She was married to peter buffett for a short period of time. I don't know how that makes her qualified to write or comment on Warren Buffett and his investment strategies.
As the way of all things, what effect do you suppose its question, knowledge, understanding and application by billions of persons will have on the state of global economics, science, the humanities, education, government and business?
.
The underlying law of nature is the most important subject any person can investigate and learn about, can proceed to understand, and can then come to personally apply in life.

He sets a terrible example for the US. Living of others.
Furthermore he has invested in a time that the stock market went up and up and up. When different times come this sort of investing will not be profitable. But the first point is what it's all about.....
The whole game of investing in common stocks is, by design, not value-adding in aggregate. The same can be said about the entire finance industry.
I respectfully disagree with what you said about how his gain is somebody's loss. Investing in common stocks is not necessarily a zero-sum game. Both parties could end up with more than they started with if the economy grows.
My preconceived idea about Warren Buffet is that he's a very nice guy. The typical granddad that everybody likes.
It's just that in investing there are 90% losers, some people that earn a little, a lot that get rich by managing without risk and a few very big winners.
It's extremely dangerous to society and can lead easily to war. And in theory you are right about investing that two people can win, the company and the stock owners, but this is extremely rare, the opposite is the rule.
when you have as much money as buffet you can afford to hold stocks for as long as it takes for the stock and market to move up again....so spare me the obvious.
the real question is what were the one or two or three deals that really made him rich enough in the first place ?
30% of compounded return over a really long period of time works magic. You are basically doubling your money every 2-3 years. That's how he got rich. Slowly and steadily.
There are dozens of books on how he made his money. Just check them out.
@penciloasis once again: this ride is not a steady upwards ride. It goes up and down (the market) and it takes cash reserves to keep the money in the market in bad times and wait for it to go up.
I think he is a great role model for a lot of people in business too. Most of the things the guy said makes sense to me and is hard to argue with.
He was worth about $110,000 when he was 26 (in 1956's money) , which was obviously a lot of money but hardly enough cash reserves to break the game. We all gotta start from somewhere.
There isn't too much information on his deals when he was young. Though he said he easily averaged 50% a year earlier in his career until his capital grew too large.
Let me venture a guess anyway: Do you think it is not plausible for anyone to achieve positive returns especially in the realm of 20-50% given the fluctuations in the market?
There are quite a few people who managed to not just beat the market and managed to eke out positive returns in bear markets consistently. WEB and Peter Lynch comes to mind.
The Buffett Partnership (1956-1969) never had a down year (flourished, in fact) even though the market wasn't going anywhere during those periods.
@penciloasis USUALLY even the best investors have those one or two deals that make them the "big bucks" initially which basically helps them with rest of their deals. Those one or two deals puts them in a different league. I was just curious , as far as Buffet, what those deals happen to be. thats all.
As far as I know Buffett did it "gradually" in his early years. He was worth 25 million when he dissolved his partnership in 1969 and did it by "killing the DOW" (his words) during that period. If you do the math it works out to 52% annual compounded return but you already know that.
Repeating what Buffet did in the 50s and the 80s will not work now, and owning what he owns now will not get you rich. Now, in 2009, you have to be smart enough to have the independence he did back then to determine which investments will make you money. We're in a secular bear market... no one is going to get rich off Coca-Cola. Maybe if you find the next Coca-Cola or Sees Candies....
