Hey, nice tutorial, but what I would really like to know is that on my glass object the shadow is completely black so it doesn't look realistic. It should be lighter so I could see the table under it. Could you tell me how to fix that problem?
@Tharandomgamerz it sounds to me that you've got an issue with the lamp settings. Just make sure that your lamps have the Ray Shado option toggled off in the "shadow and spot" tab. Also make sure that the "no diffuse" and "no specular" options are off in the "lamp" tab.
@spellmakerone thanks, but I allready managed to fix that problem by changing the color of the shadow lol. It really worked. It was first black, but then I changed it to gray pretty near to white so it made it transparent enough.
I would like to request a tutorial on how to make the skin Texture for a SackBoy a character from the video game little big planet. An thank you very much for your tutorial.
@JJULLER Alright, I think I might make a "textures" tutorial. Haven't uploaded anything for a while! In SackBoy's case, it'll be pretty much a picture that you take from a real-life fabric (maybe a sweater) and apply it to the character. I'll include that in the vid.
@Microsoftultimatefan Well, the materials in this video are the default at the beginning. For a good stainless steel texture we need to put some thought into it, especially on how it reflects light, which depends on the angle of the viewer and doing that is somewhat complex but it looks amazing. I'll give it a shot and see if I can upload a vid with that.
Thank you I really needed to make a semi-transparent texture this helped me not only to do so but to understand and be able to create most glass with different settings.
@ImmortalAcorn You're absolutely right. That is actually a feature of the material where the shadow is being cast upon, NOT the transparent material. Go to the "materials" tab of the object receiving the shadow and toggle "TraShadow". That allows the material to receive transparent shadows. It's off by default because it takes longer to render. Hope it helps!
HI :) I think this is a very good tutorial and that you have been very through.! This is needed by many of us blender noobs and I for one appreciate it. I hope you have made some small profit from selling your models as I would love to see more tutorials from you ! I can just tell your passionate about blender 8*) Your English is very good as well. Great Work !
@InteractiveBUD Well, not to vertices, but to poligons. You just have to apply the texture to specific areas of your model. Take a look at my tutorial on "modeling deep-looking eyes in blender" and you'll get the idea.
great tutorial, the only problem i have is after i render the texture its not applied to the object in blender, am i just not pressing the idiot button or something? please help :D
Hmm, I can think of 2 possible reasons of why it's not working for you:
1) the material is not applied to the object; select the object with the right mouse button, then press F5 until the "materials button" is selected (the red sphere icon). If the preview is empty, then just link the material to the object by clicking on the arrow, left of the "Add New" button and select the material.
2) Ray tracing is disabled; press F10, under the "Render" tab, make sure that the "Ray" button is enabled :)
Actually yeah, although I'm not sure if it's what you're looking for. See the panel buttons (where the purple pac-man is)? The rightmost button (it has a landscape on it), click it, or just press F10. Now, on the "render" tab you'll find OSA, which means "oversampling" the higher the OSA the better the quality. However I don't think that will be the solution, how does it look exactly?
I'd have to look at the file to know what's wrong. Might be the IOR being too high or too low, actually, there are a million things that could be happening in your particular case, but if you followed the tutorial step by step you should have a good result.
VERY CLEAR, NICE TNX SO MUCH!

Great video! A lot of tutorials only tell you what to do, not why you're doing it.

Is there a way to make stainless steel or is that the default material of the cube you get when you start Blender?

How come my block's shadow is so thick? Even when I make it clear, it still cast a shadow as if my glass box was fully opaque.

both of those things are working ray is enabled and the material is applied. just wont apply to the object :(, makes a great render pic tho lol

Question, is there a way to set the quality of the renderer, because mine SO doesn't look like this.
DuckSink 2 years ago

spellmakerone 2 years ago
When I normally render the "Glass object" it just seems as a trans cube(for instance) with a small bright cube inside it.
DuckSink 2 years ago
Then you got it right, you're probably using a plain background, try putting stuff behind your glass object to really see the effect.
spellmakerone 2 years ago
Nope, I did it and it's just blocky and glitchy, and Not in the quality of the rendering on your preview image.
