  • Paprika was in face inspiration for Inception. Christopher Nolan said it himself.

  • Inception lacked one very crucial thing in its world= batshit craziness, which is what dreams are. Nolan spent too much time creating a very complex story to tie up all loose ends for continuity sake that he forgot that dreams in their very nature are incoherent. Paprika had no rules, characters never questioned the physics and rules of a of a dream so they seemed to think everything was normal even in the most ludicrous situations. Only after they awake do they realise how unusual their dream

  • There are tonnes of copying conspiracies about Inception and Paprika, and even though they have the same basis and even extremely similar scenes, I think it's safe to say it's probably just a coincidence and they're both great films in their own right.

    This was cool, btw.

  • das hast du wircklich geil gemacht!

  • The only time I wasn't disappointed, with an anime's usual inane structure, was with the first season of Gunslinger Girl, and then that headed back to shit in the second season when they lost funding...and brains.

  • One thing I like better about Paprika is that the setting of the dreams just change (it is what happened in my dreams, at less) and don't have to have some machines to change the setting even when they're already inside the dream because dreams are more or less supposed to be random. it is here that the whole Inception movie become unrealistic, and failed.

  • DiCaprio looks weird.....

  • What pisses me off its that Nolan doesn't accepts he was influenced by Satoshi Kon, and Arronofsky denies that Black Swan was influenced by Perfect Blue its beyond ridiculous. And just when Kon passed away, Arronofsky was like "aah yes he was a role model". Don't get me wrong I like these directors but I hate when the credit its not given.

  • @Lomito actually Nolan makes it pretty clear that Paprika was a major influence for Inception

  • @DreVercetti According to some dude that attended to a Q&A with Nolan and del Toro, Nolan was questioned if he has seen Paprika and he said no.

  • @Lomito Nolan said Ellen's character was based on Paprika

  • @shewholives217

The man who wrote the book it's based off of said he never would have imagined a animated Paprika movie.

  • They didnt copy anything it was just an influence Nolan saw Paprika and probably thought it was a cool idea and branched off of it.

  • @yazid3848 Actually, he told me he didn't see it. But he seemed more interested in checking it out when I told him that Kon mentioned TDK before he died.

  • @yazid3848 yes but i've read that both Nolan and aronofsky (black swan comp. to perfect blue) were reluctant to talk about their main inspirations coming from Japan, as Disney did with the lion king. They should admit good ideas can come from others :)

  • @GhibliOriginals Actually, Nolan told me upfront that he wasn't inspired by Paprika, but was aware of it.

  • @GhibliOriginals Arenofsky bought the rights to remake Perfect Blue in order to use a scene from it in "Requiem for a Dream", so for better or for worse that means he doesn't have to talk about how Kon influences his ideas. Personally I have not been able to watch Black Swan because my vomiting when I see Natalie Portman would upset people around me. But to get back to my point he's not doing anything as edgy as stealing ideas. He just bought them.

  • Hurr, Dicaprio and his fabulous mustache

  • inception copied paprika??

  • Goddamm, my friend watched this when he was sooo high and he tripped balls!

  • ... it works

  • wow if nolan actually made inception go hand in hand with what the paprika film had minus that happy parade, inception could of been a classic not that it is a classic. good video here.

  • Both movies have lots of similarities and differences but one similarity that prevails is (MAJOR SPOILER) they play a tacit game with the viewer, who is never sure if is watching the reality or some surprise dream-in-dream; and again and both movies take and leave open this game to the very end

  • Am I the only who found that the Inception story line was overstaed and not evn any where close to a 'mind-fuck'?

I had trouble following it and found the experience underwelming.

  • Goes together perfectly

  • Both movies were great. Maybe Inception could've used a parade or two, but I really enjoyed both.

I don't see much similarity between the two, other than both being about dreams. Inception was about planting ideas in the subconscious, while Paprika was more about analyzing the subconscious and trying to prevent it from leaking into reality.

  • Hey folks let's not forget another movie that has elements of anime known as Cameron's Avatar which also paid homage to Miyazaki/Ghibli productions since Cameron is a fan and wrote it in 1993 as when he filmed it in 2006 till 2009 he did some homages to Nausicaa, Princess Mononoke, Castle in The Sky and My Neighbor Totoro. Even Pan's Labyrinth and Kill Bill were anime inspired.

  • Same subject, two totally different movies.

You may only enjoy Paprika if you enjoy watching anime.

Both very good movies, in their own right.

    ----

    You cannot compare those two.