pn, your totally right. People think they will get rich buying coke and kraft, lol. What a bunch of idiots. Buffet rode the biggest bull market in stocks. The next big bull market will be in commodities, especially gold and silver. We have at least another 4-8 years. The way to get rich is to just use the dow/gold ratio. Own gold right now until it hits 1 or 2, then swap out your gold and buy an index fund. Repeat when the ratio is near 30 or 40 and buy gold. You dont have to be a stock picker.
Yeah, i've read this strategy before and on a back-tested basis it earned thousands of percent higher returns than holding the DOW. You know, though, this strategy doesn't appeal to people who like to have fun choosing their stocks ... It's a gamblers greed that makes speculation fun :)
I get that gamblers greed from time to time also. 6 months ago I moved all my money into silver and gold, the physical stuff. The great thing about the physical stuff is you cant wake up one morning and sell it with a click of a mouse so you end up never selling. When the ratio hits 1, im out of gold and into stocks or real esate. The trick to get out of the stock gambling trading addiction is to just deplete your account and put it into metals.
This dreadful excuse for a woman (if IT is indeed a woman) is merely trying to reap money from WB's fame and skill. What does she know ? Absolutely nothing that you cannot read in a book NOT written buy this scum bag.
Stop droning on you dreadful scrubber and get a job instead of making money off your relative.
I hate to burst your bubble mary, but sometimes stocks just arent worth owning. We will be in a bear market for another 10 years. Silver, commodities, and shorting the bond market will be the only thing that will work in the coming years. Nobody will get rich investing in proctor and gamble or Wrigleys even in a bull market. You had to buy those companies 40 years ago. A 200 billion dollar company isnt going to quadruple in our lifetime.
You 100% right about PG. PG has a price to book of 2.74 so Warren is not buying it. The stocks that Warren has bought recently were WFC with .5 price to book, nrg with .9 price to book, cop with .9 price to book, and kft with 1.5 price to book. Warren would probably buy PG if it falls from 162 billion down to 90 billion.
This lady is the biggest hack ever. Her whole book is on calculating future earnings of a company, yet buffet just came out a few months ago and said trying to calculate future earnings doesnt work. Buffet basically blasted everything this book was about. Put it this way. If it was as easy as this book states, why isnt little Ms. Mary a billionaire herself? Its because the stuff in this book is crap. Nobody is getting rich off wrigly or kraft anytime soon lady. Those companies are done.
@30percentplusreturns have you read either the intelligent investor , or security analysis by ben graham? It talks at length about calculating future earnings and estimating a present value based on its earnings potential.
one of the most important things which is not outlined is the fact that most of his million doller investmensts have been bargain, where in he has been nominated on the board and dictated how to use cash, as in how he has evaluated the investment and saw it growing!!!! this single most factor differentiates warren to any other small investor....
I don't know I just finished reading ... and the Interpretation of Financial Statements. She either of misrepresent Buffett or Buffett meant it literally when he said, "other people read Playboy, I read financial statements." To be against dividends is just crazy. Who want to tie up their money in an investment for 20 plus years without realizing some profit in the interim?!! From her I get the sense that Buffett doesn't like wealth as much as he like see the numbers on statements grow....
the truth is that Buffett has been more than just a value investor. He's made plenty of money on options and other forms of speculation. I believe it's a great form of investment, but I relegate to the same position in my portfolio as fixed incomes investments.
In other words it's not the either/or proposition in which Mary Buffet frames it.
My point then is that I believe she really misrepresents Buffett. For if Buffett really believes that companies should sacrifice dividends for slighter higher long term stock prices, then he really is a sick, sick man.
i love buffet, but i have to point out that he really stole his quote about IPOs from Mark Twain:
"October. This is one of the peculiarly dangerous months to speculate in stocks in. The others are July, January, September, April, November, May, March, June, December, August, and February."
Right now, Sept 29-08, the market is getting massacred... I tend to buy into WB's principles of investing... and am still holding all but 2 that I had a yr ago.
