what coused the accident? In my opinion it was what we norwegieans call an impulse roll. That is highly dangerous if you do it low level, and dont have experience. When a rookie pilot has entered nearly inverted position, he get the fealing of getting sucked into the groung and pannics. Often pulling on the elevator(split s), because thats the most normal thing to do when nose are pitching down. ofcourse, when inverted that results in nose down instead of the oposite.

No, its most likely a speed error. Each manuever has an entry speed. A low level pitch up barrol roll will have an entry speed. Its unlikely he had this speed right after take off. This would normally be performed after a low pass at high speed. As a result he appears to have lost energy at the apex.

I can't, but of the aerobatic planes I've flown, none could achieve the required airspeed for this manuever after take off. After take off the aircraft requires some time to build speed. It appears he may have simply run out of energy (i.e. speed) at the top. I low pass over the runway would provide more than enough speed since you pick up a lot of speed in the descent.

In a jet your initial acceleration is very slow but by the time you reach take off speed your acceleration is much faster than a prop plane. It would depend on the plane but I"m sure an F-16 would have no problem attaining the speed required for the roll during its initial climb.

Most jets today are actually turbo-fans, which means that they are part jett but they also get a lot of thrust from the fan blades in front (like a propeller). That gives them better low speed acceleration.

Prop planes are much better for aerobatics because you can do so much more.

Every manuever has a minimum entry speed to ensure there is enough energy to complete the manuever. Often times you have to dive a bit to gain it (although technically all manuevers start straight and level). However, entering a manuever from an initial climb out is very difficult because it would be hard to gain proper speed. For instance, most of what I've flown has a roll entry speed of 120 knots. Climb out is 90.

In prop planes the smoke is something that is injected into the exhaust of the aircraft. The exhaust heats the stuff up and makes the trail that you see. Basic white smoke is generally just injected oil but you can buy all different colors.

Airshow flying is always about safety-you fly the showline limits and think about the wind and positioning of the maneuvers on every set up. Always plan for the unexpected and unthinkable. Never overfly your personal minimums, evaluate them yourself and reset them periodically. Have another performer critique your act and help set your limits, until you are at the level of a top performer. Even top civilian performers, the Blues and T-Birds make mistakes. Leave room for those mistakes.

But, levelhead, you are right that this guy did not have the good sense to not attempt a takeoff roll at his age and in a Pitts S!C. No need for that much risk. My low level airshow instructor's first words to me before we started training low level stuff were that the crowd can kill you-meaning people get caught up by the crowd and push their limits too far. Personally, I never noticed the crowd past taxi out., and the only time you think about the crowd is keep safe positioning from the crowd.

Actually Level Head, if you look at the vid the old man is wearing a International Aerobatic Club jumpsuit-he is probably a contest flyer at lower catagory like sportsman or intermediate-this looks like a legal local air show under a waiver. He has to hold an aces card to fly a zero altitude maneuver like that. Looks like he just screwed up-started off nicely-got the nose way up but hesitated and flattened out a bit-hence he barreled the roll and caught the ground by about two feet too low-lol
