Realizing ship was too close to the La Schole Rocks, Giglio-born chief steward who had just been called to the bridge (his parents house he grew up in is just above the jutting rocks) warned the ship was too close to shore. The Captain talking to Admiral Palomba on the phone, dropped his phone during the sudden (loud) collision. The Captain quickly ordered hard to port, Allowing the stern to move away from the rocks. The ship had slide sideways striking the rocks a midships during the turn.
At that point the engines went dead. That's when abandon ship should have been called (the ship was vertical for almost an hour more) and the anchors dropped. The Captain was apparently told to wait till the financial police could make films of the damage They were there within minutes. With no power the ship was drifting at about 12 knots to deeper water where the whole ship would have sunk beneath the surface.
At that point, drifting ever farther from the island, the Captain make a decision that probably saved hundreds of lives. Steered hard right, slowing the ship two one knot so he could use the bow thruster. This turned the bow to the south and the current pushed the ship's stern onto a sandbar. Unfortunately the bow thruster probably caused the ship to lean to starboard, pushing the water to that side. With the whole ship now grounded the listing grew ever greater.
Capitain is a FUCKING CAZZA! When the coast guard ORDERS him back to the ship he was like- "but mommy I too scared and FUCKING cowardly to go back . Me needo mucho vino. CUNT-FACED ASS-WIPE!

I am not talking about what caused the incident, I am talking about what he did afterward. Yes, I agree, you have to be an idiot to not be paying attention to your Depth Finder. Any third rate seaman would know that. This was a major screw up, and yes, the Captain is ultimately responsible.
I was just glad to see all those lives saved, that is the bottom line.
This so called Captain is living proof of Italian pride. No one should ever done what he did. He is responsible of KILLING those people there. None of you cant justify any action that he did. That is so stupid so....dont have a word for it. I hope he gets a life in jail and his mind collapses. Him becoming a shell of a human. No mercy for week.
@thedorantor This is youtube, where the pimple faced teenagers come out to troll, spew racist rants, shout ethnic slurs, or driveby comment their hate in delicate ways because they have no other outlet to do so in public without getting their asses kicked. They receive immense satisfaction from the negative attention but if we instead ignore these little nerds or flag for spam then they eventually give up and move on to the next most viewed video.
Futhermore, before you get on a ship or a plane for that matter understand there are risks..DOn't blame the crew for your panic and fear!! I doubt any of these rich fatcats even spoke Italian which leads me to my next point. Learn the basic emergency language before you go vacation abroad!!
@kinectaddict he was detained because he abandoned ship but since you claim he was killing people. Would you get in a lifeboat or would you run around a sinking ship looking for survivors? I know the answer the media has convinced you to say. "Save the passengers" That's crap...I would have jumped in a lifeboat no matter what. No way I would "save the passengers". The captain did what any sensible human would do.
Cry much? Leave it up to the media to show Americans crying about the chaos....obviously there will be chaos from an accident but some of these people are pandering to the presstitutes and lawyering up in hopes of cash settlement. If you don't want to drown then swim to shore!!!Its not that hard..I mean you can see land!! Why are some of these passengers complaining about no guidance from the crew? The guidance is common sense- ABANDON SHIP MORONS !! Be happy you're alive ....accidents happen!
So Kine what did you expect him to do? Stay out in deep water and allow the ship to sink to depths unknown? He was dealing with a situation that creates chaos amongst people who either have no idea about the sea, have only been on one cruise or in some cases can't even swim. He made a decision based on the situation and knowing that the crew were a bunch of chicken shits who were going to be the first ones over the rails. He made a decision based on the lesser of two evils.
Sad, apparently one of the crew wanted to wave to his misses so thy got 2close 2the shore & 2much speed caused a big gash on the side... these sort of things shouldn't be happening in this day & age...
Captain of this ship wasnt last one around. He was sitting at the rescue boat while passengers were saving them selves..... This reminds me of worlds thinnest book, its about Italian war heroes during WW2. Or what does Italian adonis do when someone steps on his toes? He calls mom.
@padman1975 racist much? the common sense captain was probably thinking wtf are you morons doing???Jump, Abandon Ship idiots the land is like 10 feet away...Why should the captain play hero and hang around watching morons cry for help when help is 10 feet away???If I was captain I would have done the same thing..get in lifeboat and order people to jump in a boat or jump in the water with a vest. You can't save everyone because some people are just plain dumb as we can see here.
The Captain and the crew should all be charged and convicted. Based on what the passengers are saying the Captain and the Crew acted with the slightest interests of the passengers, the crew was downplaying the situation. Haven't ships sailed there for 1000s of years? How does a modern ocean liner run aground?
@7477238 charged and convicted? wow spoken like a true a-hole. Yeah, let's round up the crew and throw them in jail so the rich fatcats can go back golfing and sailing all over the world. Please get real.

