Used to love this song but then one day I remembered the sesame street theme song music and now the chorus sounds hella annoying. Sounds almost identical.
@sfsf96 When Rivers was in Harvard, a Japanese girl sent him a letter, he was lonely and it cheered him up ("I need help, and you're way across the sea").
c: "I've got your letter, you've got my song." I guess he's just wondering what caused her to write the letter and is interested in who she is.
@sfsf96 This is easy. Just think = the guy in america asked his mom to go to japan to meet the 18-yrd-old-girl, but his mother said no... and then the girl left him because she found out she was wasting her time dating a guy across the sea. and then the boy blames his mother saying *its all your fault, moma... all your falt*. thats what i think. what do u think?
Soundtrack to a past. I forget you guys can listen to this too. Ha I forget Weezer isn't family... I love Rivers Cuomo and the gang and they need not do anything more to prove their genius. =W=
... this is a really pretty song, but... im having trouble figuring out the meaning... is he singing about a fangirl, and... eh, its just all a bit creepy to me lol. me loves weezer though!!!!!
@arcademachines Yeah something about how he was lonely in Harvard, and some fan from Japan wrote to him and told him all about herself. Then he realised that he'd never meet her, and he'd fallen in love with her because of her letter? It's all a bit weird, he said something about it in an interview.
@1992Ignorance Especially the line 'I wonder how you touch yourself,' especially when it follows the line 'I wonder what clothes you wear to school' :/
@TheAdvilMonkey The creepiness is what makes it beyond marvelous. It perfectly captures the longing nature of wanting to find someone to be intimate with and the crazy desperation people go through to achieve that. It just wouldn't be the same song without lines like "I wonder how you touch yourself", it'd be a diluted piece of emotion with a pretty arrangement. And that's a big statement, because to me, this is the best song that Rivers has ever penned, that creepiness is key.
Then.. When no one likes them. Their gonna make a new album and it will be better then pinkerton and blue, and everyone will be like. Rivers Cuomo is a genius. A Real Genius
I wonder if these lyrics would be accepted in todays obssesively politically correct society? What am I chatting, everyone hated this album when it came out. bastards.
@lidrvic89 Considering some of the repugnant shit you hear on the radio (which even I'm frankly surprised they get away with since I'd consider myself pretty liberal with lyrics), this would probably be considered pretty tame.
It's hard to decide, but Pinkerton seems to never get old....It may in fact be weezer's best album ever. I remember hearing it for the first time, and I didn't know quite what to think...there was something about it that kept me putting back in the cd player over and over again.
@MrJesawyer No it doesn't... It's about how pathetic Rivers life was, and specifically how he got sexual satisfaction from a letter that a girl in Japan wrote to him...
@Jackimole i never suggested otherwise. my comment was referring to your attitude toward the writer of the song and his experience. what may be considered pathetic by one, is seen as a thing of beauty others.
@livingthelife194 He does like Weezer you moron. Ive seen him on other videos. He is pointing out what the meaning of the song is. Rivers himself said it was about his pathetic life and about him getting a sexual kick out of recieving a letter from japan.
@dubified89 I understand that but that's what the song is about. Rivers has said it on many occasions. The emotion is probably the reason why pnkerton in my opinion is their best album.
@Useless2112 LMAO...I didn't write that comment...I wouldn't write anything that rude....but my HUSBAND would!! I guess you attempted to "google"...I would bet on my husband being correct...he has a genious IQ. Thankyou for standing up for me honey...Im not a Weezer fan. You have a great day "useless"
btw, rivers said in a recent interview that he's planning blue/pinkerton tour where they play the entirety of blue album in one night and the entirety of pinkerton the next night in the city!
i have a video about this with more details! it's gonnna be sickkkkk! xoxo
The problem with Raditude is that it's clearly made simply and obviously to be marketed. It's not art. It's regurgitated pop rock music with zero soul or intuition. Pinkerton had emotion, passion, and vigor (as did Blue to some extent). THAT'S what sets it apart from other Weezer albums, and of course he didn't have to 're-write' Pinkerton over and over, but he could have kept making genuine, honest music. "Beverly Hills"? Honest? Get real, he couldn't pen a quality tune to save his life now.
@bamlaflamme well, as long Raditude or any of the other records aren't meant to be honest and meaningfull, i don't mind, there's still some nice songs and stuff like run over by a truck is genius.
@bamlaflamme Dude from what i have heard their new album is beast, and i really think rivers is trying to return to their roots, one bad album is not the end of a carreer.
Pinkerton is great. People need to stop hoping for Rivers to write another Pinkerton though. He's a different person now. He writes what he feels. He doesn't feel this way anymore.
That said, I still love Weezer. Even the new stuff.
people give "new" weezer shit. Hey, if people didn't like Pinkerton style music when it first came out, they tried a formula that got them hits. This is Rivers life in these songs which is great. But now he doesn't care and just wants to have fun. I like Raditiude for what it is. Short, catchy riff, fun songs. Pinkerton and Blue will always be my favorite, but i still think there new stuff is fun. I like it when weezer does different things. I'd get bored if Pinkerton was the only sound made.
@spy4400 I think that the "Blue Album" isn't just their best cd, but one of the greatest cd's of all time. Yet, I can remember calling the cd store every day asking if Pinkerton had come out yet. Most highly anticipated cd release for me, and, at first, I was disappointed. But I came to love this cd eventually, It's an amazing disc, and I think it shows Weezer's range better than any of their other stuff. This song proves it. Deep, deep stuff. Plus, this is with the original band.
@bawhite125 i completely agree every song on blue is a masterpiece there are some songs on pinkerton that just drag the album down don't get me wrong there both great but blue is so much better to me
@Useless2112 : Your screen-name is fitting, you are useless. How is someone a pedophile when they're speaking of someone who is 18 years old? This song was written in 1996, Rivers was 25 years old singing in reference to an 18 year old girl, how does that make him a pedophile? I'll give you a hint, it doesn't. P.S. Before you write something so dumb, at least spell your insult correctly; "paedophile" and "didst"...man you're a moron.
@MySoundGarden Your name is fitting, you're a vegetable.
A grown man having sexual fantasies about a schoolgirl is creepy. Adding a caveat that she's 18 years old leads me to the conclusion that he is fully aware that it is creepy, and it doesn't detract from the fact that he's singing about having sexual fantasies about a schoolgirl. I don't *actually* believe Rivers Cuomo is a paedophile. Nonetheless, I do think he's creepy.
It's another way of rephrasing the sentiment in the "it's all your fault, mama" section. Think about the character and values that we associate with Monks and then think about how he blames his mother (an older woman) for making him a nice, meek (emasculated) nice guy who can't go get what he wants.
@MySoundGarden P.S. I spelt both words correctly. In Latin, "paedo-" means "child" and "pedo-" basically means "walking". Therefore a "paedophile" is someone who is sexually attracted to children (like Rivers Cuomo roflroflrofl) while a "pedophile" is the retarded American perversion of the actual word. "Didst" is an archaic singular past-tense version of the word "do". I can't be held responsible for your being too dumb to learn the English language.
seriously everyone? weezer is one of the most original sounds in music. every album sounds different...why would anyone want to listen to the same music all the time? Raditude is somewhat reminiscent of The Cars - and I love it! Not a big fan of the Lil Wayne track, but hey, its a different sound and its a fun change of pace. I will say that Pinkerton is one of my favorite albums, mostly because of Matt Sharp's contributions on the album
5* Not just for the Song, For Pinkerton in Generall...
R.I.P. Old Weezer; If you want to record techno albums with Lil Wayne instead of writing songs like this, that is your choice, Just as it is mine not to listen.
Well the world pretty much shit in Weezer's face when this album came out. Talked about how much it sucked. Not to mention Pinkerton and the feelings and mindset that went into making it cannot be replicated endlessly.
When I said this album, I meant Pinkerton. What I'm saying is that Weezer's effort on this album was snubbed and insulted, and thus they probably weren't eager to make another like it.
People saying that more albums should be like this and the Blue Album are being a little naive. The circumstances and mentality it took to create those two albums isn't a cookie-cutter formula Rivers and Weezer can do over and over again.
@jesusdapnk1 you're kidding me. Weezer is a lot worse now. I love the old sound of this band. When Mikey left, this band went downhill. Even after Pinkerton, this band started going supar mainstream
Out of all the Weezer songs, this one is my favorite. The drums are so boomy and organic. I think people relate to this album more than any recent albums because everything Weezer records now is digital. The Blue Album and Pinkerton were recorded to 2" analog tape compared to other albums. The performances are real in these recordings, and analog is difficult to edit unlike protools now.
@SuperWeezerFan They honestly should. Pinkerton is Weezer's best album. You have to remember though, they were comparing it to Blue Album. Blue Album and Pinkerton were two completely different times in River's life. Critic's aren't ready for change. They need more Aguilera and Lady Gaga remix album's to jam down their listening hole and make their mind's speak utter bullshit about them that record companies pay these people to say.
imagine if this album was well received and praised instead of bashed when it came out, then rivers would of have kept making music like this! what if eh?
He did! there's a plethora of weezer b-sides(i made a playlist of them i think it might be public on my profile). Google "songs from the black hole", the album that Pinkerton would have been.
Best album of the 90's.

