Akagi was the one that took part on the Pearl Harbour plan and also involved in some invasions before it too joined three other aircraft carriers to take Midway islands.
However all four were sunk by brave pilots of the US Navy and I suspect Akagi is on the bottom of the sea nowadays.
Its a shame that one cannot find honest interior video of IJN Warships. It is a loss for history, and very sad.
~Not as sad as losing American ships of course. The IJN had to learn the hard Way about American Warriors, and that cruel lesson must taught every other decade or so to her enemies. The BoyKing Obama has ensured all of our current enemies that We are Weak, and so history repeats, and We Will have teach this lesson again soon, and you can thank our Nobel prize Winning president for it.
@Kapindur "The BoyKing Obama has ensured all of our current enemies that We are Weak, and so history repeats, and We Will have teach this lesson again soon, and you can thank our Nobel prize Winning president for it."
Exactly! It was the perception of our weakness in the minds of our enemies that set in motion the chain of events (Khobar Towers, USS Cole, African embassy bombings) that culminated in 9-11.
@bampaku I admire the Japanese culture of embracing the past, and apologizing for recognized mistakes in order to move forward as a respectable society, as I've noticed so many Japanese young and old visiting Pearl Harbor and stepping foot on the Arizona Memorial, I wonder if it is a pilgrimage to honor the sailors who died that day. To be wiling to offer your life for your country is the highest honor and feeling of pride that only a member of a countries armed forces can experience.
Japan and Germany were the most orgenaized and most diseplined armys of ww2 and still are though not as strong, 1 japaneses squad would be able to take 3 US squads alone without any air help or special weapons, 1 german squad wopuld be able to take on over 5 us squads. believe me, dont argue with me becuase this has already happened in ww2 over a gazillion times.
@Blo0pTheZombies It sounds probably lol. I mean the U.S. loves fighting wars that are one sided most of the time, look at what happaned when it was the other way around in Vietnam.
Germans were going to use technology of Akagi in their own aircraft carrier Graf Zeppelin. Amazing navies indeed. Only ones able to challenge british and american domination of the sea.
There's no cause for disrepect. It was a different mind set over 65 years ago. They've apologized, the U.S. has also committed atrocities. We should follow Japans example of recognizing our mistakes and trying to make things right.
@p8ryot don't appologize to us. I think the Chinese are still waiting, Korean Comfort women too.... your leadership also needs to appologise to your people still..a japanese survivor said of his American guards, My enemies were the first to treat me like a human being... post war cmdr Fuchidas friend related his imprisonment experience in USA,,,he had a nurse who treated them very well dispite her missionary parents having been beheaded in New Guinea...shamed them and changed them...
KGMB Honolulu! Tune in and listen to the Morning Zoo Followed by Imus in the morning with Don Imus. If KGMB would have been playing Hip Hop the Japs would have dived their planes into the sea
Thanks for posting such rare footage! It's truly appreciated by me to see rare stuff like this. I've been an amateur military historian for over 30 years and I honestly have never seen this. Walter Cronkite narration is great also. Thanks again...
IJN's major weakness was its lack of respect of reconnaissance. Carrier warfare which dominated the pacific always dictated that the side that spotted the other side first would get the decisive
first strike at the others carriers. At Midway the IJN was spotted first and the rest is history.
Midway was supposed to a surprise attack, like Pearl Harbor. Diversions in the south & north were supposed to cause the US to keep the carriers at Pearl Harbor. IJN sneaks up on Midway, 1. air strikes, 2. invasion, 3. sink the US carriers belatedly coming up from Pearl Harbor. The strike force itself would not do reconnaissance, that was to go out from French Frigate Shoals, but the USN sent some ships there to prevent that.
I have been always thouhgt that what kind of machines and weapons could japan create if it had same resources as UK or even USA. But the fact is, if Japan had those resources there had no been war. Most of resorces on planet Earth were owned by UK, USSR and USA.
And do You all know that even now in Russia children and people generally are told that in future all enemies will attack Russia because they want russias resources. ... point for thinking..
not until battle of midway. but the japs still had a reasonible navy strength after June. They still managed to destroy some of US carriers in Solomon sea
Good document film. The Nakajima B5N2 Kanko are certainly of the Airgroup AI ,the torpedo unit of LCDR Murata. The D3A1 Kanbaku are maybe in training, because had only 60 kg bombs underwings and not the usually ventral 250 kg bomb.
Most of this is sound stage work, including many of the shots of the carrier's bridge. I also spotted several shots of US equipment masqueraded as Japanese. However, there are several incredible clips that are certainly from one of the Pearl Harbor carriers.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Those Japanese caused a lot of trouble,They attacked a non hostile target,We had to kick there ass and nuke em twice before MC Arthur wrote there current constitution.
I think the interior scenes are actors--the exterior shots on the flight deck are real--unless the movie set built an entire full-size replica of the Akagi.....the footage was pulled from a 1956-vintage American documentary...so the Japanese movie must be even older than that.......not alot of large-budget movies made in Japan back in the late 40s and early 50s....
These clips were taken from a 1956-vintage documentary film....since TORA TORA TORA was filmed in 1970, it is likely they used the older footage themselves....

木村功が予科練としてチラッと出ていることに気づいたあなたは、誉められて良い
大河内伝次郎の現代物はこれに始まるのかな。ほとんど同じ出演者の「わが青春に悔いなし」の滝川教授をやるとはね。
