@7vitaman - I'm with you in celebrating "Amazing Grace". Just one little point: "Amazing Grace" had been a favorite in many churches for many generations before Judy Collins' wonderful recording. Billy Graham meetings had featured it for decades. I remember singing it often in Baptist churches, and then being happily surprised to hear Judy Collins' sweet arrangement on the radio. Newton wrote the lyric--it was set to music later with a number of different tunes--the one we sing now is great!

My all time fav is Amazing Grace. John Newton wrote it in about 1770. It wasn't sung much in church, and was pretty much unknown until Dec 1970, when Judy Collins did the song. In Jan 1971, was the number one hit in the UK and the USA. I believe it is the most recorded song in music history. (God did it, just for this generation)
@minijcj1961, This is actually the second person I've ever seen run the bass bedals. My brother plays the organ in my church and when the spirit hits him he actuall shouts on the pedals and the music never stops.
Billy Preston talent was excellent. Look how he plays the organ. The skills he had was just amazing. That organ is talking! Beautiful instrumental. Now that is church going on there. RIP Billy Preston.
keyboard warrior. Name calling and no idea about the person you are name calling. Their age, race, intelligence, background, etc. Almost all music comes from gospel roots, dipshit. Im not a dumbass kid sittin in mommies basement picking on people because you didnt like their opinion. I said Ioved Billy but didnt like this version of this song. What is wrong with that? I love opera and classical music , does that make me an idiot in your eyes? Grow up, Get a life loser!
This is the best version of this song I have ever heard. Im putting this on my page no doubt, im in love with this song. So on that note, im going to learn how to play it. amen.
Remember what Jimi did with Star Spangled Banner? And what Miles did with Porgy and Bess? 'member what Aretha did with Amazing Grace? Well this is the zact same shit right here. AMEN and Hallelujah. Thank you for sharing this wonderful piece.
This is what many white people don't understand about our music, church to be exact. We take American/European music and add the soul of Africa (combined with the struggles of slavery) and create an original American masterpiece. Sing Amazing Grace in a white Church and hear the same song in the Black Church and it is almost altogether different. When you take the same song and allow two different culture's history to speak through it we create two different genres from one song.
You are so insightful! Blacks do not realize that we sing the way we do due to our collective history. It is a gift from God. Black gospel singers are ashamed of their birthrights. You have to listen to whites if you want to hear soul singing. Blacks are too busy trying to curtail the very sound God gave us to carry us over. Slavery in the USA was ruthless compared to other places in the world. God saw our plight and gave a unique song to carry us in the face of insurmoutable odds.
Huh? I don't think so! You must be talking about Blacks under the age of 30 or 40! I KNOW you're not talking about the Blacks who LIVED through the times of the KKK and other atrocities, and I DOUBT very seriously that you're referring to our ancestors. We have absolutely NOTHING to be ashamed of.
You need to go back and read what I wrote. I cannot relate to anything you said. I was complimenting someone else. I never referenced shame, KKK or age. A compliment is a compliment. I do not have a clue as to what you are talking about; I really do not! Acknowledging the gift God has given blacks to carry us through is nothing to be ashamed about or minsunderstood in any form!!! I WILL CONTINUE TO DO SO REGARDLESS OF WHO IT OFFENDS.