I sleep just fine. 17% ann comp return is awesome.. if you keep it up for 25 years
theres not 1 day u creep in2 a page checking out videos n u wont find someone cursing..lol.anyway 2 me she's pretty n she's lucky 2 b his wife cuz he's rich.that aside.he needs a wife n someone has 2 b the wife so if she's the lucky one, will u blame her?she didnt buy the guy,he chose her so haters, clowns lets talk about something better so the world can b a better place cuz any of u got the chance 2 meet her in person,u'll like her.she's a very nice person n thats y of all the women he chose her
What has Warren Buffett said about "Mary Buffett" publicly? Surely he has commented on her and the books. I looked at a list of books he has recommended and her books are not even on it.
commomn sense invest in hybrid vehicles period long term and your portfolio should look good when you retire.gasoline will be a thing of the past hundred of years from know.
That is the opposite of what warren would do. Everyone is trying to make money on the "next big thing" and he will stick to making money off of a paint company or a shoe company. By the way a lot of the companies that make the hybrid vehicles (Ford GM) will also be a thing of the past 100 years from now.
unfortunately nothing it seems :( if there existed such a formula, all would have used that and thus neutralizing any advantages that such a formula could bring
It is not a mathematical formula. Read a couple of Ben Grahm's books such as The Intelligent Investor and you will understand his investment philosophy.
She wrote couple books on warreb buffet, and i must say i was disappointed. She tried to formulize buffet's strategy. One of her quotes, "...getting a 20% annual return pretty easy". Warren said his successor should beat the market by 2% every year, and thats equates around 12% return on average, but she finds 20% "easy".
Also, in "Tao of WB", she says WB invested in Coke because anyone fools could manage it. But in fact, Warren did not invest in Coke until a competent manager came in and refocused Coke, and he paid a premium by waiting. She needs to read "WB the making of the american capitalist" before she writes anymore books and misquote Mr. Buffet.
for sure ready his letters was an education for me-- and I too find her somewhat irritating, as i see others here do too.
that said however, i did learn from reading her book (one of the-- perhaps, two). i learned the importance of going to the source, eg, i do not need to hear her tell me what the ovarian lottery is, when warren has.
but your comment on her saying that '20% return is easy' may be related to the fact the he did something like average 23% for forty years
I think this video is great, she can simply speak about Warren from a perspective no-one esle has.. mamagog is wrong, she spent a lot of time with Warren, her co-author has been firends of the famly for over 30 years I met them at a book signing in Omaha where David Clark lives. They have writtten thrre other books which are taught in business schools..get your facts straight.
She is not WB's daughter. She was married to his son a LONG time ago and rarely ever spoke to WB. She doesn't know what she's talking about - just copying a bunch of stuff that has already been written and taking credit for it. WB doesn't even know her co-author.
who are you!? where do you get your facts? they have written three bestselling books over 10 years, if they were incorrect wouldn't Warren have spoken up?
If you really knew about Warren Buffett, you would know that what I say is true. I don't have time to continue this nonsense. Have a nice day - I hope you don't waste too much more of your time reading books by people using their name (sort of!) for personal gain. If you are interested in really learning something about Warren, there are some better books out there - and the BH annual report is the best. Good luck to you....
The 'co-author' bills himself as a 'noted international lecturer' and also claimed to manage Buffett family wealth and be a Partner in an Omaha Investment Partnership. Author Clark is the "Jason Blair" of financial writing, an ambulance chasing personal injury lawyer in Omaha.
If you would like to know how Warren Buffett thinks read his annual reports. Why listen to this woman? Seems like a waste of time when you can gather the information straight from the source from which it came.
Agreed. His annual reports are full of information on his valuations. Also read the Berkshire Hathaway owner's manual, which is rich in information, too.

