The reason, in my opinion, the tempo is so fast, is because this is a live performance, they have to speed things up a bit or people will get bored. It's just the tempo of this society now-a-days, really. :) I think he's adorable xD

the tempo is everything in this song. He wants you to feel pity but the beat makes it happy. The oppisite the whole play is supposed to be. nice voice though

Fred Ebb is the best at this song. I enjoy all variations, especially in non-pro theater and tis is an excellent job. if you're looking for pointers, watch Fred Ebb do it.
