Neither the actor in Adam or the actress in Mary were ever blind. THey were just following what Laura Ingalls Wilder said in her books, if there was one about something like this involving her sister, the man she met. THere was a book by the daughter Rose that did have the family together before Laura, Almonzo, and Rose all had to move away, and it did say Mary and Adam being blind.
@Darren50001 ...What are you talking about? The real Mary was never married, so Rose certainly couldn't have written a book about it. Mary lived with her parents in De Smet, SD, until their deaths and died a few years after Caroline.
I didn't know the real Mary was never married, I thought the show was based on the book, but I guess it was loosely based with a few other elements added to it. I'm not too familiar with the LIttle House book series, and not sure how many was even written telling the Ingalls' lives. I saw in one book that said Laura was about 15, going for her teacher's exam, and became like a young teacher in some town 12 miles from home and just met Almanzo, not sure if they were courting.
It's funny, because Laura and Almanzo married on the same day, August 15 as Mary and Adam, but in the books of laura it says that they were married at August 25.
That's Lou Fant playing the other reverend. He also played the father of the deaf boy that Laura was teaching in another episode. He's a master of American Sign Language. I studied ASL in college and had the utmost respect for him.
@archergrl1996 Thank you. I had found it later after I posted that. Irronically the wedding scene is missing from the episode I found, so you need the highlights for the ending.
@rudolfo4711 The proposal was funny, but you took out the best part. This episode was great for Mary's worries about raising a sighted child and the hurricane teaching her they could cope thru whatever comes.
@manduh87 They did, but later they got fed up with Mr. Standish and decided it was time to go back to Walnut Grove. So the Ingalls, Olsen's, and Garveys left Winoka and Charles asked Albert to join them. Walnut Grove was in ruin and Mr. Hanson, was bed ridden with Doc Baker caring for him. They both never left. When they got the town on it's feet, Hanson got to his feet.
I love how Adam/Mary and later Laura/Almanzo each have their own 'theme' instrumental music that plays whenever they are the feature oif an episode. The Adam/Mary music (that plays at the very end here where they kiss) is softer and more serious. The Laura/Almanzo music is much more upbeat and optimistic. Interesting.
Beautiful music! I just got chills hearing it, guess it brings back memories. Also reminds me of a track from 'Sense and Sensibility' which is one of my favorite films.
I don't get it. In this episode Mary gets married at age 16, but when Laura tried to get married to Almonzo at age 16, Charles made a big deal about Laura needing to wait to get married 'till she's 18.
The real Laura got married at 18,Mary never married in real life. I think there was a earler episode where Mary is engaged and Pa tells her she has to wait 'till she;s 15 before she's married.
@number1nancydrewfan It's propably because Mary had already kind of separated from her family. She had to go to the blind school and the Ingall's knew Mary needed Adam. Laura was still living at home and there was no reason she had to move from home.
What's funny about Mary and Laura, is Mary looks so much older, but Melissa Gilbert physically matured before Melissa Sue Anderson did. They just tried to make Melissa Gilbert look as young as possible while they made Mary look as old as possible. Only way Melissa Sue Anderson matured before Melissa Gilbert was in voice and height. By the way, where is the rest of the family at the wedding?
I think this video has the collection of the single dumbest comments ever, with normal ones occasionally. People get over the marriage thing, already. Historical accuracy? You will survive 5 or so minutes of this "inaccurate" marriage. If it bothers you that much take up a hobby.
of course. I own all 9 season box-sets of Little House on the prairie, and I have seen every episode. To See the Light (part 1 of 2) is where Adam regains his sight.
Adam regains his sight because he lost it in an accident in the first place, Mary remains blind as a consequence of a disease she got when she was very little.
They move to New York later on or a big city (I do not quite remember) so Adam can practise as an attorney
I am a Japanese but I grew up with this family. I was always dreaming of finding a guy like the pop and become a mum like ma. When Meary god blind, I cried with her. God bless you, the Ingals family.
The books of L.I Wilder are real, it is based on a true story. Her sister Mary was really blind, but she did not get married. It was not normal at at time. So it is a true story only a littlebit romanticised.
@Cathie8791 Yeah...I thought so too! In the episode when Laura was going to be getting married , some of it was about Almanzo's sister's (Eliza Jane) being so infatuated with Almanzo's friend Harve Miller! Give me a break!

ladyyuna2000 is correct in her comment. Mary Ingalls was never married. She also never taught at the school for the blind. So before you reply in correctly without thinking check your facts. Otherwise you end up looking stupid.
No codster you obviously haven't read the books. Mary returned from college and lived with Ma until Ma's death then split her time between living with Carie and Grace until she herself died, the first of the girls to pass away.

Caroline- I turned my back for a second and Mary was was off down the road.
Mary- If we have a baby it won't be like the school kids. They could run off down the road and we won't be able to see them.
Adam- I don't believe this! All anyone wants is a healthy baby! I guess we should pray to God to give us a blind one.
