I would say, the thing that helps me the most is: when I draw, to get proportions right it´s very helpful to think about the picture as an picture full of dark and light places, lol. Don´t know if that makes sense, but when I don´t look at it as it is a person, just shadows, it´s easier to just "copy" what I see in front of me... can´t explain it better, sorry!
