lol. maybe its time i start traing my dog. My mom is way to impatient and has a hard time keeping it positive, but i can handle it. one of the problems is, is that my dogs get WAY to excited after the first treat excited for more, maybe i train them to be patient before anything esle, like only giving them one when they calm down? :)
@sns4e It took about two weeks if I remember correctly. I broke it down into small steps he could figure out. First I got him to touch the rope hanging on the door handle. I would give him treats and keep it real positive. If I say "No" when he doesn't do what I want, that just doesn't work, he loses interest fast. Gotta keep it positive and keep the treats coming on a regular basis. For treats, I used little ground beef meatballs my wife cooked for him (lean beef, no seasoning)
I like how all these people talk shit on English mastiffs. I love mine. She is the greatest dog I've ever met and dumb!? Haha my mastiff is EXTREMELY smart. Any dog can be smart. I guess you idiots just have no clue what it means to "Train" a dog. And this video is awesome by the way. Beautiful dog
I can leave a big ass steak on the table and he will stand there and look at it until he goes nuts.. but he will not dare to touch it.. there will be a puddle of drool on the floor but otherwise.. Its all about working with them everyday and rewarding them
Its sad how some of you think your mastiff is dumb.. You have to work with your dog every day.. take the dog to classes.. especially if you want to even walk the dog down the street without him dragging your ass behind him.. I have a 6 year old niece that can walk my 225 lb dog down the street with no problem.. if she drops the leash he stops and sits then waits for her to pick it up again.. I can leave dinner on the able or kitchen counter unattended with out him snatching it..
Great video! Thanks for sharing it with everyone - so fun to watch. My mastiff can retrieve things from the fridge, too, but then he grabs whatever he can find for himself! :)
wow, regarding how stubborn english mastiffs are thats an awsome job youve done there! Got one myself, its impossible to teach him stuff though. He's not stupid, just damn stubborn! If he doesnt want to come when you call him, he just sits down and looks at me from a distance. "Uhm... Should i go? ...nah.. or.. nah... think i'll just chill right here..."
ya i hve a 2 yr old girl english mastiff and she gets any type of drinking bottle (water, soda watever) and takes the lid off it..lol she learned it frm my grandmas pitbull.
@esl21 Yeah, classic for animals since they don't have a developed frontal lobe. They are not good at focusing on more than one thing at a time. Actually, I didn't teach him to put the bottle down, that was his idea. I think he didn't like it banging into the door when he closed it. Have you read "Animals in Translation" by Temple Grandin? It's pretty cool. Temple Grandin is autistic which is a undeveloped frontal lobe of the brain, helps her understand animals.
@bluegama500 My mastiff is actually quite smart, he knew my mother was in danger last winter after she fell outdoors, sat by her and barked until help arrived. But if he doenst want to go outdoors, he wont go outdoors unless you drag him (mines over 220 pounds). Or give him food. He looks like he's won the nobel peace prize each time i take some dog food in my hand and throw it outdoors to make him do what i want. Looks like his saying "What .. for me? Wow what and honor! Thats just too much!"
@bluegama500 Well the EM does look mildly retarded but thats kinda what i think is so cute with them too. Dont unerestimate them though! Behind theyre silly loooks lurks a slow but effective brain. The vid here speaks for itself! Also a EM has other qualities. Burglars wont break in a house owned by a english mastiff, they seldom barks and theyre far from hyperactive so theyre chill to be around.
"not hyperactive" more like lazy lol. They were bred to just lay at the gate of the kingdom and challenge anything that came by whether it was people or animals. The EM was a much larger, stronger, wilder and faster dog that it is today. Todays EM is just slow and clumsy lol.
What I like about them is they are nice friendly giants though.
@bluegama500 LARGER? I think the current mastiff is about as large and strong as it can be as a dog. I talked to a vet and she said my dog is border-to-sickly large considering a dog shouldnt be too large since its cardivascular system etc has its limits and thats why huge dogs like EM often doesnt get that old. But youre probably right about faster and wilder, remember, theyre an ancient fighting breed and almost got extinct after bull and lion baiting was banned in the UK (which is good).
@androgenix Yes but in the ancient days the EM would have been faster, stronger and more aggressive due to selective breeding and natural selection.