  • Talked to Chris tonite, he said he hadn't seen it, but that he might now after I mentioned that Kon talked about TDK before he died.

  • FINALLY someone connects the dots! Bravo!

  • Fuck ! Its been done ! you beat me to it !

    Still

    nice job

  • This just shows how ahead the Japanese are

  • They're already making this. It's call caprica. It's on Hulu.

  • Well hollywood filmmakers like Nolan, James Cameron, Zack Snyder, Guillermo Del Toro, The Wachowskis, Michael Bay, Steven Spielberg, Roland Emmerich, Jonathan Mostow and more are huge fans of anime and use anime for inspirations. For example Avatar has the feel of Nausicaa/Princess Mononoke while The Matrix has the feel of Ghost in The Shell/Akira, The Island has that GITS feel and now Inception Paprika.

  • @Johnlindsey289 Never heard Snyder cite anime influences, though that arrow scene in 300 reminded me of the one from VHD: Bloodlust.

  • @Zerudah

Well that was a direct reference to VHD Bloodlust as Snyder loves anime you know as do the other directors i mentioned. Do you think The Matrix and Ghost in The Shell are the same film?

  • stupid cancer

  • I loved both movies. The funny part is that "Paprika" made more sense, and seemed even more realistic then Inception! LOL

  • @zonkiethegreat Actually I thought it was the other way around. :D (I'll rewatch Paprika , though, to make sure.)

  • Goodbye Satoshi kon

  • There's a resemblance indeed

    great trailer!

  • I know nothing about this anime or movie or whatever, I just checked this out because it was related to my Inception mashup trailer, but hot damn! This worked out really well! Perfect footage for the trailer, in my opinion.

  • An idea mr Satoshi, ideas... live forever

  • rip satoshi, you will be there forever

  • I liked Paprika the character and the owner.

both movies are totally different. I was disappointed by the 'twist' in Paprika. I liked Inception a little more.

  • RIP Satoshi Kon!!! i haven't seen Paprika yet cause I'm waiting for some reason, but I would've never guessed that inception would have some uncamnny similarities. I'm mostly shocked by the similarities with some of the best effects I loved about inception and from this trailer, but I shall respect both movies because I like Inception and I love Satoshi Kon. ...........Dang that was a beast trailer!!! XD

  • Brilliantly done. I don't like Inception but I do like this!

  • I think Paprika does a much better job at trying to capture the experience of dreams than Inception did

  • @psychopomp88 Though I loved Inception I do agree. The dreamscapes were way more rigid in Inception than dreams are. However I love both movies and cannot wait to get Inception when it comes out on DVD

  • RIP

  • R.I.P. Satoshi Kon...you wil be missed

  • Goodbye Satoshi, you gave us some damn good anime.

  • I love Paprika, Millenium Actress, and Paranoia Agent... I'll miss you so much Satoshi Kon... R.I.P.

  • R.I.P. Satoshi Kon

  • I love both films.

  • Inception ripped off Satoshi Kon's ideas. Good God, Christopher Nolan- was the dark knight THAT difficult to top? --Damn Loser!

    RIP SATOSHI.....

  • I love Satoshi Kon and I loved Paprika (along with all his other animated works) but I think it would be misguided to think that Christopher Nolan ripped off Paprika, or that he was even greatly influenced by it. Nolan worked on the script for Inception for 9-10 years, prior to year 2001. Paprika came into theaters in 2006. Do the math.

(Btw, great trailer, I got shivers down my spine, and R.I.P. Satoshi Kon)

  • @yeeroy He actually said in a French interview that he was influenced by Paprika; specifically by the character Paprika/Atsuko.

But inspiration and ripping off aren't the same. There are similar elements and scenes, but very different films as a whole; just with a "dream" theme. I mean, Aronofsky went so far as to buy the rights to Perfect Blue for a complete frame for frame scene in Requiem for a Dream and they're drastically different.

  • @oceanicca Yeah, but Black Swan is totally the same as PB.

  • @yeeroy Yeah, I also think both movies explore the same subjects, and well there's a chance that Nolan took some influence from Kon's work -remember the last episode of 'Paranoia Agent'-, but still there's not any plagiarism involved. Besides, how they displayed either are rather different, 'Paprika' is a 'pop' and surreal dream, whereas 'Inception' owns a deal to German Expresionism. Nolan will continue making marvelous films, but it's very sad not having Kon around anymore

  • RIP SATOSHI KON, ONE OF THE BEST DIRECTORS OF ALL TIME!

