Scientists have recreated the 1918 Spanish flu virus, one of the deadliest ever to emerge, to the alarm of many researchers who fear it presents a serious security risk. Undisclosed quantities of the virus are being held in a high-security government laboratory in
Atlanta, Georgia, after a nine-year effort to rebuild the agent that swept the globe in record time and claimed the lives of an estimated 50 million people.
Would you like for the materials that the lab may be working with to be transported via truck through Boston traffic down Mass Ave to the BUMC? Talk about security vulnerability!
The hazardous materials will be transported through the city to the site, through commercial and residential neighbourhoods. Might not necessarily be Mass Ave, but will be down some city street, I fail to see a difference.
The reality is that this lab will give back to society by helping to fight existing diseases, just as BU's Boston Medical Center helps the people in its community. BU is the second largest employer in Boston and BMC is the second largest provider of healthcare to people who are in need of assistance, through Mass Medicaid.
All good and well. I'm sure that BU is providing plenty employment, efficient and readily available healthcare etc, etc. But the fact of the matter is, something which cannot be denied; It is being built in an area dominated by low-income groups of African American and Hispanic descent.
BU's School of Medicine is in the South End, it makes sense to place the lab in the same area, near the facility with which it will work. The BU/NIH project will have no adverse effects on the surrounding community, unless the extreme slim possibility of a breach in BSL 4 safety.
Government labs moving in to your neighborhood make Wallmart seem like a good neighbor. My Youtube channel is about out of control university growth.

Why not build this biolab nearer to a white community, what about by Beacon Hill?
