  • This reminds me of New York city nights

  • I talked about this song and this chords today im my jazz classes, just genius sus4

  • this has to be one of my favorite jazz compositions its so inspiring and it just moves me, and you cant lose with an allstar lineup like that.

  • love herbie hancock's calm, melodic solo

  • **Sigh**....This tune reminds me of my nights in Manhattan when I lived in the metro area... driving to the Holland tunnel in the wee hours of the morning along rain swept streets, the eerie 'buzzing' silence, the occasional homeless man sleeping on an abandoned building's front stoop, the steam rising up from the manhole covers, feeling warm & secure with snug walls of skyscapers surrounding me..... pffff, look at me trying to be all introspective & poetic.... LOL ^_^

  • @SomethingReal1119....SOunding poetic there like spoken word! Reading it artistically aloud, it actually matched. Nice job.

  • Oh Freddy, what a delight when you shine your brightness upon us...

  • To date, I've listened to this track 128 times on iTunes.

  • Mesmerizing trumpet solo!

  • Brilliant piece.

  • Splendid!!! That Feel Good Music

  • :) I just came back from his concert at the Massey Hall Toronto :) I cried 3 times

  • Pure poetry. My first copy was an L.P. record. This is my 3rd CD, as I keep giving away copies to friends.......wonderful.

  • Just fabulous.

  • This track takes me back to my first weeks of university. This was the track that got me through it. Amazing.

  • A special time in the history of music, and then Maiden Voyage before the money changers ruined it.

  • at 3:21 when Freddy comes in for that run anyone know what the notes are? or how I can get them? I wanna play like Freddy. By the way I live in San Francisco and I saw Freddy a few times in concert he was a great trumpet player! Im glad I saw him in concert!

  • @jvilla1966 I want to SING like Freddy!

  • the 5 folks that dislike this legendary piece of music a bet you are beiber fans..... We wont cast our pearls b/4 swine.

  • its all about the music

  • this is so beautiful and relaxing. I listen to it before i meditate, because it gets me in the mood.

  • This song is amazeing!

  • what a fantastic group of chords -- a musical meditation on the sea and a great destressor

  • Great shit. I love music.

  • I'd left this for a while....and coming back to it,hits home how good it is

  • perfect

  • The two top comments are epic.

    !Nat!

  • wonderment!

  • @ngiuliniello1968

    thats a word?

    !!!

  • When you listen to it, you're somehow all the time waiting for a resolution that never come, and that makes the beauty of it, traveling without any departure nor arrival, without destination.

  • timeless, just makes my brain all happy

  • This is one of the most incredible pieces of music that has ever graced my ears. I have this album on my home stereo, my computer, my car, and even as my ringtone. I can't get enough of it!!!!

  • THANK GOD FOR THE INTERNET..I LOST ALL MY JAZZ ALBUMS MY MOTHER LEFT ME..AND THIS IS ONE SONG I PLAYED TO DEATH..THANKS FOR POSTING

  • all sus4 chords, never resolves to a major chord, thats musical genius

  • @knowgeddy

I would say that would be more non-conformist than genius; you could write like that too. It still is very beautiful, anyway.

  • @knowgeddy not ALL sus4 chords, just being pedantic ;)

  • @ZanderPodraza no one likes a pedantic pianist :P i hope you've got this down for tomorrow :)

  • @knowgeddy dumb conception of the music, you have! john lee hooker played all of his songs with just an E7. but he wasn't a musical genius. it's music man! play what you got in your soul

  • freakin beautiful!

  • Yes.

  • GTV 4!!

  • it's pretty ncie to listen such a rthythm and thinking of the the night in Hong Kong.

walking down the street with a cozy mood. Rain's splitting, weather is cool, tram and trolley bus rolling on the road......in Central and Lan Kwai Fong

    Thanks for sharing mate

  • sustained notes -- and that scale just keeps the sound expanding.

  • ....I heard once that this theme is based on a commercial ad jingle that Herbie once did, and he developed this tune from it...also, you academic big wigs, isn't this modal jazz?... :-)

  • ....I heard once that this theme is based on a commercial ad jingle that Herbie once did, and he developed this tune from it...

  • Wish herbie would solo more or louder in this

  • benchmark beauty. and... dig the gorgeous cymbals work by tony! a language all its own.

  • Amazing how sound can be shaped to create images in ones mind. Herbie is a painter, sound is his medium. End result, jazz. Art for the mind...

  • amazing song--I can feel my blood pressure dropping already..........aaaahhh.

  • Beautiful

  • tat's fine..!!

  • Five of the greatest jazz musicians of all time playing Herbie's masterpiece .... this IS a song for your mind/body/spirit-- the very soul of humanity. Art that informs and gives dignity to our lives. It is perfection.

  • An easier way to think about Dorian: a regular minor scale with a raised (or major) 6th. So: La instead of Leh.

  • man, what a masterpiece this album is.

  • An old staple that reminds me of years past.

