@dflartist Jack Haley begged Diane to present but she turned him down flat. He never forgot it. I think Haley had lined up Faye to present that night but she took ill and had to be replaced. In all Diane has participated only a handful of times as a presenter. And only three times (that I recall) opened an envelope. And always with other people.

@dcasey77 A bit late for a reply, but I believe there are two reasons De Niro didn't get that Oscar: 1: The Deer Hunter was nominated in 10 of the 12 categories it could possibly be nominated for and won 5 of them. Maybe they didn't want to flood it even more. 2: De Niro's acting in the last moment of the last scene with Christopher Walken was criticised by many as over the top. It didn't take me out of the movie, but watching the scene separately, I've got to admit the critics do have a point.

I was so happy when Jon Voight won for his performance in 'Coming Home'! I was absolutely thrilled when they called his name.

Not to take anything away from the other actors, because they were great too--that's how it usually is with fellow nominees.

But what stood out for me with Jon's performance, was that it was so very human and so very passionate regarding a veteran dealing with the aftermath of the war.

It's the kind of performance and story that you won't soon be seeing again.