  • R.I.P. Satoshi Kon.

  • I watched both films. The similarities I felt were the hallway, the mirror, and not being able to see the faces. I'm sure Nolan saw this anime and was inspired. However, it's definitely not a rip off like people suggest. I am nor an anime otaku or Nolan fanboy. With absolutely no bias, I have to say Inception is levels way above Paprika. I watched Paprika first and the film is ridiculous. The animation is definitely great, but the story was so dreadful. Inception was very entertaining.

  • @boamuro Man, what are you talking about? 'Paprika'... "ridiculous"? Sorry dude, but I must say you just didn't get the point. It's one of the finest animated films made during the last like ten years -way better than any made in America, save a couple by Pixar. By the way it's not necesary to be an 'otaku' to watch it.

  • both inception and paprika own you 'spergin neckbeards

  • @streetballerv310 "'spergin neckbeards"?? WTF does that even mean? Nothing offensive I hope.

  • Paprika is a million times better than the easy cop out that was Inception. Plus, the score was nowhere near as irritating.

  • Paprika is what Inception would have been like if the cost for cgi and all that weren't as high. It's much more difficult to do special effects in movies than in anime.

  • Paprika just seems I don't know....More dreamlike?

I mean inception was a pretty decent movie, but the "dreams" were just too litteral and dull, while the dreams in paprika are colorful, flowing, imaginative, and well dreamlike.

  • @XxFruitsxBasketxX As in, Paprika beats Inception like a redheaded step child.

  • @GreyMatter00Duh I like that expression..lol I plan on using that in the near future..lol

  • @XxFruitsxBasketxX 8O That's my opinion exactly. When I saw the movie, I was thinking, "This is great, but dreams don't make sense. They aren't realistic like this movie." That's what I loved about Paprika was that it didn't make sense, just like a real dream. Also, Paprika came before Inception, which goes to show how creative Japanese people are.

  • @fanime1: I think the same thing too.

'Inception' is not a film about dreams, is 'Matrix' with a different incipit ....

  • @Nisselak I never noticed the Matrix comparison, but again, you're right! ^-^

  • @XxFruitsxBasketxX Inception was the "realistic" version of paprika, we have it on file that Nolan took imajor inspiration from Paprika

  • the novel that paprika's based on, was written over 18 years ago, make of that what you will ...

  • I read in a source (search Paprika Inception on Yahoo, links come up), where Christopher Nolan cites Paprika as an influence?

  • I immediately thought of Paprika while I watched Inception for the first time.

  • Is that John Candy at 1:00?

  • Is that John Candy at 1:00?

  • I think the problem is the timing. The anime already exists, and the choice to make a live action film out of it seems suspicious. Not to say that paprika isn't original... I mean there was probably 'inception' in paprika, I don't know. But was there that twist ending? Not the whole reality is or isn't a dream thing, but Cobb's revelation?

  • I've seen Paprika twice and Inception once and there are similarities but also differences.

  • way to go buddy...awesome

  • This was first movie i thought of when i watched Inception, although I like Paprika more, Inception was still pretty decent

  • Yeah, except for one thing. Nolan has been working on that script for a decade. Do more research people.

  • @yitzhakarafat And the book preceded the script.

  • @yitzhakarafat WORKING ON.

  • I've seen both movies, the only similarities is that they both are about dreaming. Paprika is just a mind fuck of a movie, Inception isn't. Completely different plot.

Though I guess: spoilers: cobbs wife and that falling guy might be similar.

  • Both movies are part of the surrealistic movement. it was never a new concept.

  • The REAL problem here is that there is too much focus on having completely "Original Ideas", where the focus should be on the execution of ideas, old or new. People tend to freak out and overreact when one movie has ANY similar quality or plot point to another movie. But there is a line where outright copying an original idea is taken too far, where it becomes completely irreputable. I honestly don't believe "Inception" comes anywhere near that line.

So can't we just enjoy both?

  • Technically both Paprika and Inception are very similar but very different in certain aspects.

  • Its not the similarities that bug me, but that the American audience will have never seen or will see Satoshi Kon brilliant visions in Paprika. Inception is #1 in the box office right now, and when the Paprika live action movie comes out it will just be bashed for its similarities to Inception. Anime is insanely brilliant and forward thinking and a majority of America is just not on the same intellectual playing field as Japan, not yet. Inception is a start, keep the faith for america ^-^

  • @trollslayer42 I kind of feel like you're devaluing American cinema. Yes, American film and Japanese film are on two totally different dimensions of artistry and creative thinking, but I've never had the feeling that American cinema is less "intellectual" than Japanese cinema. There are plenty of American films that don't pander to the Lowest Common Denominator. I suppose they're just harder to recognize in the midst of all the "LOLweneedmoarmonee" films.

