I absolutely hated going to "social skills" groups growing up. The ones I've been a part of where mainly interested in "normalizing" the child and making them into "perfectly acceptable" citizens. Most of them are repetitious, discussion type groups. They don't show much interest in listening to the teen, empathizing with them and understanding what they are going through. They overly stimulate and push them into social situations where they feel uncomfortable.
@dwarrren9 let me add that I know that not all groups are like that. The particular "group" I was a part of was behavioral therapy based. I really got tired of role playing situations where many Aspies refuse to address their character flaws like inappropriate language, sarcasm, blatant rudeness or poor personal hygiene. They tell me I need to give my mind an "overhaul" and be more "social", but the others have obvious flaws they most certainly need help addressing.
Wrong Planet, you sold out to autism speaks.

I love the Wrong Planet, but I do not like Autism Speaks. Wish TWP would cut their ties with AS.
