This was the first LP I ever, ever bought. Remember it like it was yesterday, it was on 8/8/62 in San Fernando, CA at Bob's record store. It cost me $3.98 and with tax $4.14 (tax in CA was 4% in 1962). I was 13 years old. Still have it of course. There is no way anybody can't stay still listening to this classic. Oh, and Rover TCB, you uploaded this song on my birthday, Jan, 29th. Ernie never really made it big as a singer but oh what a talent when you consider the great songs he wrote.
It took a while to find this one. My favorite from '62. I was 8yrs. old, loved the song. Played it on my little player so ;many times I got spanked. I still have a limp from the spanking. (just kidding). This was truly my first rock-n-roll song. It kicks ass!
It's literally impossible not to move your body around when this is playing. What a great record. If this doesn't get you moving, you're beyond help. A truly joyful groove.
He was a great writer, but for those who think he didn't get a fair shake, he actually was a rather weak vocalist! Even in this record he only sings a few lines... when he was offered a contract with Seville, his words were to the effect of "am I supposed to sing?" but as we can see, he was able to overcome his talent deficit by writing and producing a hit anyway!
My dad bought this record just days after he graduated from high school in 1962. About 12 years later, when I was 3, I started listening to my parents' old 45s, having no clue what the hell they even were, and this one captured my fancy from first listen. Ernie took this song to No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100; it's great that he did get to have one big hit without being in the shadows as 'only' the composer.
Ernie gets no credit for his talent - this was the man who wrote "Runaround Sue" (to which he alludes in the verse). He derserved better fame than this single, obscure solo hit.
There is nothing better than listening to this on the "reverb" setting of an early 60's GM convertible. Cheers, Ernie!
can you post Mary Jane by Ernie. I once had the record on Seville label. Don't know if it was considered a flip side because it never charted on Billboard Hot 100.
fuck you