  • @ColdClamChowder "but I've never had the feeling that American cinema is less "intellectual" than Japanese cinema."

    Dances with Smurfs, anyone?

  • @Zerudah Um...I'm not sure what that means.

  • @ColdClamChowder I'm alluding to Avatar.

  • @Zerudah screw Avatar!

  • @juliusyeung0330

Do you think The Matrix should have been called Ghost in The Keanu Reeves?

  • @Zerudah

If you think Avatar is the same as Mononoke and Dances with Wolves then do you think The Matrix is the same as Ghost in The Shell?

  • @ColdClamChowder Japanese movies all suck nowdays... What happened to such classics like RAN and RINGU or Seven Samurais? or AKira?

Hollywood can still redeem itself from Chris Nolan

  • @juliusyeung0330

money. Its cheaper to make animes than hire a team production, writers, actors.

  • @trollslayer42 Godfather > Korean Films> Akira Kuruska? (directed Ran)>Christopher Nolan>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Over a thousand GREAT animes in Japn

  • @trollslayer42

Acutually According to Nolan one of his inspirations was Paprika.

  • @trollslayer42 weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaabooooooooooooooooooooooooo

  • @trollslayer42 I'm bugged by the upcoming arrogance of Film fans who don't know Paprika but think very highly of Inception.

Some of them will surely watch Paprika out of pure interests but so many of them stay fan boyish saying Paprika is a piece of shit movie without ever watching it.

Well i wouldn't care if 2 out of 10 people would think so but It's 9/10 who are completely arrogant and ignorant.

It hurts me since Paprika is such a beautiful movie and Inception a great homage.

  • @Ryodakun the truth of the matter is most people are mediocre, its 1/10 who are on the path that really matter. stay on the path!

  • @DjDedan Well it doesn't matters now anymore.

    May Kon be remembered well.

  • @Ryodakun agreed! he was and still is on the path! RIP Kon and your memory will never fade.

  • @trollslayer42: Ignorant people are lazy people who don't want to do research before complaining about something.

  • @trollslayer42 You're damn right. It was even worse with the Matrix / Ghost in the Shell inspiration. But as long as animated films are associated with the Pixar and Dreamworks factories that keep spilling out the same movie over and over, it will be difficult to create this intellectual field you mention. Ah well, screw them dumbasses, at least we know to look beyond the horizon of the LA hills ^^

  • @trollslayer42 Inception is not the first nor only intelligent film America has produced, only the most recent box office hit one. Hollywood is a fat stupid bitch that keeps popping out these dumb ugly flicks, but there are talented writers lurking about and gems will continue to pop out now and then in the future, just as they have in the past. I mean its like looking at all the bad generic action/mystery-based animes of japan and saying "WOW JAPAN SURE CANT MAKE ANIME". You trollin'? Maybe.

  • @trollslayer42 They are going to make a Paprika live action??? WHAT?? I guess since they ran out of comic book heroes, now Hollywood is switching to anime. The problem is that it would require MILLIONS upon MILLIONS to replicate most animes into live-action films.

It's just the baby boomers that don't get anime. Most people now in their teens through late 30's get it, and understand it.

  • @trollslayer42 I have to disagree with you. Sorry but I liked Inception better even though Paprika came first Inception did it better. Besides despite there similarities they are still really different movies. Paprika is more creative I'll admit that but Inception is more entertaining and its more how should I say it suspensful. Both have a dream aspect to it but Inception is more of a heist movie and Paprika is more of a creative movie(idk how else to describe it).

  • @trollslayer42 Personally though I don't think Paprika would work as well live action.

  • @trollslayer42

I saw Paprika long before I saw Inception and I don't even think the two films have much in common. Yes, they both deal with dream technology - but that's about it.

For the record I'd give Paprika an 8/10 and Inception a 10/10

  • @trollslayer42 well, that was terribly ethnocentric and in turn, I'd say the Japanese are still light years away from the rest the world because of their often incoherent storytelling, recycled ideas and character archetypes, inane/verbose dialogue, and a huge tendency of "telling" a story rather than "showing" one. The main thing for me would be that last point, because over exposition is rampant in anime, very often ruining the entire story and/or characters.

