yea Umar did a lot of things but remember he was the Khalipha not just some guy off the streets. beating would help but i think a father or older brothers should do it not strangers. although if a person's heart has been sealed by Allah (sw) then we cant do anything about it. So the best thing would be to make due to Allah (sw) for his/her guidence.
