england's rigging of this cup final is much deeper than these final two goals in the final. first you have to consider the english refs that allowed both portugal and hungary to play unfairly rough against brazil, specifically to pele taking him out of the portugal match and what would be the rest of the tournament no matter how far they went. so first of all if brazil makes it past group stages, they would have met england in the semis and more than likely beat them handidly with pele.

I did not realise that the fourth goal was so late! I am glad it happened, believing in fair play it would have been terrible to have won by a goal that clearly was not a goal. So that is the way it goes. We were knocked out in 1986 through a stumpy cheat playing for a team that had bought its way into the final in 1978. So at least we should play fair!

In 1978 there was a different system. 16 teams, 4 leagues then 2 leagues and the winners went to the final.

Argentina needed to beat Peru by 5 goals to win the league, if not Brazil was through to the final. Argentina paid USD50m to Peru, half in cash, half in grain, to throw the game.
