello is a masterful and versatile artist.

  • I hope that one day I can be just one iota as cool as Elvis Costello.

  • i find it really weird that hes tuned himself down to D

  • @TheSuburbanMedia he has a couple of high notes to hit, so has to tune down :)

  • @TheSuburbanMedia Drop tunings aren't all that weird- drop D, open G, DADGAD. Stevie Ray and Henrix were almost always down half a step. It did throw me off for a minute until I figured out where Elvis was tuned. This song is evidence that real roots music is not dead, and never will be, despite the corporate LA Nashville NY smothering of creativity. Musician will find a way. Thank God for that.

  • love that head shake at :58.

  • kinda sounds like something you'd hear played on the street out in "Nawlins", huh?

    the man is pure genius...

  • anyone know where to find guitar tabs for this?

  • Comment removed

  • @MrRoyBuchanan are you always this arrogant? "Better quit playing..." shame on you dude. But peace, anyway :-)

  • This is ALL awesome but from :58 to 1:00 AWESOME! HAHA!

  • @dtfilament That's the part I liked. It reminded me of the looks my father used to give me when I did something wrong as a young child.

  • I have every Costello album and have been a huge fan since 1978. Whilst I respect this song and everything he has produced, in my mind nothing compares to his albums "This Year's Model" and "Armed Forces". They are just unbeatable. Have a listen for yourself and make your own conclusions. Those two albums are my favourite records of all time in my large collection.

  • First off Happy Birthday Elvis! 56 and still burgeoning with great tune.

Secondly, exactly who are the two twits who put thumbs down to this song?

Anyone is entitled to an opinion but if you don't like this tune you have NO musical taste-in fact {as my brother used to say} all of your taste is in your mouth.

  • Elvis Costello IS the greatest songwriter of his generation, bar none!

  • Elvis Costello IS the greatest songwriter of his generation, bar none!

  • I don´t like the new beard ^^

  • to think that after all these years he's still coming out with amazing songs such as this it's just mind blowing

    ELVIS COSTELLO FTW!!!!

  • Declan and his dad did the sound track to the R whites lemonade ad, "I'm a secret lemonade drinker" For those of us old enough to remember it! I wonder if he ever does it in his live shows?

  • Still THE MAN..But can't grow a decent Tache ! My mother in law has more hair on her upper lip!

  • Excellent music from the soul, from the greatest singer songwriter ever .Saw Elvis last night with 'The Sugarcanes' and they were just amazing. 3 encores and left us all wanting more form these guys. Hope he is back in Liverpool very soon................................................ :-)

  • Declan McManus at his finest! Period!

  • arghhh basturt...that GIBSOON so awesome I want it...elvis when you've finished with her..I'll have her...plis

  • I went to see him last night, loved it, his voice just sounded perfect and he was really entertaining. At one point he was using an effects pedal and it sounded appalling but everything else was great.

  • Sweet.

  • Does he have a cold or something?

  • i dont know why i cant stand elvis costello's face, accent, music, everything. he really grates on me and if i met him i'd probably involuntarily punch him in the teeth. i dont know why though :s

  • @astroboirap Is there any particular reason you hate everything about him. And if that's the case who DO you like?

  • @keonewstuff i dont know :s he just seems a bit wannabe fakey. i WANT to like him esp after he cancelled his gig in israel and stuff. but its just something. maybe the yellow glasses, maybe his teeth or voice. i cant put my finger on it. i like lou reed

  • @astroboirap I like Lou Reed a lot. Also Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, Iggy Pop, Jack White, Son House, David Byrne, Captain Beefheart, etc, but Elvis is my favorite. He's been in many a scuffle in his day, so if I were you I'd duck after slugging him.

  • @SideshowJared hmm im going to try again. why oh why does costello annoy me. i def think its his singing accent. im gonna go to one of his shows and meet him at the end. i think a punch in the face is long overdue... for him

  • @SideshowJared e? e wouldn't urt a fly...

  • @astroboirap I still adore him although he cancelled his gig here... Iv'e waited anxiously for that gig and then he went and cancelled it. I'm doing all I can to end occupation and getting harassed about it, the least he could do is come over here and support us

  • There's just something so sexy about this man...

  • @astroboirap Why?

  • If Jesus is the son of God, what the hell does that make this diamond?!

  • He had botox--look carefully, it's not the facial hair!

  • He looks so much younger with less facial hair.

  • Awesome

  • depois de trinta anos um som desses? putz, elvis costello é o cara!!!

  • Does anyone have any idea what the chords progression is?

  • @HarrisonRafteryMusic chorus is C to G7

  • @HarrisonRafteryMusic Detune the guitar a whole step (DGCFAD)..verse is C7 to F7 (Bb7 to Eb7 because of the detune)...prechorus E7 (D7) to A7 (G7) Dm to Dm/C to G...chorus F to G to C. Hope that helps...