  • Does anyone know what scale I should go about using to solo on this song in guitar? We're playing it in my Jazz Band, but I'm not very good with music so I don't know what to use...

  • @2ThickScoops dorian scales man

  • @2ThickScoops dorian scales man

  • @2ThickScoops what billyben said. the dorian scale is a scale that starts on the second note of the original chord. like a G dorian would have all the same flats as an F maj scale, just starting on the G

  • I'm not really writing to anyone, but if you cats are saying "dorian" over a song which is to me parallel dom7th sus chords, you would go dorian off the root of each chord? D dorian over the D7sus, F dorian over the F7sus, etc.?

  • I'm pretty sure the lick at 3:21 is the best trumpet lick I've ever heard in my whole life. Anybody else know any others that might even compare to it?

  • @SirEatsAlot Damn man, you might have me and everyone on Youtube on that one...that is just some graceful trumpet playing

  • i love.

  • Itt was reported in the news back in the mid 60.s Tricky Dick (Nixon) listened to cut in his limo on the way to the White House. Jocol.

  • This song has THEE best trumpet lick. Hands down.

  • I've just read this song is made entirely of suspended 4th chords without any resolution to a major chord. Makes it even more impressive.

  • This was a commercial hit?!?

Has to be nuclear waste or the 4 years of Bush that has corroded the already insipid minds of America's pathetic youth.

  • @MegaLamka You're absolutely right. It was George Bush who killed jazz.

  • @dannyinternetz Why do you say that George Bush was the one who killed jazz?

  • Tuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuune!!!!

  • Isnt it nice to see a comment board where everyone isnt insulting one another :)

  • @dinosaurtattoo man you're so right! It must be because all people here share the common interest.

  • @dinosaurtattoo

That's the beauty of jazz, it transcends the hate. That's why in jazz music is the language that everyone can communicate to love one another. That's why in jazz there were so many mixed groups no matter what your language, background or color. Real music is transcendent.

  • @dinosaurtattoo only in jazz lol chillest music of all

  • @Accelerando2000 It doesn't work in Jazz buddy. Trolling doesn't exist in Jazz :)

  • @Onespellpro Four people seem to think it works...

  • @Accelerando2000 im guessing you're one of them?

  • @Onespellpro Now 71 people seem to think it works.

  • @Accelerando2000 LMFAOOOO hahahhahaha omg

  • @Accelerando2000 See, jazz does inspire intelligent thought :)

  • Comment removed

  • @dinosaurtattoo Yes it is nice. Thanks for reminding everybody of the importance of everyone getting along with one another. Such an important message on a website like youtube where people often put each other down. I agree with you wholeheartedly.

  • @dinosaurtattoo You would say that, asshole.

  • @dinosaurtattoo FUCK YOU

  • ...man oh man this piece reminds me of when I was growing up in East Oakland, my dad played it along with all his other classic, vintage jazz collection. I was five in sixty-five! Long live Mr. Hancock!

  • .....The power of modes.

  • from such a brilliant album - thanks for sharing.

  • Wonderful - thanks to Jamie Cullum for playing this on BBC Radio 2 tonight!

  • as a little girl my dad often played this more than often EVERY Sunday he played his Jazz in the basement thanks

  • Good Listening ! Helps me think things through !

  • i will never understand how popular music went from this to Tayor Swift, the music industry is bullshit

  • @Dethsquirrel

There has always been good music and popular crap.

  • Herbie is my all-time favorite!!! His line-up aint to shabby either!!

  • Brian Auger's adaptation of this song on the befour album is wonderful also

  • @koolrockguy1 - yeah i wish someone would PLEEEEZE post that Auger / OE version again on youtube

  • Brian Auger's adaptation of this song on the befour album is wonderful also

  • I put this song on this Christmas day to bring a great spirit. I feel God in the music. I remember the first time I heard it one night in my room when I was a junior in high school in 1971. After hearing Freddies solo I started to cry and made a little pledge to myself to find God in music and in life as it made me feel that "whatever the cost, to arrive at such a beautiful place would be worth it". Thank you Herbie, Freddie and of course Tony Williams on drums.....

  • Enchanting as always

  • nice, like long time ago

  • this is such a classic

  • First heard this album in the autumn of 1986 and I clicked with it immediately. Herbie regards this as one of the best songs he's written, which doesn't surprise me.

  • Who dares dislike?

  • @tommybricksetti give it time...

  • One dislike? the person must be deaf

  • @rastahuen They forgot to get on the boat before it left for its maiden voyage.

  • @rastahuen give it time...

  • @rastahuen give it time... ;-)

  • @rastahuen give it time...

  • Modal playing like this allows such freedom with extended melodies, almost meditative. And very interesting harmonies between the horns - any two notes of that dorian scale would go well together. A favorite!

  • Great album.Such a moody conversation between Hubbard and Shorter.I love the solo starting at 1:20.Hubbard is great as always.Tony Williams really has a feel for smooth transitions.Great Quintet...

  • Baker Deathwish Shane Heyl intro !!!

