Methane Releases from Arctic Shelf May Be Much Larger and Faster Than Anticipated

NSF - March 4, 2010.

Research results, published in the March 5 edition of the journal Science, show that the permafrost under the East Siberian Arctic Shelf, long thought to be an impermeable barrier sealing in methane, is perforated and is starting to leak large amounts of methane into the atmosphere. Release of even a fraction of the methane stored in the shelf could trigger abrupt climate warming.

Dissolved CO2 makes acid.

By 2100, at current rates of increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide, average ocean pH will drop 0.3 - 0.4 and be @ 7.8 with an increase in acidic H+ ion concentration of 150-200%.

That will cause a 50% DECREASE of ocean carbonate ions (CO3).

Carbonate ions are needed for growth by plankton & corals at the base of the ocean's food chain.

@SteveWrathall There are many causes of global temperature change. GHG, Solar Irradiance, Volcanoes, El Nino & ocean circulation, and most important, changes in Earth's orbit & axis perturbations.

ONLY GHG has had any major effect in the last 35 years. Global temps. have spiked +0.55C with NO INCREASE in solar irradiance. In fact, TSI is at a 35 year low.

BTW, El Nino events have also strengthened 60% in the last 50 years due to global warming. Why???

New MIT projections came out last year in MAY. With business as usual, without any change, CO2 is going up from 390 to 600ppm or more by 2100.

MIT predicts that will push temps. up 3.5-5.2C (6.3-9.8F)

That could well be enough to start an uncontrolled release of methane from the arctic which would double or triple GHG's again.

Actually 1998 was the hottest it's been in "recorded history". Since then there's been no warming despite a 6% rise in CO2. And accurate global "recore history" only goes back to 1979 with satellites, or at a stretch the 19th century-but that has huge areas of no data. Both the Medieval and Roman periods were warmer than now. Enjoy your sunbathe.

How does one GRL article disprove a flood suggesting otherwise? The post-1998 ceasing of CH4 rise is undisputed. This despite warmer-than average Arctic sunmmers. This is one of the key +ve feedbacks on which the catastrophists rely.

As for Hg, one company's criminal act does not equate to "flooding the oceans". The catastrophists are predicting GLOBAL disaster. You cannot do that simply by cherry-picking local environmental problems, some 40 yeatrs out-of-date.