  • @gregtestagent Well that is untrue, have you ever seen Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood? It did a perfect job on "showing a story". Also, It can surpass the majority of American film very easily.

  • @trollslayer42

Kon is is a cult filmmaker you know and he makes cult movies. Japan is smarter than Americans despite i am a smart American. Movies like The Matrix is heavily influenced by many things including Ninja Scroll, Akira, Fist of the North Star and Ghost in The Shell, Atlantis The Lost Empire influenced by Castle in The Sky and Avatar by Cameron by many movies including Ghibli's works like Castle in The Sky, Nausicaa, Mononoke and Pom Poko as Cameron is a Ghibli fan

  • @Johnlindsey289 Avatar is also based heavily off of Dances with Wolves.

  • @Kharandis

Actually more like Man Called Horse, the real Dances with Wolves from 1970 and has Richard Harris and has the same plot and scenes from MCH at times besides Ghibli stuff. Would you also compare Dark Knight to Heat?

  • they actually take 8 scenes from the animation and use it in inception, JUST IN THE TRAILER! im not fucking kidding either, they use the mirro paprika breaks, they use the town eroding, the town exxploding like in the pariad and they use him running and falling in the hall way, a long with those there are a few other minor scenes, and remember that was only in the comercial! its sad, its really sad,

  • @Misheru46 I've seen Inception and thought it was AMAZING but I've never seen Paprika. But I think that those might Coincidences since Christopher Nolan mentions he was inspired by The Matrix and Dark City he never mentioned Paprika. I doubt Christopher Nolan even watches anime.

Although the idea of going inside dreams may be the same I think that the two movies look totally different(judging from the trailer).

  • parika owns

  • Dude epic trailer! The movie and Paprika go perfectly together! Awesome job!

  • dude I must say when I saw the thumbnail Ithought "My god that is brilliant why didn't put those two together." then I watched it and realized that I wouldn't have pulled it as good as you did. this is getting a "Like" and being saved to my "Kick ass" playlist. Cause Paprika was almost as tripp as Pink Floyd's "The Wall" and close to being as much of a mind fuck as "Neon Genesis Evangelion" and the movie Inception looks to to be a mind fuck movie

  • It's nothing like Inception.

  • @leemcqueen500 Watch "Paprika", you may feel differently.

  • @Boldsoliloquy I have and it's nothing like it.

  • @leemcqueen500 then tell nolan not to get inspired by it, dipshit.

'The French film site Excessif reports that Nolan has acknowledged the influence of Satoshi Kon's anime adaptation of Yasutaka Tsutsui's Paprika novel, although does not quote him directly:

"Christopher Nolan cites [Paprika] as one of the principal influences and was inspired by its main character to flesh out his character played by Ellen Page, a 'spirit architect' named Ariadne." '

    fuck you

  • @spyletu well put my dude...well put!

  • @leemcqueen500

It really is an amazing movie. Both are awesome movies about Lucid Dreaming.

  • @leemcqueen500 Inception is actually a good movie, this is crappiola

  • @Hackmoune My guess is that you haven't seen Paprika, or you just didn't understand it. After all, Inception is somewhat of a simplified and less in depth movie than this.

  • @drxwnedxwxrld your guess is wrong, i have seen a lot of anime, im not an otaku boy only cause i dont like to read mangas but as for animes i really really know a lot, and this movie is one of those shits that made me fall asleep, it doesnt make any sense at all, i loved Perfect Blue and enjoyed Paranoia Agent as well but i was really disappointed by this

  • @Hackmoune

What do you think of Akira, Ghost in The Shell, Ghibli, Grave of the Fireflies, Ninja Scroll, Golgo 13, Wicked City, Fist of the North Star etc.?

  • @Johnlindsey289 Akira: good at first half the second half is kinda weak, Ghost In The Shell: the series and the two movies are masterpieces.

    Grave of the Fireflies: Genius

Ninja Scroll: Movie is badass TV series are crappy

Golgo13: I liked but nothing special

    Wicked City: Pretty dam good

Fist of the north Star: Liked it cause i love proto cyberpunk stuff

Studio Ghibli´s movies: loved Grave of the Fireflies and Princess Mononoke, dont liked sen to chihiro the plot didnt keep me interested.

  • @Hackmoune

Seen Ghibli's stuff, Akira, Ghost in The Shell, Ninja Scroll, Perfect Blue etc.?

  • This is the SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOW, I mean...WOW man you just motivated me to finish my Inception vid Idea...Oh and that part where she says "I love movies!"...freaky!

  • XD

I thought this was real for a second...