  • I think I've listened to this song over 20 times today.

  • Sooooooooo.........LOVELY! God Bless you Herbie, you are a truly beautiful soul.

  • What a lovely piece. Noticed the zero dislikes. Got linked here from Coltrane's 'wise one.'

  • You can't deny the artistry of this cut. It will forever stand the test of time. Excellent!

  • Freddie Hubbard is god....

  • THANK YOU FOR PUTTING THIS UP HERE!! (Yes, I'm yelling at the top of my lungs!) My fav jazz tune of all time.

  • D7sus4 F7sus4 D7sus4 F7sus4 Eb7sus4 C#m7 D7sus4 F7sus4 : )

  • Freddie Hubbards' has to be one of the best solos ever... What a track!

  • Masterpiece !

  • crown

  • The real thing... thanks !

  • thats my man freddie on the trumpet mastermind

  • This tune, incidentally, is often used by music teachers to illustrate the use of suspended chords as that is what it is from beginning to end. You can really hear the 4th.

  • i'll try to upload it as soon as i can..

  • so cosmis and transcedental.. there is also a version singed by Mark Murphy .. its also very cool :)

  • i just love this song..i see the ship and i just see it..naturally...

  • can it be anz better

  • Hancock is one of the most under-rated jazz pianists AND COMPOSER of our time. Thank you for posting this. Maybe the young generation can appreciate this classic.

  • @photorams65 What?! Hancock is in no way underrated. What do you mean?

  • @damienoud - perhaps I'm mistaken. My bad! All I know he's been around for how many decades.... (5+) and paid many dues. Still great

  • You need to hear " Tell Me A Bedtime Story"

  • @photorams65 I dont believe he considered overated, he is esteemed by jazz musicians, schools, and critics.

  • @photorams65 I'm not sure that he's underated..I think most people (jazz fans) know he's brilliant....

  • one hell of a line up on this

  • i had to take a test with this song lol..great stuff tho

  • I first heard this album in the autumn of 1986 and fell in love with it. You can't go wrong with Blue Note music. Bobby Hutcherson also does a great version.

  • there would be no hip hop without be bop believe it, this is the essence of real music

    no overdubs no enhancement.

  • Pure classic! Go Herbie Go!

  • I play the Double Bass part of this song at my school :P

  • @UncleBubbalina Yeah man !

  • a zenith.

  • This rhythm is just fantastic! First time I've heard it, just WOW, lovin it.

  • great!make my mind thinking so smoothly!

  • 3:14 is still my favorite part of any song ever written.

  • WOW!

  • Masterful. Herbie is undoubtedly one of the best musicians of the 20th century.

  • This is one of the most gorgeous and soulful songs ever written by Herbie. It makes me so nostaligic for the 60s and Slug's Saloon in New York City.

  • @sohooded I always think of nights in NYC whenever I hear this, also. 2:00am, rain slicked streets, Autumn time, driving towards the tunnel going home from some avant garde play...

  • @jazzinnature081 I remember you; I was crossing Houston St. and you almost ran me over, so engrossed were you in Maiden Voyage on WBAI. I got ready to scream "Jersey driver" at you, but I heard Freddie's solo from your open window, knew you were a kindred spirit and shouted God speed.

  • @jazzinnature081 Totally haha Jazz is in my opinion creates a scene in ones mind more than anyother genre by far everysong for me just llike has its own story and characters almost

  • @sohooded 1965..Nights in .New York's East Village..over in the The Far East, 3rd Street betwen B&C.....the Old Reliable...Slug's Saloon..those were the days. There will never be a time like that again. I just finished watching the film Blow Up with the marvelous score by Herbie....

  • This song takes to a beautiful place every time. It is also very modern even though it is as old as dirt. I love.

  • @hairbraidingschool uNFORTUNATELY, EVERYTHING THAT IS AS OLD AS DIRT IS NOW THE BEST THERE IS............

  • @sohooded Copy that...

  • @afrosheen6 Yes indeed. The Best there ever was or will be.

  • @sohooded What year was this album made...?

  • @afrosheen6 1965..and many in the know consider it a jazz masterpiece. One of the finest jazz albums of all time. I'm so glad you like it.

  • @sohooded Incredible album. I've got this piece as well as Dolphin Dance in my play list. Oddly enough, i discovered him decades ago when he was in his experimental faze, i guess you could say. "Rock It..." Do you recall this song...?

  • @afrosheen6 Hi again...it's not Rock It...it's called Rocket and was a mild commercial hit. I'm glad you love this genius Herbie Hancock.! Have you checked out Herbie's piano solo on Stevie Wonder's song As? A lot of people think it's Stevie but actually it's Herbie Hancock. Be well..peace

  • @sohooded I'll check that out, much thanks.

  • @sohooded

I feel like this is the elegant and mind expanding music.

  • wonderful, magical, enchanting music. The whole album is a real masterpiece!!!

  • @waffelicchi very romantic album too...by all means, such a beauty