Why?
'Living of others'. That is what he does. His gain is somebody else's loss.
He doesn't invent, produce or add value.
But the US will get what it deserves. If you think that shoving around money builds wealth then you get what you deserve, very simple.
And yes, it has worked for a long time so it seems the right thing but it isn't.

30percentplusreturns 2 years ago

30percentplusreturns 2 years ago 6
Like Sara Lee, Wrigly owes too much in loans.

Is Mary Buffet a daughter of Warren buffet?
smile1888 3 years ago
she was his daughter in law. She was married to his son David I think. She explains this in her book "buffettology"
It is a great book by the way, and really gives insight into why Buffett is the greatest investor.
khaymen1 2 years ago
I don't know I just finished reading ... and the Interpretation of Financial Statements. She either of misrepresent Buffett or Buffett meant it literally when he said, "other people read Playboy, I read financial statements." To be against dividends is just crazy. Who want to tie up their money in an investment for 20 plus years without realizing some profit in the interim?!! From her I get the sense that Buffett doesn't like wealth as much as he like see the numbers on statements grow....
Roshibear 2 years ago
the truth is that Buffett has been more than just a value investor. He's made plenty of money on options and other forms of speculation. I believe it's a great form of investment, but I relegate to the same position in my portfolio as fixed incomes investments.
In other words it's not the either/or proposition in which Mary Buffet frames it.
Roshibear 2 years ago
My point then is that I believe she really misrepresents Buffett. For if Buffett really believes that companies should sacrifice dividends for slighter higher long term stock prices, then he really is a sick, sick man.
Roshibear 2 years ago
he's bought copper futures, he bought enough silver to make the price of silver go up 50%, he's done many different kinds of arbitrage.

i have not 'sold' him anything.
but, that he has written an offer to me is enough to know that i was 'doing my homework' well enough.
i will not disclose any details-- as it is private business of his.
warren taught me (through public, open-source material) about holding secrets, and building trust.
thanks.

commomn sense invest in hybrid vehicles period long term and your portfolio should look good when you retire.gasoline will be a thing of the past hundred of years from know.

You are one of the first people talking smartly.
even --beyond hybrid-- we are developing vehicles that run on NO FUEL!!
Thanks for the post.
warrencurrier 4 years ago
That is the opposite of what warren would do. Everyone is trying to make money on the "next big thing" and he will stick to making money off of a paint company or a shoe company. By the way a lot of the companies that make the hybrid vehicles (Ford GM) will also be a thing of the past 100 years from now.

It is not a mathematical formula. Read a couple of Ben Grahm's books such as The Intelligent Investor and you will understand his investment philosophy.

Why such a low rating?
She makes good points about buffett that I didnt know and I am half way through a good book about him.
I like how she says "People drive a RR to Wall street to take advice from someone who takes the subway, if they know so much why are they not rich".
This is a very good point and is true!! BUT if she is so smart why is she writing a book and attending these things to make money??
h4eafy 4 years ago
Yes but she misses the fact that many who do take the subway are rich, that's exactly why they take the subway.
almac4 4 years ago
She wrote couple books on warreb buffet, and i must say i was disappointed. She tried to formulize buffet's strategy. One of her quotes, "...getting a 20% annual return pretty easy". Warren said his successor should beat the market by 2% every year, and thats equates around 12% return on average, but she finds 20% "easy".
junjunforever 4 years ago
Also, in "Tao of WB", she says WB invested in Coke because anyone fools could manage it. But in fact, Warren did not invest in Coke until a competent manager came in and refocused Coke, and he paid a premium by waiting. She needs to read "WB the making of the american capitalist" before she writes anymore books and misquote Mr. Buffet.
junjunforever 4 years ago
'junjunforever'
for sure ready his letters was an education for me-- and I too find her somewhat irritating, as i see others here do too.
that said however, i did learn from reading her book (one of the-- perhaps, two). i learned the importance of going to the source, eg, i do not need to hear her tell me what the ovarian lottery is, when warren has.
but your comment on her saying that '20% return is easy' may be related to the fact the he did something like average 23% for forty years

She is not WB's daughter. She was married to his son a LONG time ago and rarely ever spoke to WB. She doesn't know what she's talking about - just copying a bunch of stuff that has already been written and taking credit for it. WB doesn't even know her co-author.

Good luck to you....
mamagog 4 years ago 2
The 'co-author' bills himself as a 'noted international lecturer' and also claimed to manage Buffett family wealth and be a Partner in an Omaha Investment Partnership. Author Clark is the "Jason Blair" of financial writing, an ambulance chasing personal injury lawyer in Omaha.

Agreed. His annual reports are full of information on his valuations. Also read the Berkshire Hathaway owner's manual, which is rich in information, too.
