Was never much of a fan 'till I heard this song. Actually stumbled upon it while looking for Ray Charles' version. What Johnny does with it moved me deeply. It is so real. Almost ordinary sounding and yet it touches you so close to heart. This song always makes me cry when ever I hear Glen sings it. But Johnny brings a "down to earthiness" that relates in a whole 'nother way. Absolutely love this version. Thanks for posting it.
people keep saying he's not captured this song in the same way as his others, to me that's the point. It's dry, bitter and has an element of pain to it, one that ignites passion within his voice. I like the fact that it's so rough in places, it highlights how the song writer feels. It's cash, he doesn't need to capture a song. you're all missing the point
@sufc94 Indeed. It's Cash and he's not trying to prove anything because he doesn't need to. Is it my favorite version? No, but it's powerful and real in a way that today's music sadly misses. His voiced changed a lot as the years rolled along--every stage had a lot to say and a lot beneath the surface. You either get it, or you don't. Great comment.
i found the way mr Cash has sang it makes me rember being a son and now a dad, now whats that all about, is it the whiskey, the denial of tomorrow i dont know happy daze loved it yeah, took me back to ford cortinas and jimmy savile, sunday roasts!
What I like most about Johnny's version is the key and the arrangement. Glen Campbell's version was played in a major key; Johnny's version is in a minor key, and though there are a lot of subtle parts in the song, the arrangement sounds so sparse...you almost feel like you're the lineman...this is absolutely my favorite version of this song!
To the critics - Johnny has never sung "pretty", not his style, like Dylan or Waits he brings, character, intelligence and feeling, that being said I don't think version works well, mainly I think because of the orchestral background, I wish he had done it more acoustically, I don't think the two mesh well. It's still interesting, anything he does has depth that few other vocalists can match.
@zettadom Please if you wish, do take a look at Cassandra Wilson's version of this exquisite song. In my opinion it is AMAZING! I agree with you partially, Johnny didn't do a good job on this one anything he did had depth indeed, but his voice was nor remarkable. Take care.
@zettadom I think the orchestral background works well because it doesn't sound authentic. The cello does, but the background synthy strings don't. And I think it suits it really well.
@furnakit flying a flag upside means you're in distress, if you look at all americans flags on government buildings they are all upside down at the moment
Incredible lyrics: a perfect expression of the depth behind the thoughts of someone who might be percieved as simple you-get-what-you-see. I find this deeply moving no matter how many times I listen.
Love Mr.Cash and I appreciate this cover for what it's worth, but this song will always be Glen Campbell's for me. It sounds too weird without his voice.
Love Cash and the song. Don't get me wrong, Campbell did it damn well. But here we have a powerful version in a lower key. Maybe I'm a little biased, because I can sing it in this key:) --
I love Johnny Cash so much it's silly but I don't care for this cover at all. It just doesn't suit his voice. Glen Campbell killed this song so hard, I don't think anyone can top his version of it.
@RevAIDGnarl You know, I don't like this cover either, but I'm not sure it's Cash's voice that I don't like. I think the producer screwed this up with the arangement. It just isn't a "big" enough sound or something. I really don't know what it is, it's just not as strong of a sound that Cash's voice needs behind him. I love Johnny Cash, and I love this Jimmy Webb song so maybe I should just hush and listen to the music...
I like Glens alot....But this has so much soul. John had such a Wise sounding voice when towards the end. with that voice and the instruments in the background.....you have an epic piece of music.
@Raachen I just heard it. Eh. Johnny's is way more soulful a version. Glen's is perhaps cleaner but too clean. You can hear more emotion in Johnny's voice than Glen's imo.
James Taylor is 10000000000 times better. So is Campbell
