This is not a very good feature. It DOES do what it says HOWEVER all your apps stay on the toolbar. So you don't really clear up space like in Linux. So if you have 1 app open in each of 4 windows, each window will have 4 items on the taskbar. The point is to have it seem separate but it doesn't do the job. Just learn to use ALT+TAB and get a 2nd monitor for your setup and you'll be 20 time happier than this. Besides this will slow your system a little.

Honestly you should just buy new. At this point in time you cannot really get much out of upgrading. The Core 2 Duos and the AMD equal are far too superior to deny just spending a little and updating.

People who say that this will lag. I doubt the lag will be that noticeable unless you plan on running games on each virtual desktop (I'll assume that most people nowadays have 2+ gigs of ram).
