  • If she was willing to move and walk around, it must not deeply be important to her to stay still for George... so why didn't she move elsewhere? She's a wonderful performer, without a doubt! This interpretation just struck me in an odd way...

  • @irishactingboy If you had seen the show, "Sunday in the Park with George," you'd know that the entire section of the song, in which she's moving about the stage, is an inner monologue, after which she resumes her pose for George. In the original production, Dot began the song standing in a "false front" prop dress, from which she emerged to move around during that part of the song.

  • Anyone else feel she's channelling Bernadette a bit in this performance?

  • @skywalk7 No.

  • She is absolutely fantastic!

  • all that matters is 5:30.

  • This woman should be playing Mama Rose. She has the belt for it. And the red dress!

  • loved her interpretation. great presence too.

  • this is a simply gorgeous song from sondheim and she has a fantastic voice with energy and presence and does not bore you but i'm not a fan or her acting in this piece it's a little too much for dot

  • This is a fantastic/humorous song.. And for some reason this reminds me of when I have to work with actors who complain a lot.. This is very amusing.. ^.^

  • Power, poise, perfect!

  • I love her voice and energy,

    but it seems mildly forced.

I think we can all agree that Bernadette has this character, role, and song on lock as of now.

  • her voice is great but it's too 'overdone' for sondheim. i'd like to see her sing some Norma Desmond from Sunset Boulevard though.

  • love her energy

  • I saw this on Broadyway. Spelndid. Amazing. Beats allt eh rest.

  • DAMN.

  • AMAZING!

  • That chick is not fucking around.

  • ahahaha what an incredible statement!

  • that was one of the best performances i have ever seen in my life. incredible!

  • when she says "i love your size george!"

    wat is she refering to?

  • It could be that George Seurat's work is all done on a very large scale-- that's the only way true pointillism can be done. So it may be referring to that.

  • Um, actually, I'm pretty sure she's saying "I love your SIGHS, George." As in, he's an artistic fellow who sits around sighing.

  • I've done this piece, and in the score it's written as "size." Plus, she's supposed to be his mistress, so...maybe it is referring to a certain part of George's body?

  • I love your ambiguous allusion. That's awesome.

  • Could it be his "thighs" she likes? lol

  • i always thought she simply meant she likes his physical size...

  • lol, its hard to tell in this one but in the version i saw she had her hand in an area that implied something a little different :)

but hey, its art, interpret it as you will

  • Wow, "sighs"...that never even occurred to me. But think about it this way...this is the first song in the show, so it is establishing the story, including their relationship. I'm 99% certain she's referring to "size" in the wink-wink-nudge-nudge sense.

  • wow! i didnt know u guys knew her. but no shit better than bernie! that was amazing!

  • I did Les Miserables with Kelly and was her understudy (Fantine) Brilliant, pro and consistent. I always respected her.she never got caught up in all of the backstage bullshit. We thought she was rude but looking back, I see she was just blocking out all the pettiness and gossip that can go on backstage.she was always professional(except when she called one of the Gavroche's a little bastard for screwing up her blocking.

Kelly, you just keep getting better.

    J. Kruskamp

  • Yes, I know Kelly very well and she is a pro at everything she does. She does not get involved with gossip and useless crap. Many think of her as being stuck-up and rude because of it, but in all honesty she is simply avoiding the negative aspects in the situation and for that reason alone, who could not respect that?

  • Kelly is a teacher at my school, and I've worked with her before. She does have a very powerful voice. We unfortunately don't have a musical theatre program though, so it's disappointing to have talented teachers and nothing to show for it.

  • what what what?! she's a TEACHER at your school and you guys don't have a musical theatre program?! good heavens! where do you go?

  • She's awesome!

  • Love it!

  • GREAT

  • she has a really powerful voice

  • Kelly Ground, you are amazing. Just phenominal!

  • I agree- This is an interesting and new interpretation. Brava!

  • Kelly Ground's performance is pure genius. To see a brilliant actor who is also an amazing singer is a rare treat. I saw Bernadette as "Dot" twice on Broadway, and this woman blows her off the stage. Seriously. Completely phenomenal!!! I bought the CD of this incredible concert!!! I wish I'd been there.

  • Dear god she is fantastic. That is an amazing belt!

  • I really like hearing new interpretations or renditions of songs. Especially when we have been used to it being performed by only one particular voice type/style--she is absolutely great!!! What a concert this must have been.

  • This is really fun to watch. I saw the other clip of "Ah But Underneath" and really am amazed that she did these two + other songs in one evening.

Yes... she grows on you... and is fab.

  • I'm Tom Orr, George in the vid & co-director w/ Tom Segal of SIMPLY SONDHEIM. The Woman: Kelly Ground, leading lady & brassy broad. If she seems too loud, maybe we're too used to thin voices on this song? I see Kelly's Dot as a saucy buxom barmaid. We were set to sing "Move On", but it was decided last minute this was a stronger choice. With little time for rehearsal, she nailed one of Sondheim's trickiest patter songs. All I did was let my hair down (literally) while she brought down the house!

  • I had never heard this song, and she striked me as a little too old, but of course, it is not the real show, and secondly, she absolutley was fantastic as a singer. I imagine she must have filled that theatre with sound, and it is a rare thing nowadays too have a leading lady, or actor who can still do that without artificial protection. She has my favorite type of voice for a woman, a high belt, wide range mezzo. Thank you for putting this togeather.

  • I originally very much disliked this woman...she's a little old for Dot, I think. And too loud. But now that I'm watching again, I find she's grown on me. It's weird.

  • The Woman is Great!

  • Who are these actors? Come on! You gotta give credit! Plus, I wanna know! :)

  • Absolutely brilliant!! This woman is astonishing!!! Why isn't she on Broadway?!!