Ive been on a similar Fincantieri built ship, those things are so amazingly massive. The sight of something that big listing (sp?) so bad must have been a scarry sight, let alone experience.
I do wish that people would refrain from using bad language on You Tube - your were not on the ship and the people interviewed did not use this language. I wish that You Tube moderated this remarks
Being Italian, which I am, had nothing to do with this. The Italian's have been going to sea since before the days of the Roman Empire and are quite competent, and very good sailors. They are second only to the Greeks for having a history for as much naval experience.
I would venture to say that this was a Quartermaster issue where someone on the bridge was not paying as much attention to the soundings as they should have been. A Reef that large should have been showing up on the sonar.
For those of you who do not know the power of the sea just take a look at that gash along the hull. I am assuming he wasn't doing more than 5 or 10 knots and look at the damage. Once you take the sea for granted you are as vulnerable as a dummie in a crash test. It is a constant job of being alert and totally in control of your vessel. I don't care if it is a small sail boat, or huge ocean liner, the same things apply. You are ultimately responsible for the safety of your crew and passengers.
Yes, I just heard this morning that the Captain left the ship before the passengers and crew. And yes that is something that should be considered before passing judgement. But my opinion still stands that by bringing the ship closer to shore he saved a number of lives. His departure before the crew is inexcusable and he will probably never sail another ship in his lifetime.
THE FILIPINOS AND THE CAPTAIN WERE THE ONLY SELFISH MEMBERS..STOP BEING SO RACIST AGAINST ITALIANS
Nobody talked about the local popolation they opened their houses in the middle of the night...let's be onest there were probably more people on the ship than off
IT'S THE BIGGEST RESCUE OF THIS TYPE YOU CAN'T MAKE COMPARISON AND SAY AN OTHER NATION WOULD HAVE DONE BETTER -LIKE A STUPID NAZI GERMAN SAID !
They lied to the passengers and said it was the generator when they had actually run aground! You can see the lights on when the ship is already listing, they should have abandoned ship well before that point-and the Captain left his post and passengers??So bad!!!
I was on this ship! It was crazy! People were running for lifeboats but half of them were submerged on the other side! The crew were letting only women and children on board and NO Negros!!! I couldn't believe it! We ended up scaling down into a private fishing vessel! Were ok on the island now and our transportation home is being arranged. The ship cruised into a rock or something. It was loud when it happened! I'm ok though! Vacation is all messed up though!
The captain said acording to his charts that he was in safe water for shipping after he ran agrond he made his way to the coast so it could not fully sink. Him and the 1st officer have been arested for multiple manslaughter though for abandoning the ship leaving the crew and passangers onboard confused not knowing what to do.
It says they were far out when it happened, then they sailed toward the coast to run aground and get near shore. I imagine they hit a submarine, a UFO, something that should NOT have been there, who knows? Maybe the Iranians are testing underwater weapons (haha, kidding)
i got so fucking scared this morning... my mom and dad took a cruise of Italy and i woke up this morning to this. i cried my eyes out and i tired to give them a call. no one picked up. ten minutes later i got a call and it was them. they asked if everything was alright and i asked them if their cruise had sunk. they said no like i was crazy and i told them to check the news. i was so relieved. my heart goes out to everyone still surviving that crash <3 :)
see if they would just put Teflon on the hull it would have just slid along without sticking.
passenger # 1 says "my Ipad maps is telling me we are over land"
# 2 says " my Ipad has an app that is telling me its time to put on your life vest". Ten minutes later the captain gets a text message on his Iphone from the engine room " hey captain I know we are not supposed to wake you after midnight but there is water coming in down here"

@gkimwell I hate to say it, but sometimes... shit happens. You cannot stop a cruise ship on a dime. If it was heading in the direction of something and the instruments didn't pick it up in time... then there was no hope for it. The people running the ship aren't infallible, they rely on the instruments to tell them how close they are to land because they simply cannot see to guesstimate around that big of a ship. Instincts do not equal clairvoyance, but they help in the aftermath.
@IngloriusBastard11 from what i gather he was sailing too close to the shore in the first place ,,hence jagged rocks cause gaping hole in hull of ship .
