@LowleyUK William does Drums, Vocals, Piano, Violin, Guitar, Bass, Banjo, Synthesiser, and... well the tin whistle. And it's never specified 'who' writes the songs. Just because he's the singer, doesn't mean he wrote the lyrics, in fact all credit is given to 'Coldplay' not Chris Martin, unlike bands like U2 who give credit to Bono and Edge.

Yes will is a talented muscian but composing good songs is harder than playing instruments for sure. Also the lyrics are almost always by Chris.
