  • James Taylor is 10000000000 times better. So is Campbell

  • God invented Johnny Cash so men wouldn't be ashamed to cry

  • cash is king

  • Was never much of a fan 'till I heard this song. Actually stumbled upon it while looking for Ray Charles' version. What Johnny does with it moved me deeply. It is so real. Almost ordinary sounding and yet it touches you so close to heart. This song always makes me cry when ever I hear Glen sings it. But Johnny brings a "down to earthiness" that relates in a whole 'nother way. Absolutely love this version. Thanks for posting it.

  • this is just an amazing cover..

  • And just when you think you heard the best songs Johnny Cash, you find this one. Legend!

  • people keep saying he's not captured this song in the same way as his others, to me that's the point. It's dry, bitter and has an element of pain to it, one that ignites passion within his voice. I like the fact that it's so rough in places, it highlights how the song writer feels. It's cash, he doesn't need to capture a song. you're all missing the point

  • @sufc94 Indeed. It's Cash and he's not trying to prove anything because he doesn't need to. Is it my favorite version? No, but it's powerful and real in a way that today's music sadly misses. His voiced changed a lot as the years rolled along--every stage had a lot to say and a lot beneath the surface. You either get it, or you don't. Great comment.

  • this is just excellent, what a voice Johnny had .

  • i found the way mr Cash has sang it makes me rember being a son and now a dad, now whats that all about, is it the whiskey, the denial of tomorrow i dont know happy daze loved it yeah, took me back to ford cortinas and jimmy savile, sunday roasts!

  • What I like most about Johnny's version is the key and the arrangement. Glen Campbell's version was played in a major key; Johnny's version is in a minor key, and though there are a lot of subtle parts in the song, the arrangement sounds so sparse...you almost feel like you're the lineman...this is absolutely my favorite version of this song!

  • Cassandra Wilson's version sucks.

  • @triumphkirsten - I wouldn't say it sucks, but...wow - not impressed.

  • Excellent. Really like his 'later' voice in the latter years

  • To the critics - Johnny has never sung "pretty", not his style, like Dylan or Waits he brings, character, intelligence and feeling, that being said I don't think version works well, mainly I think because of the orchestral background, I wish he had done it more acoustically, I don't think the two mesh well. It's still interesting, anything he does has depth that few other vocalists can match.

  • @zettadom Please if you wish, do take a look at Cassandra Wilson's version of this exquisite song. In my opinion it is AMAZING! I agree with you partially, Johnny didn't do a good job on this one anything he did had depth indeed, but his voice was nor remarkable. Take care.

  • @zettadom I think the orchestral background works well because it doesn't sound authentic. The cello does, but the background synthy strings don't. And I think it suits it really well.

  • One of the best songs ever. Johnny has done covers that he has OWNED (like "Hurt"), but this isn't one of them.

  • @furnakit flying a flag upside means you're in distress, if you look at all americans flags on government buildings they are all upside down at the moment

  • Incredible lyrics: a perfect expression of the depth behind the thoughts of someone who might be percieved as simple you-get-what-you-see. I find this deeply moving no matter how many times I listen.

  • Love Mr.Cash and I appreciate this cover for what it's worth, but this song will always be Glen Campbell's for me. It sounds too weird without his voice.

  • I would not call that singing.

  • Legendary

  • simply .... GREAT!!! Good old Johnny never failed!

  • WOW

  • shit

  • @cullyvan A woodpole linesman, as in what the song is about....

  • This song has a bit of rustic charm to it:)

  • Love , Love , Love .

  • JOHNNY ................THE REAL DEAL

  • are u retarded? which part of "shut your mouth" didn`t you understand???

    just leave....

  • One of the great American songs and as usual Cash makes that shit his own.

  • I love Glen doing this but Johnny is well amazing ...nuff said

  • Cash's voice is mohaganny. I swear you can feel every bad day of his life when he sings. An American Icon. Truly.

  • Thank you Johnny Cash...

  • love this song.....

i can hear you thru the line......

and i need you more than want you

    and i want you

    all the time.....

  • awesome version, not to take away from Glen, but a tribute!

  • I'm a linesman in Ireland, heard this for the first time today an LOVIN it!

  • Does the Wichita Lineman play for the University of Kansas?

  • johnny cash nailed this song, great for lineman everywhere

  • how beautiful a song

  • I don't believe there is 1 song on that entire set that is bad. This is one of the definite stand outs,

  • One of my favorite songs by my favorite singer. Excellent!

  • A great singer singing a great song:).

  • Love Cash and the song. Don't get me wrong, Campbell did it damn well. But here we have a powerful version in a lower key. Maybe I'm a little biased, because I can sing it in this key:) --

  • When he sings "And I need you more than want you. And I want you for all time" you can hear the ache for June in his voice. Chokes me up every time.

  • I love Johnny Cash so much it's silly but I don't care for this cover at all. It just doesn't suit his voice. Glen Campbell killed this song so hard, I don't think anyone can top his version of it.

  • @RevAIDGnarl You know, I don't like this cover either, but I'm not sure it's Cash's voice that I don't like. I think the producer screwed this up with the arangement. It just isn't a "big" enough sound or something. I really don't know what it is, it's just not as strong of a sound that Cash's voice needs behind him. I love Johnny Cash, and I love this Jimmy Webb song so maybe I should just hush and listen to the music...

  • @coleyman1 just shut your mouth and if you are not able to do so, just leave

  • @lirumlarum777 What are you talking about?? Did you really read what I said, or are you just kidding me??

  • I loved Campbell's original but Cash owns it here.

Me n' the old man shared a whiskey to this one.

  • is there anything cash cant do

  • @Moc870 He always did it. Everytime, what a great version of this beautiful song. A heart warming interpretation.

  • @waterhead001

    unearthed is so good!

  • @Moc870 I love Johnny Cash, I'm a guitar player and I love playing his stuff. I may add Unearthed to my collection. Take care brother.

  • Johnny was so deep and real in his heart and his emotions and thats why so many people love him and his music..He is with our Father now

  • Cash always brought innovation and respect to his cover songs, often times achieving the same or even greater impact of the originals.

  • I like Glens alot....But this has so much soul. John had such a Wise sounding voice when towards the end. with that voice and the instruments in the background.....you have an epic piece of music.

  • wonderful ..just wonderful ..

  • i hear you singing thru the wires.......

  • oh wonderful.... what a blessing it was to music, Johnny's voice, heart and soul...

  • wonderfully simple & moving performance by Cash. I miss him alot.

  • i miss Johnny Cash..what a great human being and singer he was :(

  • I like Glen Campbell's version much better than this.

  • @Raachen I just heard it. Eh. Johnny's is way more soulful a version. Glen's is perhaps cleaner but too clean. You can hear more emotion in Johnny's voice than Glen's imo.

  • greatest piece of music - ever...

  • I love the music in this!!! and cash only makes it better.

  • Mr. Cash, I believe you.

  • One of the best versions of this song out there.

  • legend !

  • when did johnny record this

  • thank you for your post..a powerful lyrical message from the man in black.

    thanks for sharing.

  • Fucking AWESOME, Johnny Cash automatically makes every song he sings his own. This tune brings a tear to my eye. RIP JC, you're sorely missed mate.

  • beauty

  • Superbe chanson interprétée par une légende !!!

  • Whoa! Remarkable!
