relax i too have the same problem with this. this system software called version 4.01 is a original software u can't overwrite it jus by installing the custom firmware. if u like to crack the psp to a custom firmware u have to go to your nearest game shop they'll it for u. u can't do this on your own cause it's super hard to crack.

you need a psp with CFW already installed otherwise you cannot make a proper pandora battery, otherwise you can take apart the battery and cut a few pins, msg me for details

well your gonna have to take apart your battery first, i reccomend getting a small razor blade (not too large) and slighty SLIGHTLY score the sides until the top comes off like a lid, don't score too deep as it could very well cathc on fire or explode, oh and make sure you have a spare battery or that one you just modded will become completely useless for "normal" use, then when you get it open gently pull open the circuit board (the green microchip thingy for n00bs lol jks)

then locate the chip at the very top of your cicuit board, and it should say IC04 on it otherwise your battery is one of those patched and cannot be turned into a pandora battery, if it does, carefully cut the pins in front of the chip linking the chip with the circuit board and then your finished, tape it back together and yea take your MMS out and your battery too, then insert the mem stick and hold the 'L' trigger while putting in the pandora battery and the service mode screen should come up

Well, you certainly can't get custom firmware without downgrading, unless someone develops a .bin file which does just that, and will run from the PSP using the MOHH exploit.

Currently, there is no way to downgrade OFW 5.50, other than the pandora method.

you need pandora + mms for cfw but there other ways such as soft mod or running hen to install cfw, but overall you need cfw to install a new version of cfw..

of course, if you want to install a custom firmware, you need to downgrade your PSP to version 1.50 and upgrade it with a custom firmware lower than 4.01, like 3.71-M33 and then follow this video, otherwise the update won't start.
