I'm probably being a complete moron, but I don't understand how he realises Stella is his daughter? Is it just that he recognises the mother from the picture? But if that were it then how is the viewer meant to know what's going on, because we've never seen the mother before? Ahhhh this is really frustrating me!!!

@TheMelvynator Earlier in the movie O'hara visits her old girlfriend's place.. so the address probably fits..and the pre-war timeline. The name is also a clue - Stella Maris is how O'hara knows her so the mother named her after her nickname.

It says when Alan's Character appears in the movie that he is searching for the woman he loved and the child she was pregnent with before when he lift for the war. The woman ran off to America when he never returned and left the child alone. Thats when the child's Aunt and Uncle started raising her. Then when Alan's character was called back for a play he was also there searching for her and their child, but he thought the kid would be a boy, but he finds out the truth about her and her mother.

This may be my single favorite Rickman moment, as far as acting, beginning around 4:15. His dawning realization is amazing, and his reaction to the picture . . . all without a word. Nobody does it like Alan Rickman! The first time I saw this movie, I was screaming at the screen here, in complete agony for O'Hara . . .

butterfly, in part 9 she turned the picture because she had just lost her virginity to O Hara and felt ashamed so she didn't want to look at her mother's picture... that's also why in her fake phone call to her mother in the same part, she hung up before speaking.
