Nothing but great memories listening to Lee Andrews--couldn't get enough of his misuc at the Philly dances in the 50's/60's. Hy Litt, Geater, Joe Niagra and more allways have them at the weekend dances. Lee is still my favorite singer and hsi music will live forever.
Man, his voice is so smooth. I remember meeting him one day at a flea market. Odlly enough I met his exwife two days before, and his son ?love a few days after. It was such a coincidence. I didn't know too much of his music, but I jhad sense enough to know that I was meeting a legend. Love his voice. It is like hot chocolate, just smooth!
@PJDooWop He once owned a Boutique Shop ath 52nd & Cedar Phila. (West side of 52nd Street) I don't know if the sign is still there which state's "Lee Andrew's Boutique." What a nice man. And, to think some day we all will be able to listen to Lee sing forever.
DooWop, The Geator with the Heater's been off for a lot of years. Harvey Holiday is still on 98.1, WOGL Oldies FM. Thing is, they don't play the real oldies like they did back in our day like they did on the AM stations. Guess those listening nowadays don't have the knowledge to call in and request the 'Good Oldies' that we used to listen to mainly because they're not familiar with them. I wait for the PBS DooWop shows every 3 months. That's where they are!
The Geator's on WVLT (aka Cruisin 92.1) every weekday afternoon. I'm not sure if you get it in Philly though. I was working in the Philly outskirts of NJ this summer and it came in there, but barely.
My husband was an original member of Rick & the Masters and they were in the studio when lee was recording and his group didn't get thre on time so rick& masters did the backup for him i have an original signed record from lee himself ,check out the guys doing let it please be you you'll love it
Thanks so much for the info! As you probably saw in the description, I suspected that this could have been Rick and The Masters but wasn't sure. You have confirmed that for me.
Let It Please Be You is a killer! The other side of that one is great as well. My favorite is probably Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered. My copy of that on Haral is really clean but the first half of the song hisses badly because the previous owner played it with a bad needle.
What a great song---don't get any better then this. Bring's back memories of my days in the Army while riding in a convoy from Ft. Chaffee, Arkansas to Ft Hood, Texas. Doo-Wop, the greatest sounding music to one's ear.
I remember this Lee Andrews song very well from the Philly record hops as well as Summertime On The Pier with Ed Hurst. It is a great one. Thanks forthe post.
You're welcome. It amazes me how this song was very popular in Philly (rightfully so - it's a GREAT song) but it didn't really take off in other parts of the country.
PJDooWop, because people in Philly got taste and an ear for GOOD music. Forgot all about this one. Heard it lately on a DooWop show. Brought back many memories.
I agree with you elly. Some of my favorite records are things I heard on Philly stations. I live in the NYC suburbs, but I used to be able to get Geator and Harvey Holiday when they were on AM in the 90s. I live too far to pick them up on FM
This is another one that makes me feel like I'm standing on Broad Street, looking up at City Hall, and the statue of William Penn. City of Philadelphia.
Old timers told me that Gamble and Huff's 309 Studio, at 309 S Broad, was the recording studio of Cameo Parkway records. Maybe this was cut there. It's now the home of Phila International Records. The Sound of Philadelphia gets in your blood.
customkey -- I know that Cameo/Parkway had their offices at 230 South Broad, northwest corner of Broad and Locust. Same with Swan. Catty-corner from Gamble and Huff. Maybe the recording studio was in a different building from the rest of the operation. I live right across the street from that building -- the Locust Theater also used to be in there. You're right about Philly music -- if you grew up with Blavat and Georgie and Hyski and Bill Wright Sr., it never gets out of your system.
speedy45rpm, thanks for that info. I used to hear the old time musicians talking about recording for Cameo Parkway at 309 when I worked there cutting tracks for Gamble and Huff back in the '70's. But I didn't know that Cameo Parkway was at 230 South Broad. Good to know! But you're right, maybe they were cutting at 230 South Broad. The memory does play tricks over the years. I'll ask Sam Reed next time I see him.
He was with them for a pretty long time. I don't think he's with The Hearts on this track. This was about the time The Hearts went out on their own and recorded On My Honor.
PJ, I have heard The Masters (minus Rick) and The Dreamlovers as possible backing groups here. But, it could very well be the Neons. Another superb post.
THIS MUSIC IS REJUVENATING PJ!! THNX ALOT!!!

Yes, It's Rick & The Masters on this recording. I have a cd of their music and on it featured r&r tracks by other artists who recorded they sang on.

Yo PJ, I see the record does not credit the name, but I remember hearing that Hy Lit was the writer of this song.
