  • "emotional heavy lifting"... I loved that one! :)

    hat off!

  • Heheh, he got a little sarcastic when the interviewer misread the name of the record label

  • When you hear someone like Tony play the drums, you hear all the possibilities that great discipline and awareness can open. Expressive drummers like Tony and Jack Dejohnette open our minds to the limitless.

  • My god,I sooo miss hearing this guy play.tony was a master of his craft.Miss him so much..but his music live on in our hearts

  • Great musician. Better human being.

  • what's the tune playing in the background in the first few minutes of the video?

  • @TheSticksLegend The interviewer is playing Tony's latest CD "Wilderness" in the background.

  • haha what the fuck are they doing having tea?

  • @seerskater lol

  • Trust me I lived through that era and Tony & Jimi played a lot live a lot up and around the New York area along with with a of great jazz musicans, but on the whole a lot people didn't want to hear Jimi playing jazz. That was a shame they played some bold shit.

  • He says whats playin in the interview

    Wilderness Album.

  • wonder what tune is playing in the backgound at 9:40-13:53? sounds good

  • Amazing artist. I love Tony's style of playing. Man; and who would have known that 2yrs later he would be in Heaven. RIP Mr. Williams. We miss you sir.

  • Er... Tony played with Coltrane and Hendrix? First I'm hearing of that.

  • @DarkeningSkies1

i knew about the hendrix collaboration, but not of the coltrane.

  • @buysometrysome Perhaps at live gigs? I have researched this era and genre of music pretty well, and never heard of Tony drumming with either. There are unreleased Hendrix studio sessions with Larry Young & John McLaughlin (Tony's partners in Lifetime), but the drummer on those was Buddy Miles. Hmmmm.....

  • Terrible interview, but precious to have footage of Mr. Williams at all, filmed two years before his untimely death. Of all the jazz drummers who ever lived, for me his death was the most unexpected and tragic, as creatively he was soooo young, and never would have stopped taking risks... (as Arcana suggests) R.I.P.

  • @DarkeningSkies1 great CD...Arcana....." Last Wave " i think its called ..... ironic

  • @fess04 There were two Arcana albums, actually. "The Last Wave" was the first, a trio record with Bill Laswell on bass and Derek Bailey on guitar, and the one Tony was recording when he passed, "Arc Of The Testimony"- it featured Pharoah Sanders on sax, Graham Haynes on cornet and Buckethead on guitar- it is a little more 'ambient' than "Last Wave", but still pretty out there. Both superb sessions...

  • @DarkeningSkies1 yup......and the "The Last Wave" is unreleased material.....you must get a copy....if you like can send you the tracks.....SICKNESS!!!!!!!! : )

  • @fess04 Oh, I know- they are fantastic. I have had 'em on CD for over a decade and still play 'em every now and again- "Last Wave" is indeed pretty vicious stuff, but with Bailey and Laswell onboard I expected nothing less. Thanks for the offer! ;)

  • bad interview

  • Interviewers are like sports announcers who have never played the game, frustrated twats

  • I thought the guy did a good job

  • @underyourskindvd I think you should talk less in your interviews. No one likes to hear a good song interrupted. Leave your hangups at the door.

  • god!!!

  • Tony stays Focused and relaxed w/ these referances which really was not studied much.-on the Innterviewers part / There are a Rare Few Drummers in this World .the rest are hobbyists...

  • For interviewers, the worst thing is to become confused that you are somehow a peer of those you're interviewing- in this case one of the singular musicians in history.

If only there were such an interview with Larry Young. I saw Williams & Young just the two of them at Mandrakes in Berkeley about 1970, and it was the most intense chemistry I've ever seen- like a train going by an inch from your nose, otherworldly.

I'm so grateful to live in their time.

  • @jayscott49 god damn thats ill! that era tony was outta his mind, seein that music live woulda blew my mind!

  • This interviewer is a twit.

  • @Samsgarden I agree. They like making people small, so they can feel big.

  • @Samsgarden : r u a freekin' superiority prik????...shut the fuck up..what would you know about interviewing technique.????