Useless2112 1 year ago
@Useless2112 it's not that creepy if she's just a few years under. A pedophile is someone who likes kids
dubified89 1 year ago
@dubified89 the part in the middle is weird though, about being a monk for older women?
dubified89 1 year ago
@dubified89

@MySoundGarden try learning english english, it'll make you look like less of an arse(that means ass) when you try to correct spelling.

sgtbarone 1 year ago
seriously everyone? weezer is one of the most original sounds in music. every album sounds different...why would anyone want to listen to the same music all the time? Raditude is somewhat reminiscent of The Cars - and I love it! Not a big fan of the Lil Wayne track, but hey, its a different sound and its a fun change of pace. I will say that Pinkerton is one of my favorite albums, mostly because of Matt Sharp's contributions on the album

you guys, you love a band once, you love them always.
i don't neccessarily like their newest album, "Raditude", but i still LOVE the band, regardless.
you know them, they like to experiment with their sound. i mean, they've been around since fucking 1992. give them a break.
we can just hope that they'll go back to their pinkerton sound eventually, because this shit is amazing. <3

@TheTerrorUforgot The world shit in Weezer's face when Pinkerton came out too. Look at the album now.
SuperWeezerFan 1 year ago
When I said this album, I meant Pinkerton. What I'm saying is that Weezer's effort on this album was snubbed and insulted, and thus they probably weren't eager to make another like it.
People saying that more albums should be like this and the Blue Album are being a little naive. The circumstances and mentality it took to create those two albums isn't a cookie-cutter formula Rivers and Weezer can do over and over again.

@TheTerrorUforgot Oh sorry i didnt understand. I agree.

@SuperWeezerFan Those critics should be ashamed of themselves.

@SuperWeezerFan what do you mean? if they said it was bad then they are dumb asses regardless haha
renicanfly 1 year ago
@SuperWeezerFan They honestly should. Pinkerton is Weezer's best album. You have to remember though, they were comparing it to Blue Album. Blue Album and Pinkerton were two completely different times in River's life. Critic's aren't ready for change. They need more Aguilera and Lady Gaga remix album's to jam down their listening hole and make their mind's speak utter bullshit about them that record companies pay these people to say.
