Stupid question but since Diablo and whoever the other one was Miphisto i think died then what happens after this. And what are those stones for. I played Diablo 2 and beat it i just never payed attention.. And also where does Diablo 3 start off at? So please if you have time explain it to me. thanks!
@Gazkhuul Well we don't actually know a whole lot about the natures of the Worldstone(the big red gem), or it's true power. We also don't know what exactly will happen now that is destroyed, or whether it had to be destroyed in the first place, the prophecy never says that the Worldstone HAS to be destroyed. The Soulstones were said to be a part of the Worldstone at one point. They were created by Tyrael to keep the powers of the three prime evils(Diablo, Mephisto, and Baal) contained.
@Gazkhuul Diablo 3 will pick up twenty years after the what happened at the end of Diablo 2(the destruction of the Worldstone). There was supposed to be an invasion from the Burning Hells, but it never happened. Blizzard has confirmed that a lot of the story in Diablo 3 will tell us more about Tyrael, and that the failed invasion had to do with one of the Lesser Evils, Azmodan, Belial. Azmodan if you don't know can be seen in the cinematic trailer Blizzard released at Blizzcon.
@Gazkhuul Blizzard also confirmed that this will not be the last game in the series. Keep in mind that Diablo is alive, and has been confirmed in Diablo 3. As far as I know there are two Lesser Evils left. I hope this has helped you a little bit, there is a lot to the story of Diablo lawl, someone else can correct if I am wrong on any of this. There you go!
Then again Marius was prety much fucked up since the begining: What diference whould have done if he refused to give the stone to Baal?, Baal would simply kill him and take the stone for himself (wich he did anyway).
He's a magician that sacrificed himself to imprison Baal. They stuck Baal's soulstone in his head and locked him away in the desert. The mummy face you see when Baal reveals himself is Tal Rasha's body that Baal took over after many years of wrestling for control with him.
Duriel is one of the Lesser Evils. Baal ordered him to guard the tomb and the imprisoned Tyrael while he went off to find his brothers, Mephisto and Diablo. If you're interested in the whole lore and story aspect of it, I recommend you google for "The Arreat Summit", it's the official D2 and LoD info website by Blizzard. They have articles on Baal, Duriel and so on.
What's odd is that despite Diablo's more terrifying and brutal appearance, he seemed to be much nicer to Marius than Baal. Whom he owes his freedom to.
Then again, all those time he was with Marius, he's still bound to the body of that warrior from Diablo 1 and have yet to regain his full strength.
"You have done exactly as you were meant to do. However, I am not the Archangel Tyrael...."
If I were Marius at that moment it would be the worst feeling in the world. Knowing that I have failed the entire world, not just once, but I was dumb enough to do it a second time!
The unknown hero, who defeated diablo must have been incredibly powerful. By the looks of his strength and armour, it looks like a sort of warrior/knight.
@estagonandfire If you play the original game, the class of Warrior is the canon story. He wore heavy armour, wields powerful blades, and could use deadly magic.
The other classes from the first game make appearances. You fight the Archer in the Graveyard in Act 1, and the Summoner in Act 2 is the Mage.
Um, "dumbass", Baal could have grabbed the soulstone off him anytime he wished. There's no magic spell that's preventing him from grabbing it from Marius. He's just playing with Marius the whole time because he's a sadist.
@AidanMclaren Actually no, none of the prime evils can do harm to the whoever carrys their soulstone. Thats why he asked for it rather than taking it.
The soul-stone Marius gives "Tyrael" is just a shard. There's actually a story in the DII manual retelling how the soulstone was shattered when they tried to bind Baal in the past, and the Archmagus of the Horadrim took it upon himself to chain Baal in himself, since he was the most spiritually powerful. So he put the shard in himself, and the rest is history.
@AnnKalanie That's true-for Baal's specifically. However, neither diablo or mephisto had their soulstones shattered, and they were roughly the same size as seen in this movie.
This Was such A Powerful Performance Marius Had An Increddible Voice Actor. I Remember Beating The Game Motivated by The Cutscenes At The End of The acts Because His Narration Was so

Wasn't it Diablo himself that was with Marius in that tomb? Both Diablo and Baal went ahead to free Mephisto.

@Reaper1722
Oops, yeah. Diablo went to Baal and freed him with Marius, then he went off to find Mephisto. Either way, Duriel is there to guard the tomb.
I think LeikaMafian thought that Duriel was the guy with the Soulstone stuck in him from the Cinematic, thought Duriel was Tal Rasha/Baal.