  • @liverpooltheband Thanks a lot!!!!, I'm going to try...

  • He wore it when he performed in Vancouver in August too. Yep, it's purple.

  • I just saw him in concert last week wearing that same hat!!!

  • Is this hat really purple? I thought the color was modified for this music-video.

  • It looked just like that!

  • Sing it Elvis! So glad to have an acoustic Elvis album to enjoy :)

  • Elvis is the greatest song writer of our generation, bar none! Sir Paul McCartney even said so. Pure genius!!!

  • @declanp1 Well, he's sure 'nuff on the short list. Leonard Cohen. Joni mitchell. Paul Simon. Some guy named Zimmerman. Sir Paul demurs. His work with John stands with anything, ever. But Elvis is a truly stellar artist, great lyrically, rhythmically, vocally.... the whole nine yards, or three meters (measurements approximate).

  • @slownoman I agree with you wholeheartedly! No arguing with the other artists you mention, however, none are still putting out great songs at the rate of the real Elvis!!!

  • totally my favorite elvis :)

  • No it's not very far :)

  • Elvis Costello is the absolute man! No Question. Very classy guy, who is well respected in the industry, and continues to put out great music. Gotta Love Elvis :-)

  • @TheDude7689 i think that's because he doesn't "respect" the industry that he's still putting out great maestro music. I love his post-katrina album. Allen Toussaint rules too.

  • @TheDude7689 and handsome ;)

  • I like the tone here -- better than most YT comments sections, and I'll credit EC for that as well. I want to say something , but without overstating the case, about Elvis' career and what sets him apart from a lot of the people who have talent and become stars young. First, I think he had more talent than most of the talented, and a considerable intellect. But I think also he has respected his talent and respected music.. He didn't just use music and cash in on his talent. (make sense?)

  • Yes. Makes total sense, Ezra. Because Elvis seems to have been primarily interested in being a musician, NOT a "Rock Star". Massive intellect, boundless energy & curiosity, good priorities & and a solid work ethic...that's the stuff that keeps you working & relevant for 35 years.

  • 30 years later and his vocals are spot on. An amazing musical talent, whatever genre he is working in.

  • "But in Worcester, Massachusetts they love my sauce!"

Although, EC has played my adopted hometown of Worcester a few times over the years (including last year with Bob Dylan) I know the lyric stems from "Worcestershire" and as device for him to use the "sauce" double-entendre.

  • will someone please send me the chords

  • nm figured it out c(g) F(c) C E am F G F G

  • But Tuning is 2 Tones lower.

    C=Bb

    G=F

    and so on.

  • fucking awesome

  • So Classy. So professional. Very tasty dynamics. I love this new album.

  • Decent song, though the moustache makes him look alot older than he is.

  • this one, has really grown on me, I wasn't sure about his new album, but no I love this one.

  • Hahaha... 0:52

  • then whats the point on commenting on the video asshole. And besides Chuck Berry is the king of rock and roll

  • I believe your Elvis died on the crapper with his pants around his ankles, his heart blown out by years of pill popping? Meanwhile THIS Elvis is still going strong, still kickin ass...

  • Comment removed

  • Elvis presley stole alot of his riffs and songs from a man named muddy waters... who was so much better then that hack ever was. costello on the other hand, fantastic!

  • His last three albums are just stellar. Delivery Man, Momofuku and now this one....he just embodies the idea that being a musician is a vocation and if you are lucky enough to make a living doing it you should be as professional and as creative as possible.

  • I totally agree. How many artists are putting out some of their best work in their mid 50s? Elvis is the best.

  • Great stuff. Effortless guitar.

And he looks like Captain Mainwairing.

  • Hey, Shut the F**ck up, he's a better musician than you could ever dream of being !!

  • love the music very good video..

  • His mustache is not at all like Dylan's.

  • its nice to hear elvis getting a little ornery again.

  • so trim in his tailored black suit - and doesn't he look so nice

  • Sweet tune! I saw it live when he played with Bob Dylan in Bloomington, IN last year.

  • Fell in love with this song first time I heard it on 'Spectacle'

  • gR888T AS ALWAYS NOMATTER WHAT.......

  • first time hearing this guy and im feeling it !:D

  • This guy is a genius. His first 3 CDs (8-tracks for me at the time) blew me away so much I couldn't stop listening to them. I actually wore them out and had to buy them again, and it was worth it.

I have since bought them yet again on CD (along with his others) and still love them.

  • "hello baby i'm... pleased to meet you"

    such an EC line break.

  • einfach genial

  • finally a new cd!
