Intel is very, very expensive (if you compare it to AMD processors), but Intel processors survive these tasks. Amd is cheaper and are build for normal use. So Amd processors would almost never survive these kind of tasks. Btw: I have an Intel processor, but if i build a new pc, I chose Amd. Because they have 1 socket: Am3. Every Amd processor fits on it. If you have Intel, you have to buy a new motherboard and a new processor. :(

Those AMD CPUs were too old compared to the P4 on the video. If they used an AthlonXP 2000 instead of that Athlon 1400+, then result would be very different. I witnessed my brother's Athlon64 3500's behavior whenever its fan failed: whole system immediately shut down. End result: CPU always survived. Modern AMD boards have robust BIOS that monitors temp and whenever temp goes beyond certain threshold, fan increases speed, and if fan fails, BIOS shuts down whole sys and ensures CPU survival.

I'm as big an AMD fan as anybody, but it's just silly the way some people get so defensive about this issue. There's no shame in admitting that the P3/P4 generally handle overheating better than these Athlons. I still like the Athlon - but I'm not brainwashed enough to claim that it's universally superior.

first of all this is not removing only the fan...this is removing the cooling system(heatsink and fan) this would happen to any electonic that needs a cooling system. this wont happen on boards that have shutdown temps at motherboard level which would save the cpu. Also a primary reason Intel wins is because they have a larger core heatsink built in, about 6 times larger then that of AMD.

And outdated a bit. I had problems with Palomino core Athlon 2000+ in newly aquired used motherboard - it wont boot up at 133mhz FSB. It turned out to be lame HSF - but CPU hadn't fried itself - motherboard was detecting overheating and was immadiately shutting down system. After replacing heatsink with something with better performance everything runs ok. I think all athlon motherboards have this feature for ages.