And even if they were the same size as they are today, the ancient EM was still faster, wilder and a better fighter. Todays EM maybe be big but can't fight due to its slow speed. Todays EM could not fight off wild animals, such a Wolves, its just too slow.
@bluegama500 I doubt it had any significant physical advantage over modern EM, but surely they were more aggressive Figting dogs in general were larger eralyer. Pitbulls are bred for dogfighting, dogs are smaller than humans, predators pray on larger game because size comes at the expense of speed, but against larger games like leopards and hyenas, the south africans bred the boerboel which is much larger than a pit. I guess for a muscle dog against humans, boerboel or ovcharka is the ultimate.
@androgenix Yes your right, pit bulls are overrated. They are too small and lack size and strength when fighting against animals and people.
However, the EM was much different. What, you think a modern EM can fight off predators, especially wolves? It won't stand a chance. I've even seen pit bulls beat large EM's and bullmastiffs whiteout even getting bitten. Modern EM's are just too slow and sluggish, I've seen them in attack training.
@bluegama500 still though, if you break into my house, my english mastiff WILL have you for lunch. Its one of the worlds top guard dogs, but not as aggressive and hostile as a boerboel or a ovcharka. A pitbull regarded as so "dangerous" is generally not larger than you can kick it away, try that against a boerboel or ovcharka at 2x its size. Im glad the mastiff is more easy going today, its totally cool with kids etc and i can be sure i dont get thrown in jail for it attacking someone at random
Of course the ancient EM was faster, stronger, smarter, more protective and probably even larger. The ancient EM was just superior in just about every way.
Modern EM's are no longer bred to be physically robust and healthy. There is no evolutionary pressure on modern EM's. For example, take a look at LGD breeds, they are much healthier, smarter, faster and more protective than mastiffs that have no evolutionary pressure. EM's can't fight.
And boerboels can't kill Leopards or Hyenas, thats a myth. They scare away leopards and Hyneas, and only kill them in groups. Its amazing how stupid people can be to actually believe this rubbish.
No dog can ever kill a Leopard or Hyena by itself. All dogs at least needs a few other dogs helping them. A Hyena or Leopard can kill any dog in seconds.
Whats next, Men can kill Lions with their bare hands?
@bluegama500 I beg to differ, my dog is highly intelligent, but my dog gets training. Nobody is smart without training. Not matter the potential, how you treat your dog makes a difference. I speak to my dog in complete sentences, not babytalk or caveman language. I'm sure he's smarter because of the way I interact with him.
My mastiff waits until you leave the kitchen then will take food off the kitchen table and then proceed to hide on the sun porch and eat. He is not allowed in the kitchen while we are eating. We love to hide and watch him do this.
You guys, training a dog isn't hard. The most easy way to train a dog is to do it when their a pup. It takes plenty of time and work, you can't just teach it a few times and think it will remember. It takes plenty of patients and hard work. Any dog can be trained to do just about everything if your willing to take the time and do it.
there isn't a medical shot in this world that can boost your immune system higher than owning an animal that slobbers that much. Im being serious. Plz, expose your children around animals because they'll help their immune system in the long run. That's my PSA. Enjoy.
Hahaha...how'd you teach him to do that? I have five english mastiffs!! They're young still, but I would love to teach them to do that. Good job!! Take care.
One step at a time. Get him to pull on the rope, then get him to touch the bottle with his nose, then get him pull the bottle out, then close the door. Stay positive always, give mega-praise when he does any little thing right. No negative feedback, he loses interest in training if I ever got to negative, with too many "No, you're not doing it right". I had tiny little pieces of hamburger (no seasoning) on the shelf, so whenever I was training him and the door opened I got him a treat.
My mastiff opens the freezer to get ice cream.... But too bad she won't shut the door when she is done!!

Back in the medieval times the EM was not probably smarter too. It was just a much more superior dog back then, in just about every way.
Evolutionary pressure has been taken away from this gentle giant. If you ask me, I think they should breed the mastiff back to its ancient self.

Stay positive always, give mega-praise when he does any little thing right. No negative feedback, he loses interest in training if I ever got to negative, with too many "No, you're not doing it right".
